After nearly three years of wearing motorcycle protective gear I want (need) a change. I hate the power ranger look. I hate even more that I look pretty winnie decked out for riding a highperformance sports bike just to ride a scooter. Does anyone make decent protective gear for the scooter rider that doesn't look like I'm riding a sport bike?
-
Some riding jeans (http://store.americangusset.com/http%3A-storeamericangussetcom-jeans-mens-defender-motorcycle-jean-blue/dp/2070) offer abrasion protection, but are deficient in impact protection (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=26401822#post26401822).
-
Bon armor will give you impact protection, it fits under jeans,
-
Just squid it! Or layers. 8)

Some interesting alternatives. Thanks for the suggestions.

Corazzo makes some pretty decent stuff if you've got the dough for it. I bought a Sedici Hi-Viz mesh jacket, and even with the liner removed, I can't stand having the jacket on when it's over 80 degrees outside. 99% of the folks I see riding scooters around here don't wear ANY protective gear, but since I commute everyday, I want some form of protection. I'm going to start looking for a hot weather jacket, or else just risk not wearing one at all. :o

I went from the power ranger look .to a plain black leather. that way I can wear the jacket anywhere .And ride anything.

I've been wearing a hi viz First Gear mesh tex jacket - in the summer without the liner it is like wearing a bit of patio screen - totally windy and as cool and protected as you can get together!
Like going in a T-shirt? NO, but .....safer.

I doesn't bother me to look like a rider......because I am:

Trout,
Here's what I'm wearing now....pretty well vented.

But here is what I wanted to wear...!! Just pretend you're part of the Japanese Everest summit attempt. I love this thing ....sadly not in my size.

Trout, "We ride plastic scooters in public. We have no shame...we are thick skinned dowels in a square holed world."
OK, if that's not working for you.... "We are Europeans visiting our relatives, the ones with good teeth...and we need familiar transport."
Hey, I was riding my two-toned, pastel blue, chromed, crazy-long Italian mirrored plastic scooter home from work today in the rain - and a Harley Guy gave me the Biker's Wave thing...
BaddaBing!
Ha!
So, we ARE accepted by the 2-wheeled world....really we are. Who cares what the neighbors think. If we really cared we wouldn't go out to get the sunday paper dressed like that.
It's OK, we all have moments when we're on our scooters and we suddenly realize we don't live in Madrid.
Hang in there.....Be t o u g h.
(I'm practicing that Biker Wave thing sitting on a kitchen chair in front of my wife's full length mirror. It always catches me by surprise and I give 'em that Disneyland Wave back, embarrassingly)

"We ride plastic scooters in public".
Stig.
That is so true!!! There is no shame after you come to that realization. It's all academic at this point.

I don't give a rat's arse end what other people think of what I wear. I just hate the power ranger look for riding on a scooter. To me it's like wearing a tuxedo to a rodeo. Sportsbike apparel looks great and fits the sportsbike venue, but it sure doesn't fit the image of one who rides a scooter in my opinion. Because of this I want a change.

Walked into work the other day with my hi viz jacket on, carrying my helmet & the security guard asked why I had all that gear if I was just riding a scooter? The stupidity of some people, I didn't even bother responding to his question. It's that type of idiot that causes accidents in the first place.

My response is there are too many idiots out there talking on cellphones and texting and you need to be seen and protected as possible. Most likely that person that questioned you is one of those smartphone cagers.

I was stoked when riding the parkway here in asheville when not just one, but close to every bike that was going the other way gave me "the wave". And it's been happening out in town recently, now that the weather has been nice and the motorcycles are coming out of hibernation. My girlfriend laughs at my excitement from the wave. I know I'm lame. I accept it.
-
I get about 50% of the riders I pass that throw "the wave" out to me, personally i'd rather keep my hands on the handlebar especially in Austin traffic, LOL :o

I've definitely missed replying to several for safety concerns.

It's all psychological. When I used to get geared up (just jeans and Joe Rocket Jacket with good gloves and full face helmet), I used to feel self conscious. I'm on a scooter and I wasn't used to that. I'm a bigger guy, too, at 230lbs. So I imagine I do look humorous on a scooter; but who gives a shat, really?
First part, and the most important, is that you're protected. Everything else is secondary. If your issue is comfort, there HAS to be someone out there making some gear (even motorcycle specific gear) that takes into account rider comfort without letting them feel like a transformer - all stiff with limited movement.
Like others have said, it may mean just going with a leather jacket. Maybe by a jacket, remove the liner and the CE armor. As far as pants, Just wear jeans imo. Most accidents are impact-related, and don't result in slides. I'd be more concerned about my upper body instead of my legs, honestly.
My local scooter shop offers some cool stuff. They even have some cool denim jackets (can't believe I just said that!) with removable padding. It's a pretty low profile jacket and even with the padding in you can barely tell.
If you go another route or find something, let me know. I'm definitely interested. At this point I need to buy all new gear. Hi-Viz is #1 priority. idc if I look like a light bulb coming down the road. And a padded jacket and full face are next. However, I'm always interested in more comfort beecuase most of the jackets I've owned haven't really been comfortable at all.

From gogogearla.com, I have the ventilated cafe jacket in black with silver reflective piping.
I also have the black kevlar hoodie and the black kevlar leggings.
All are AWESOME. I really like the new leggings but have only worn them once so far.
In cooler to cold weather I wear my packable down jacket under the cafe jacket and I am warm enough and still very comfortable.
I also bought my husband the hoodie. It's his favorite jacket other than his leather one.

if anyone every go down they are going to wish they look like a power ranger...if you scoot can do fifty you want the same protection as a motocycle with higher speeds

On my 30 mile (each way) commute the posted (but apparently understood as suggested) speed limit is 50 mph for most of the trip. Often, I have to hop on a limited access highway that has a 65 mph speed limit, but heaven help anyone who reins in his or her ride to keep her that slow. Throw in the fact that the first time I ever tried to ride a two-wheeled motor vehicle (October 2014) I ended my ride with a broken rib... You know, I have no problem looking like a PowerRanger, even on days that hit 92 F. (At 94 F, I did opt for something with a working a/c.) Modular helmet with integrated sun visor, TourMaster AirIntake III jacket, Scorpion gloves (or deer hide on alternate days if the sweat hasn't dried), Evo knee/shin guards, and Vulcan mid-calf boots. (Actually, the knee/shin guards go on only when hitting 65 mph is part of the plan.)

(Couldn't resist tossing in these photos knowing how much Stig admires the lines of a Grandvista 250.)

I normally wear a Bilt mesh jacket with Bilt black kevlar reinforced cargo jeans. The jeans throw off the power ranger feel a little bit.
I also have the Bohn Cool Armor to wear under regular jeans or any other pants. They seem like they would be good in a crash. I don't wear them when it is hot, unless I plan on riding the mountain twisties. They are like pantyhose with armor pads.
-
I draw the line at panty hose, no way in hell I'm wearing those. My junk needs to feel free, my ancestors fought and died for that right and I'm not about to give it up.

Although a "price point" house brand I can say Bilt gear does its job. I hit the hard after a at speed T-bone and came away no worse for wear. Bilt jacket, pants and hat. Thumbs up replaced with the same except for the hat.
The Bohn stuff has left me luke-warm (downright steaming in the Florida summer)
Even with overpaint/jacket I question if it's up to a fall. I hope I never find out.
