Title: ..lost power..
Post by: wordslinger on June 16, 2010, 10:43:17 PM
..okay, let's try this again...wouldn't post on my last attempt...

..i've lost a lot of power..new plug, scoot doesn't smoke, haven't lost oil and valves are at spec....engine sounds like it's under a heavy load after initial take-off and will not build rpms...the engine sound from the carb's intake sounds like the slider won't open completely, even at top speed, which is just over 40 mph downhill..feels like it's being held back downhill and on the flats....uphill the engine bogs down and drops to around 25 mph...tried my oem carb with the same results...tried my oem torque driver with the same results..tried lighter rollers and the engine revs higher, but still no power...tried two different length belts with same results..

..turning the drive face by hand feels like normal compression...haven't checked compression with a gauge, but i would think if compression was the issue, i should feel a difference when turning the drive face...when i set my valve clearance sunday, it was still a bit difficult to turn to tdc....felt like it always has...

..final drive??..just changed the gear oil about a month ago, checked the level today...it's ok...but there is definately a louder noise from the final drive area as i spin the rear tire by hand...it's louder after a ride than when cold, but turns as free as ever, i think...the gearbox doesn't get too hot to touch even after a 15 mile ride...but the noise is there...

...any thoughts my brothers??

Lets start off simple. Have you tried both front, and rear brakes for something sticking?  Is the torsion controler opening?

..checked both for restriction..everything turns freely..right after a ride...

..checked the torsion control right after a long ride and it was tight against the belt, and i was able to squeeze it by hand...

Could you open the controller all the way?

..yes...it seemed normal..and i'm talking about the oem, which i have installed in the ncy clutch assy now...

If you spin the clutch bell back, and forth by hand can you feel anything like a bad bearing? Same for the rear tire! There is one bearing that gets around 20'000 rpm's in the transmission. You may or may not feel the bearing but it would let the gears ride hard against each other. if we can't figure it easily you might want to open the trans.

..i just put lighter rollers in, which worked GREAT for about a mile...then rpms dropped off, as well as torque...

..seems like when things get hotter, performance suffers...

..i seem to have quite a bit more free play in the rear tire, as well as the clutch bell...

if we can't figure it easily you might want to open the trans.

..that was where im thinking the problem is....

..i do have greater than normal free-play there...

I'll bet that's where it is. You will need to order a trany gasket before opening it up tho.

...20,000 rpms...wow...

The smallest intermediate gear works like hell.

Have you checked the carb diaphram?

Have you checked the carb diaphram?

..yeah, and i've tried two different carbs..i'm wondering about the vacuum though..

..i've checked all of the tubing..and all seems well...

..it's running much better tonight..it's very strange...

..i'm not convinced, now, that i have a final drive problem...

..that would not get any better over time...

If your loosing speed the power must be going somewhere, ie. producing heat.

...yup...seems much hotter...so what's generating the heat??

Perhaps a gasket leak around the intake?

..well, i haven't checked that...i will 2moro..

..any more ideas??

I always find that if you spray some easy start around the intake, if its leaking the revs will pick up..

^WD40 works too!

..makes sense...i have a can of starting fluid..

..this came on in a 2 week period...kinda really quick, in the scheme of things...

..yeah, yu know a bit about this subject don't you shub??

yeah wd40 works because the propellant is very flamable. But starting fluid (easy start) is way more powerful.

..the thing is, it ran much better this evening...almost like it's clearing up...

..i was encouraged, if not kinda baffled as to where the problem really lies...

At This point I am as stumped as you. Try instead of flammable stuff SOAPY WATER. I'd rather stall the engine than burn the scoot

..true.....starting fluid makes for an aweful sound in the engine...

..like it's falling apart...

...could it be nothing more than carbon build-up??

..i've done some stupid things with my exhaust...

I was only suggesting to spray some starting fluid around the intake to find a leak if there is one.
