Title: Belt life
Post by: Greg H on March 18, 2015, 09:04:15 AM
I have a 2008 500i with 23300km (14600 miles) on it. It still has the original belt. Is it necessary to change the belt because of it's age or to keep riding. Performance from the bike is fine.

Any suggestions.

I don't have the service manual for the 500 so this is just a guess from my side, but that mileage is very close to change time.
The life of the belt depends on many factors, including riding style etc.
On the DT300 the manual says replace belt every 20.000km which translates into ~ 12,427 miles.
Hope this helps, others might give you more info on this.

on the 300i DT.  belt life is 20,000 km.  after that you are apt. to be left on the road with out a belt,

Go to Grandvista / Page 4/ Shredded Belt....It's actually an Xciting 250,  posted under Grandvista by accident...

I genereally change mine around 14k miles. I do notice some differeence in performance. When I check the log, mileage has been around that mark, from a low of 13,200 miles to a high of 15,122 miles. Always with the OEM belt.

Got north of 22k miles on my original belt.  Will check it this year before riding.  I believe SissyMary has an original belt with over 30k miles.  Hopefully he will chime in.  Good luck with the belt.

Yep, over 30,000 on original belt. But I only tour. In city stop and go will wear out belt faster! :-*

You guys must be feeling lucky! On my 250 the belt is significantly smaller (weaker) than the chunky X500 belt, but even with a new belt I carry a spare and my impact under my seat when on a long trip. Last thing I want is to be stranded because a broken belt when it takes 5 minutes beside the road to swap.

I had a belt disintegrate on a highway all that was left was some dust and a few threads, however it also took out the outer pulley splines when it went.  So it was down for 4 or 5 days.  till the parts showed up this was an opportunity to add Dr. Pulley sliders.  no real difference I just wanted them. Oh this was a People 250 S.

After what miles kilometres did this happen?

I've noticed the belts start to make funky noise well before their service limit is reached, sometimes a kinda of "squeel" or rubber noise that I HATE!!! I almost always replace the belt at least .5mm before the service limit.
