I don't see why not if the bulb base and wattage are the same. Do the factory bulbs have a chrome cap to force light to bounce off the reflector light housing before heading forwards?
I wonder if it's a stylistic thing or if it affects the light pattern enough to make a difference. I imagine regular amber bulbs are much cheaper.

Have read that the flasher lamps tech is called dichroic interference coating. Allows for look to be chrome, but emites amber colored light.
BAUS15 is available in amber version Sylvania #7507, Philips #12496 on the web for under $4 each.
The Diochrioc (chromed) version is Sylvania 7507LDA
under $8 each.
Have read here that people are using LED, but lost the links.

Those "chrome" bulbs in the DT300I are actually duds and the lights are wired as DRL. The Europeans and other nations have headlight switches to turn off the high current drain for starting. These chrome bulbs are for looks only. You want them to light you need only to replace with single filament bulbs or LED. You want them to work as turn signals you gotta rewire!

What does DRL mean?
