ZX50 CDI
« on: September 09, 2010, 09:12:48 AM »
G'day All,
I recently ordered a cdi and it turned up today.... but, the wiring is different.
Mine has two plugs and the new unit has only one with 5 wires. My original unit has 6 wires between the two plugs, but the light green one can be discounted because it is for the rev limiter.
I am wondering if anyone can help with how to connect it up. The wire descriptions are below.
Stock CDI

main plug
green
black/yellow
blue/yellow

Second plug
black/white
black/red

New CDI
red
yellow
black
green
blue

Found out that the cdi is actually for a Honda Dio, which has the exact same wiring diagram as the ZX50. As the wire colours on the cdi are different I was wondering if anyone out there has a Dio and could possibly take a pic of the connector so I can see the location of the wire colours. If anyone could help with this it would be much appreciated.

Hey Sid, what's been up?  I'm afraid I'm not certain on how to attach the wires.  But I am definitely interested in your results!  I think I may need a new cdi for mine.

G'Day Shaka, long time no hear. I bought it from ebay seller scooter wolf pack. He says it won't work, but I say it must, they have the same wiring system. If I can get a look at a dio loom plug showing the wire colour positions, I can work out the rest. I am wondering if the wire colours on the cdi would be representative of the trace colours of the stock one. Trying that is a last resort, might blow something up.oops.:)

I was thinking it may coincide with the tracer color as well.  Don't want to fry anything though.  You might try asking over at scooterinvasion.net  There are quite a few guys with Dio's over there.

Yeah, I bit the bullet and signed up at scooterinvasion, I have asked the question, just wait and see what happens. I just took a couple of photos to put up. How is your scoot going? And, what about your Sea Doo? My scoot is going ok but is still holding out on me. When I put in the 6 gram Dr. Pulley sliders, I lost about 10 kph on the top end, I have just recently put my 7 gram rollers back in and regained that :) I am currently runnuing a 1,000 torque spring and a couple of days ago put in some 2,000 fly springs, and is now trying to take off in a weak spot, so will try rejetting. Apart from that I haven't been doing a lot of work on it lately, just riding mostly, too many other thing to catch up with.

After comunicating with the seller, it turns out that he was unable to help me, other than telling me who the manufacturer was. It was made by Ruima, a Taiwanese parts manufacturer. Looking at their web site it looks like they are a performance crowd. I have sent them an email, though I don't expect much joy. Here's to hoping.

I have received a diagram of the pin locations. Unfortunately I won't be able to try it for a couple of days. Will post results.

Thanks art, I see that is a 4 pin unit, mine is 5. The one the fella sent seems to be right with the exception of one pin in the wrong location, on the cdi, the top centre pin is absent, where on the digram he sent the bottom one is absent.

It may not matter the port may be linked for optional ground or something.

That particular one is to the ignition coil. I will give it a try some time ovep the weekend and report what happens. If it works, then we will know we have another option to the stock one.

Thanks Rianna. I hope it works too, or I could be up for a regulator, and anything else that it might take with it.
