Hi! I had an Agility 50 for a year, and upgraded to the new Xciting 400i.
Already dumped 200 miles on it in the first day, it’s absolutely incredibly.
However I really need a huge top case with backrest and a touring windshield.
Any help finding these things?
-
Most popular choice for both are Givi (somewhere Kappa) around the globe.
Those 2 brands should be available locally wherever you live.
Givi's V47 looks sick on the XC400 (and on the AK550), but I'd go balls to the wall and just get
the biggest one that exists, the Maxia.
-
Puig makes a sharp looking V-Tech windscreen for the XC400 also.
The Givi looks good and sets a good standard for top cases. But I'd like to add for consideration the Shad SH58X which is nice looking, adjustable(46/52/58L), and unfortunately a bit expensive.
-
does the universal plate from shad fit the XC400i if not, what rack mount do I need, cause I can't find a kymco specific one
-
Wow... I have an '18 X400i, and I've never really given any thought to adding a Top Case, so I can't be of any assistance here. I can tell you that if you add a windscreen, be sure that it doesn't tip the mirrors. Mine did, and I had to add extenders, because I wasn't at all confident in my ability to trim down the sides of the windscreen. I have enough space under the seat for whatever I usually carry (my briefcase for work) and that's all I ever put in it, save for the occasional odd bit from the grocery store.
I don't think there is a mount plate available yet for the X400i, because it's so new in North America. You might try Taiwanese or Asian Kymco groups on social media for help.
-
I ordered the shad 58x and the givi windshield!
Absolutely love the scooter, i got 750 miles on it already

If things go my way, I should have my XC400 this coming week.
Looking forward to your input on the Shad Alexis as this is what I'm planning.
Christmas in July, I'm hoping 8)

I should get it sometime this week, I’ll let you know!
I’m also taking the 400i on a road trip to Baltimore next week, so here’s hoping!

Could I ask for some feed back from you 400i owners?
How is your mpg on the 2018 model? (city/country roads/hwy)
Anything you found +/- that you didn't expect or very varied from published specs?
Anyone do over 200 mile trip yet and have opinions on it for touring?
Vibration change that may be surprising under any situation/condition?
Has anyone tested with a pillion?
Update/changes for comfort?
Accessories? (anxiously waiting for that Shad topcase report and pics).
Compared to any other scoot you've ridden? (I'm a Silver Wing owner and will keep it as her sister).
After several weeks of searching, I found a dealer that isn't advertising, but has one sitting on the showroom floor. I got to find time to get there and at least sit on it.
Driving my spouse crazy with my antsy anticipation.

honestly I seem to get about 150-200 miles per tank.
I take a 150+ mile ride nearly everyday, and it's FANTASTIC! and I do ride with a passenger as well, they're very comfortable too.
and compared to my Agility 50 4t, it's night and day, I loved riding it, but the speed and comfort were very lacking.
Now I can go for hours and just, enjoy the entire experience.

Alrighty, Got my new girlfriend (as my wife calls my bikes).
Smooth for a small maxi. Too much vibration just before closing the throttle or right after opening it, but everything else smooth with the engine.
A bit tall in the saddle, but I realize that is for the extra height in the storage. I wonder if it is the reason for the good lean angle too?
80 miles to first fuel bar drop. Rode 108 miles and she dropped down two bars. Guessing the last three drop a bit faster.
Like the sound. Has a backfire passing 30 mph on deceleration.
I really love the lay out of the dash. So easy to read and focus.
Disappointed in the 1.25 amp accessory socket. Should have been at least 5 amp. Time to add another one on the dash/console.
Anyone with electrical knowledge know if it would be safe to just up the fuse that small amount?
I love the mirrors wide view, but as with almost all scooters, they are too close in. Problem is the wiring for the turn signals when moving or extending them.
She looks right at home in the garage with the Swing!!!!!.
Didn't get home until 21:30.
Took the freeway home, but exited every other ramp to do the varied speed thing without aggravating fellow motorist.
Took a few surface roads on my every 3rd exit.
They had the Burger 400 and I gave her a few looks and sat on her several times before finally deciding. The only thing I could justify for spending the extra $2k was the storage.
Anywho, thanks for the feedback.
I got a copy of the shop manual section 14 with all the torque specs. I asked for a copy of the shop manual for changing belts and tires. The mechanic printed off section 14 and said this is all you will need for doing that part yourself.
So late, I didn't even get pics yet :-[

Thanks for your report.
Enjoy!
What was your out the door price?
Have read that Burgman 400 owners have been more than a little interested in this new Kymco. In the States, we don't have much to choose from in 400's...

Great report! Thanks!
-
OTD was $7102.
I had a lower offer from another dealer but Kymco didn't ship it on the order.
Got tired of waiting and paid the piper.
-
Only a bit more than mine! 6650$, and that was in very small town

Few more things.
They team that wrote the owners manual either didn't know what they were doing or got confused between models.
I'm mentally picturing 2 Thai guys in suit/tie sitting in a corner of their office laughing their butts off because their boss doesn't know English and they pulled one off.
Manual says to push the MODE button to cycle between ODO, Trips A/B, and oil change interval.
After trying multiple combinations, I found that pressing and holding the ADJ button to get the next item.
Pressing MODE/ADJ together will zero the trip.
If on the ODO display, pressing and holding the MODE will change mph/kph.
On the ODO display, pressing/holding MODE/ADJ gets to the set clock.
So far, I've not found the air temp and avg mpg display.
That page of the manual is going to be covered with notes as a reminder for me later, or for the next owner.
Back to the mirrors. Saw that someone else put the extensions on them but the rubber caps were all catty wampus after that.
After a hour of tinkering, I found that repositioning the whole mirror more forward(rotating toward the fairing), then adjusting the actual mirror made it more usable.
Both mirrors are the wide view (Objects may be closer than they appear) type and have the warning on them
Now that I've got them adjusted, they are still too close, BUT they are more pleasing and usable rather than a view of just my chest and the road edge.
I love the center stand. I've had Elite to Burgman scooters and never had one so easy to put on the center stand.
The rear tire does come off the ground, but when you place it on the stand, you'll do a double take the first time to make sure.
Ok, exaggeration just a bit, but I did take it off and do it again immediately because I wasn't sure it was so easy.
Easy storage solution #1. A got a fanny pack and sat it between the handle bars, wrapped the strap up, behind and then around to the outside of the bars then under (side facing me) and back to the other side. The fanny pack sits right in the middle. Easy to take off and strap to me. I used this previously on my B650E.
#2. Ok, don't know yet, but the wood is burning.
Most of you know, but just in case there is one that wants to know, the bars are 7/8" if you want to buy new grips. I already replaced mine with the Pro Grip 714.
Well, for now that's what is on it. I got a shelf full of grips and always changing them depending on if riding local, long distance, or expecting to hit twisties more.
Funny how different grips can make a big difference in the feel/feed back from the scoot/bike.
If anyone wants the torque specs, let me know and I'll get you the info. Pretty sure I can't post a copy from the shop manual here due to copyright restrictions.
I found the display strange when I first sat on the Xciting. After 30+ minutes, I found the positioning of the information oddly better than the Swing.
I just glance and the info kinda jumps out without trying to focus on it. FYI: I'm an old fart wearing bifocals and the only two things that are easy for me to focus on are big mountains and bikini's.
I live on a tar/gravel road. It is one mile before I reach smooth tarmac. This little scooter is much smoother than all except the Burger on this road. Even my big V4 Honda gave me jarring feedback through the handlebars. No, not smooth like a Goldwing, but still better than one(me?) would expect from a 400cc scoot.
One odd thing about the underseat storage. When I place my helmet under the seat, there is enough room, BUT it tends to slide out of place where the seat will hit it
prior to my closing the seat.
I have to hold it in place or have something else to hold it in place or it will move toward the front and be in a shallow place where the seat doesn't close.
The seat latch is nice. One hook on each side of the seat. It closes and stays nice and snug. On most others, there is one hood and the seat can tend to wobble a bit if it doesn't seat well when closed. More miles will see if it loosens up or stays put. As of now, I prefer it to the Honda version.
The seat can be opened while running by pushing down on the key, then turning left. I finally don't have to stop the engine or use a separate key.
The manual says the LED under the seat stays on, but mine goes off after about a minute. Surprised me the first time. Didn't have a watch to check the time, but that is plenty of time and don't have to worry about it wearing the battery down like the Swing.
There is a small button on the left of the key switch to press after removing the key that will activate a spring loaded cover. It works great, but to me it appears a bit flimsy. I don't know how to describe it. It works well, so it may just be me, but due to this feeling I'll be using it sparingly. I do have the five year extended warranty so I guess could play with it a little extra to see if my fears are founded...... :o
Due to the extra seat height, riding with my feet on the flat portion of the boards doesn't feel like my knees are too high. I only have a 28" inseam and can't flat foot when stopped, but while riding it is very comfortable.
Later...

Your handling and ride will improve dramatically when you replace the OEM Maxxis tires. Maxxis Much Miserable!

The dash. Yep, a very personal preference. I like it. You can look at the speed and easily see the tach at the same time.
As I said, it's personal. Some don't even like the tach.
The Mode/Adj buttons don't work like the manual says, but you can figure them out.
I've developed a high mistrust of the OM. But, I'm keeping it and using it as much as possible.
If something goes awry from following the manual, then it is on them.

Sorry, I forget if you've already mentioned....
But why the Kymco if you have a SilverWing?
Stig
-
They are different of course. The Swing is great for touring, camping, shopping, two up, pulling a trailer, etc.....
The Kymco is great for local running to see mom daily, running errands, trips not requiring the camping gear, running to neighbors, etc.
And yes I understand one locgically can do the other just the same as I can haul bags of concrete in my sedan instead of my work truck or my work truck can carry the family out fine dining.
However, more importantly, SWMBO said I can have both so I got 'em without asking any additional questions. 8)
YMMV

But why the Kymco if you have a SilverWing?
Not married? :o

Wouldn't that be 2 Taiwanese guys instead of 2 guys from Thailand? ;)
Kymco doesn't have the owners manual online yet for the Xciting 400i but sounds exactly like my MyRoad 700i. Here's the info from ,you owners manual.
(1) Mile/Kilometer, Keep pressing MODE button for two seconds will shift the unit of speed (km or mile)
(2) Tripmeter/Odometer, Keep pressing ADJ button for 2 seconds will shift function to ODO or TRIPA/TRIPB
(3) Oil Service Reset, Keep pressing MODE and ADJ buttons for 2 seconds at the same time to reset oil service
(4) Trip Reset, Keep pressing MODE and ADJ buttons for two seconds in the same time will reset the trip meter.
(5) Time adjustment, Keep pressing and ADJ buttons at the same time to adjust clock. Then the hour display will start flashing, press button ADJ to adjust hour. Then press button MODE, the minute display will start flashing, press button ADJ to adjust minute. Press the and ADJ at the same time to end the time adjustment.

Thanks for the correction. That was one of the few mistakes I've made and knew the difference(Usually when corrected, I have the deer with the headlight in the eye look) ::). Don't know why I said Thai, but I'll leave it since you corrected it.
Yes!!!! That is correct in how I got it to work. But not what the manual says. The OM even show a completely different styled dash. So, there is no Avg MPG to display I'm guessing?????? (Along with no air temp either per the manual).
Hey, maybe the problem is 2 Thailand guys writing for the Taiwan company hahahahahaha

Hey guys, I got a good question, I want to switch the blinkers to the euroblinkers. Any idea how?

I'd contact a guy on eBay (androidextend) and see if he can get them. He was able to get me the ones for my MyRoad 700i (his listing photo show's them on my bike).

Thanks Alexis and Clampett,
Some really good information on a bike I have been considering.
If I could ask, how does the weight size feel, it's a fairly heavy scoot and I do the majority of my driving in dense urban nyc, lots of stop and go, low speed lane splitting and such.
Also, how is the suspension? The roads around here are terrible and my Like 200i often beats the heck out of me, even when I try my hardest to avoid all the mounds, hole and street steel.

Tighten the rear suspension, one or two depending. Fixes all my problems; our roads get pretty terrible in NNY.
The bike’s weight is amazing, and it’s low to the ground, so easy to balance too. However if you start to drop it, it gets really hard to keep from going. But that only happens if you let it lean very far at a stop

+1 on what Alexis said.
For me it is super light and nimble, BUT I'm down sizing from a CTX1300 and a Silver Wing scooter which are both heavier.
It's the best scooter on rough roads except maybe the B650. Well, of the 8 I've owned.
I have the shocks on the middle setting. The first road I must drive to leave my house is 1 mile long tar and gravel which is even rough in a nice car.
Something like an Altima will be damaged on initial ride on our lovely county unmaintained road.
For an example comparison of my road, you can view the first 3 minutes of my video with my little Fujifilm handheld:

I have learned something today.
Somehow you can get a box from motostorm in ITALY, before Shad will even ship your top case.
Been calling for the past two weeks, letting them know that I did need it by the 24th, even offering to pay extra for shipping if needed.
But it hasn’t even been PROCESSED.
I know they make one of the best cases, but they need to work on that end of their product.

Great News! I got the Givi Windshield!
It’s really great (it doesn’t mount QUITE right, the plastic bars that go over the sport windshield don’t really belong, but it works.)
It definitely gets rid of the bobble head effect.
However, it makes you into a bullet, i was hitting speeds that felt like HALF what they were, so you’ll need to get used to it.
The mirrors are an issue, much like everyone says, but that’s exactly why i’m going to get the euro indicators, so I can change out to different mirrors!
The ride was quite terrifying though, we finally are getting hit by the huge storm system (upper NY) and it quite literally through me across my lane, the lane next to me, and nearly off the road. Hurray for ABS, it had its first real test, and in heavy rain!

I canceled my order from SHAD, they said they had everything, and then when I called in last they said they didn’t have the mount, so I canceled.
Maybe another time, but for now, this is going to be my only trip for probably a year. I’d rather have 630$ for the trip.
I understand they make one of the best cases on the market, but they REALLY need to work on their shipping and customer service.

I was posting on another forum of mixed bikes about some of the 400i details
I've owned 33 bikes/scooters. This is #8 on the scooter part of the list.
I've NEVER had a ride so easy to put onto the center stand.
While holding ONLY the left handlebar, I can press down on the stand while giving just a slight tug on the bar and she goes right up.
Maybe other Kymcos are this easy too, but I was pleasantly shocked and repeated it 2 more times just to make sure.

So just finished the first part of my vacation, the roadtrip!
Through the rain nearly constantly.
The Givi windshield does not flex even at 80mph and heavy wind and rain. I do NOT know what people were talking about.
FroggToggs are the greatest invention ever.
I love this scooter so incredibly much.

$630 for a top case! Typical prices, and absolutely crazy for a plastic box. and a mount plate.
In my town - $630 would get you a decent banger for work commutes!

Heya, Jon! Welcome!
I just got my 400I back in April, and let me tell you, coming from a Honda PCX, it was like going from a go-kart to Formula 1! The very first thought I had was "Damn, this thing is huge!" compared to my Honda. I won't share my second thought. :o The only thing that I've ever noticed with regard to the weight is when I park at work. My workplace has a rule that motorcycles must be backed into parking spaces. My space is on a very slight hill, (there's a little less than 2" in height from the pavement at the curb to the pavement at the end of the white line of the space) Not quite enough for a ball to start rolling on it's own, but enough to feel the bike wanting to roll away from the curb when backed in. I have to get off the seat by inching forward, before I can pull the bike backwards into the parking space. I didn't have to do that with the Honda. I could walk her back.
The ride is a totally different animal too. The Honda was quick, nimble, and I felt like I could just zip and zoom if I needed to, except on the 50MPH road I travel on my commute. To the drivers on that road, the posted speed is a minimum, not a maximum speed. The Honda could barely keep up. With the 400i, I can not only keep up, but pass if I need to. Even going uphill. While it is quick, it isn't as quick as the Honda. Same with the maneuverability. I don't try to zip and zoom anyway, but the 400i isn't a weave-in-and-out bike (Not that the Honda was either, and I didn't drive it that way) so if I have to make a quick lane change, I can. I would imagine there's a lot more to the 400i that I just haven't tried to push to find.
I don't worry about being on the road anymore, as I know I've got more power and size, and are more visible and have enough oomph to keep up.

Wow, you've got far more courage than I do. I absolutely do not ride in the rain, under any circumstances. If there's even a 30% chance of rain, I'll get up when my wife gets up and drive her to work so I can have the car. I just won't take the chance. I once had to ride to work with a threat of rain, and I thought "I can get home before it starts" but I didn't make it. I had to pull off the road to wait it out for two hours under the bay of an abandoned car wash. At my age, I'm like a cat. I don't like getting wet... Yeah, that's it...
WRT the windscreen,I had a similar experience with the Ermax I put on Diana. I absolutely concur that adding a bit more screen totally changes the way the bike feels at speed. The buffeting was cut way down, and I noticed a significant reduction in the noise too. The only problem I've had is that instead of getting pounded in the chest with the wind, I get a burble right at the top of my visor at the top of my helmet. I'm 5'-10", and the Ermax windscreen is about 3" - 4"inches too short to be perfect. I wish I could get them to make me a special screen that was 3" taller, without the weird shaped sides.
I heard somewhere, and I don't know where I heard this :o , but there was supposed to be some guy that put a new Ermax windscreen on his Kymco Xciting 400i, and went out for a ride. I heard (and I don't remember where I heard this :o ) but he got out on the road, and looked at the speedometer, and found that he was doing almost 70mph. I heard (and I don't remember where I heard this :o ) but he had thought he was only doing about 50. As I said, I don't remember where I heard that, but having a good windscreen does make a huge difference. ???

We made it to Baltimore last week (no help to the PA->MD roads.) It was a cake walk. I almost caught the exhaust on fire though (the fluff material between the exhaust and cover.)
But i had been running pretty high for a while due to the traffic being so bad.
I highly recommend the windshield after more riding. And honestly i don’t even care about how it keeps you from turning the handle bars that extra inch.
Also, since no one delivered on some kind of top/side case. I ran a small bungie from each side (the first bolts on the railing) of the trunk, to jansport messenger bags.
This worked INCREDIBLY well, far better than expecting, our clothes stayed dry in the rain on the first leg, and held up until a really bad bit of rain blinded us.
If you can’t get your hands on a case, I recommend this sort of idea.

Alexis,
No picture(s) of your set up?
Ok, first observation for me on the gas fill ups. Three fill ups. One by dealer which I'm not sure if it was to the top or just close, then 2 by me right to the top.
After I get consistent with the fill limit, my readings will improve the accuracy of course.
First bar is approx 1.2 gallons used.
Second bar...not sure yet. Didn't notice the mileage when the 2nd bar disappeared.
Third bar is 2.3 gallons used.
Fourth bar or flashing used 2.8 gallons or had 1/2 gallon left.
From the time the flashing bar started until I filled up was only 3 miles, so that should still be close enough for estimating your range.

Alexis,
No picture(s) of your set up?
I was going to do the Fuelly thing, but just got lazy, and I'm not that retentive... I can go about 200-210 miles or so on a tank, which comes out to somewhere around 60-62 mpg. But I don't dog it, I don't rev it unnecessarily, and I don't slam away from the lights. I drive it like a Rolls Royce, not an Aston Martin. I imagine that if I rode her a little harder, I'd get 50-55mpg or so. It's a far cry from the 85-90 mpg I used to get on the PCX, but that was only 153cc, and Diana is 400cc.
I'd estimate around 180 - 200 miles on range, on a full tank.
-
I do a lot of "Stopping to smell the roses" type riding.
I take photos of the scoots with flowers, old buildings, scenic views, animals, etc.
When I do this, I usually put it on center stand so I don't have to cut off the engine.
I know it isn't much, but just a 1/10 of a gallon can make a big change to your mpg on a scooter.
I've been using Acar app on my phone for a few years. Long term tracking gives a more accurate mpg indication.
Thanks for ya'lls feed back / input.
-
Still working on my set up, No pictures yet!
I noticed something big, the peak fuel efficiency for me, with the windshield, is somewhere between 55mph-65mph, with light wind, at 75 I burn through fuel in about 2 hours.

Heya, Jon!
ET, I don't know about the PCX being quicker than the 400i. I had the 300 GTI and I can say from acceleration and being on the highway that the 400i is quicker than my 300. Your PCX being a 150 should not be that fast. I had a Honda SH-150 in Rome and found the acceleration a little on the sluggish side, especially when I was racing against Honda SH-300's :P Nonetheless, the 400i for me is quite tossable and the seat is by far the most comfortable one that Kymco makes....I hated the 300 seat. Honda does make great seats.
-
You know, you could be entirely right. The only thing I have to compare to the X400i is the PCX. And the Honda felt a little quicker to me, judging from how long it took me to get across the light at a particular intersection. Then again, it just may be that the PCX was smaller, and therefore just seemed quicker.
In any case, I like the X400i far better than I did the Honda. More room, more comfort, more oomph, more capacity, and just overall more.

All we ever seem to get around here is either sleet or freezing rain. (Not that I know what the difference is)
In 2014, we had just under 3" of freezing rain/sleet in the area, and there were hundreds of trees and limbs down all over town, and most of the city was without power up to 11 days in some areas. We were without power for 6 days. When the thaw started and we could get out, it looked like a war zone around here.
The last time we had a real snowstorm was 1987.

Has anyone else beside Alexis gotten an aftermarket windscreen.
Looks like the Puig is 4-6" taller while the Givi is 10" taller.
I like the Puig design better, but want it a bit taller (I think). Thus my question if anyone has the Puig for comparison.
Alexis, now that you've had the Givi a while, how bad did it hurt the mileage?
Last week I did my 600 mile service. I used Honda regular oil. I'll use synth next time. Used the HiFlo HF568. From the looks of it, they make it for Kymco.
After all the service and idling down, I still got 61mpg on that tank of fuel.
The most I had was 62.9 during break-in.
Next full tank after break-in was 66.8 mpg. I've tried to be consistent as possible in using just 2 gas pumps.
During break-in, never over 60mph, and since break-in never over 75mph. Will open it up a little after the 1000 mile mark.
Funny side note: I've ridden motorcycles and scooters since the early 60's (intentionally vague because I feel like I'm still 30 yo).
Not once in all those years have I made the mistake of confusing the controls of the scooter & motorcycle.
A few days ago, I pull away from an intersection turning left and up a hill. I travel this road almost daily.
I lifted my left foot and let off the throttle just a hair in an attempt to shift into 2nd.
I laughed out loud at myself and looked around to see if anyone saw me!

I’ve got to say, I enjoy hamming it on the throttle a bit, especially at 4k miles now.
However, I’ve noticed an INCREASE in mpg from the givi. I feel the the air is running smoother and creating less drag?

To get an idea of the Givi fit, do you mind sharing your height/inseam vs where the Givi comes up to.
Are you looking through it, over it, does it come up to your chin, eyes, etc......
And thanks for your quick replies and help.

6’1†34-35†inseam. I feel like it might come up to my chin(straight upright), depending on how I sit, and I look over it for the most part, but down through it occasionally to scan the brief second in front of me.
Even sitting straight up I don’t feel wind knocking my helmet, perfectly smooth.

Taiwan Big Scooter Shop has the Kymco large: https://taiwanbigscootershop.com/collections/xciting-parts/products/kymco-oem-xciting-400-long-windshield
Ebay has Givi, Ermax, and Puig.
You can find the one you like, get the part number and then do a search world wide to different vendors.

And this is a bit less than I actually paid for mine.
Be aware, they're going to cancel your order unless you stay in touch and stay on top of them, and keep asking where your windscreen is. They'll "discover" one in the warehouse, and ship it out to you.
At least, that's what happened to me.
This is a superb windscreen. almost 5mm thick. The only thing about it I don't like is I wish it were about 3"-4" taller.

My Like 200i is much lighter than your new 400i but mine goes up on the center stand with only my foot pressure.
I am very interested in the 400i -- are you still happy with it? What are the best and worst things about it?
-
No, not happy.......I'm ecstatic...... ;D
random order as I think about it:
Light weight feel, still lots of get up and go IF you need/want it.
Found out 2 days ago, it is good in the rain. Had a gully washer with 30mph gusts and it handled it well.
Still having the short OEM shield, I was still able to ride with one hand while protecting my mouth/nose with my left hand.
Worst thing to me is the DOT requirement of the stalk signals and mirror signals instead of the integrated units. 16" requirement between signals.
The odd ball oil filter can be a problem as you will definitely have to order it.
The owners manual is half joke. Wrong dash and operating procedures for the instruments in the manual.
I have a short inseam (28"), so the height is a challenge, but I'm adapting.
I like the sound, performance, mileage, & looks. The ride is smoother than my CTX1300 on the same roads, but no where as nice as my old Gold Wings.
I started out at about 62 mpg and since break-in service it is about 66 mpg(66.8 on the last fuel up). OF course that is indicated.
I need a longer trip to verify, but a short 32 mile trip indicates that should be 64.2 mpg. That was using the GPS on my phone as the initial check.
According the phone GPS, my 32 miles was 30.8 approx. My speed at indicated 43, was 41. I'll use my Garmin later for more validating.
I also don't like how the luggage rack on the rear has the bracket come down to attach to the tag mount. Aesthetic, but still a peeve of mine.
I do not like the red strip across the seat. No, it doesn't hurt anything and not noticeable when riding, but I like to de-badge everything and it is just one of those burr under the saddle(figuratively) things for me.
I don't know for sure if it is because I'm getting older and thus more careful, but this is the first bike I've not drug hard parts while taking sharp curves in my riding area.
Also 2 days ago, I noticed a very small clanking sound as I slowed down to turn. I heard it 3 times. I was stopping and checking everything to makes sure nothing was coming loose. After 2 hours, I realized it was just the brake levers. Now that I know what it was, I don't hear it any more....yeah, you know what I mean.
Grated bridges, twisties up/down hill, and tar/gravel roads are handled fine (daily ride for me).
A low grade video of my daily ride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Spia1QKEo&t=3s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Spia1QKEo&t=3s)
So, as you can see, the dislikes are not a problem any more than a color choice would be. All the things that matter are really good.
Ask something else specific and I'll answer if I can......
-

Thank you! Thank you! Nice looking scoot.
No need to ask you anything more right now but if I think of something I surely will. Thanks for the in-depth review and the video -- nice country roads -- beautiful scenery.
You know, I find my CTX1300 kind of rough riding too. It is no where near as smooth as my H-D Softails. And the CTX1300 weighs about the same as a Softail -- 730 lbs.
-
Draco: I too have an X400i and I love it just as much as Alexis and Clampett love theirs. Maybe a little bit more. I too have added a better windscreen (the Ermax) and I echo the warning that parts are hell the ruggedest mile to get (I've been waiting over a month for an oil filter and service parts!) and I also didn't care for the DOT signals, so I have changed mine out. I've already completed the rear turn signals (looks fantastic! Tutorial on the board) and the fronts are coming up as soon as I get my 600 (more like 740) mile service done. I'll post a tutorial thread on that one too, FWIW.
Let me recommend getting a pair of foam grip sleeves to slip on over the stock grips if you plan on doing any distance riding, as that makes grip pressure and hand fatigue vanish. Got mine from Amazon, but there are other sources out there.
Can't recommend this machine enough.

Thank you for your comments. I want to get a larger displacement scooter, not to replace my 200i, but to have a bit more power when I want it. I'm not sure what I will purchase -- it depends on what pops up on Craigslist most likely. I'm looking for at least 250-300cc and up.
Thanks again!

Alexis, is your givi screen clear or opaque. What was the model number( I can speak and read Italian so I might order from the Castelgondolfo site)? I was looking at the puig also. I was just curious because the givi model looks a little opaque.
Thanks

Beware the difference in height. I think the Puig is 4.5 inches taller while the Givi is about 10" more. Working from memory here, so that may not be exact, but I do remember seeing the Givi was taller.

I got the clear, As I was unsure if I’d need to look through it (I do occasionally) and didn’t want it to obscure night vision! I’ll get you that model number early tomorrow!
Also, I have now passed the 5000mile mark (closer to 5100 now)
I’ve had this machine for coming up quickly on two full months!
And BOY do I have some good experience with it at this point.
There’s a heat shield on the first exposed bend of the exhaust, I highly recommend checking the bolts on it.
I discovered I lost one, and the last one was becoming loose (the roads up here are absolutely awful.
(I found replacements at homedepot if anyone wants to know those.)
I used to be (still am sort of) a racing cyclist, and personally love hard grips, but I do have my cycling fingerless gloves for any longer riding (>3 hours).
Doing a quick highspeed burst (possibly speeding, but very shortly!) seemingly shifts the CVT to its highest point, allowing you to run 500-1000 rpm LOWER for the same speeds. (I’ve been testing this and going to 85-90 seems to cause it, and it lasts until a long shut off at which point you’ll need to repeat it) I can’t recommend breaking the law however.
Also I’ve been using castrol (?) 5w/40 full synthetic motor oil in my scooter since the first change.
Also I recommend amazon prime to anyone who owns this scooter, I easily found my sparkplug, and oil filter on there, and they arrive about two days later!
At 5000 miles I’d like to give an endorsement for this scooter, it’s amazing in cities, and road tearing, tire shreddingly fun on highways.
It’s not given me a single issue, and does whatever I ask, the moment I ask.
It’s comfortable and has a good weight to it. Fun to corner (no chicken strips here), and keeps up with just about anyone.
I love Victoire, and how much fun everything is on her.
I hope everyone else enjoys it just as much!

I think it's because there is no dedicated 400i sub-forum. Maybe that's why it might have gotten missed..
Just spitballing here...

A few months into ownership of my 2012 LIKE200i I was sitting at the reservoir and noticed one of the little heat sheild screws was gone!
At this point I don't remember if I locktited the new ones. But they're still there. I remove stuff and respray the exhaust every few years.....so maybe there's no Red on 'em.
It's the only bit the scoot has shed in 5 yrs.

Hi there !
I'm new on the forum and new owner of a 2014' Xciting 400i that replaced my BB650.
I'm french, living near Paris and I chose this model because it's much better than a Yamaha XMax in the 400cc category which might be the best for city and surrounding.
I'm willing to change the screen, the original one being really to short. I was more on the Puig, which looks better and seems suficient for protection. However obviously the Givi/Kappa is higher and will be more comfortable so I'm hesitating ! Isn't the Givi too long/high to look above it ? Because looking throught it while riding under rain and in traffic is really annoying...
Thanks for your help and advices ;)

Welcome aboard.
I had the same questions when I was trying to choose. Alex is taller than me, but sits about the same in the saddle.
I'm about 40 inches (100cm) tall in the saddle. So, rather than spend the money, I made a hard plastic extension to tape on my OEM screen.
I made it 4 inches (10cm) above the OEM which is the same as the Puig touring screen. The wind hit right at my chin. The OEM let the wind hit me starting in the upper chest. The air for me was clean, BUT it made lots of noise in my helmet (wind hitting helmet right at the bottom). With the extension, the noise was reduced, but the frequency was deeper and really irritated my ears. After making a couple different size extension, I found that 8 inch (20cm) was just right.
The Givi is taller and will be more than enough for my height.
You are probably a little different size, but hopefully this will give you some ideas.
Another idea I've had is to cut the Givi a bit shorter, then order the Air Flow kit and mount it. Still waiting for my Givi to arrive, so haven't decided yet.
-
Greetings Max, and welcome to the forum.
Nice scooter
Curious - why did you choose the Kymco over the Yamaha?
(went to Paris American High School in the 60's....no scooter. Always on foot --- unless I could catch a ride in a 2CV !)
Please post photos of your scooter in France (& Paris ?!)
Again, welcome.

I got my rear rack in today and mounted it. I thought there were 2 versions of the rack due to seeing some without the 2 bars support that attach to the tag brace. Now I realize it is just that some don't use the brace.
Now I'd like to ask if anyone here is not using the brace and how is it working if so? I was afraid it would stress the 2 bolt mounts on the front, but I much prefer the look IF it will work ok without them.
Mounted my new Givi screen today also. Finished at sundown. Will try to get a few photos tomorrow.

I was looking for the rack without the braces that mount to the tag mount.
I found one Italian site and one Philippine rider that says they used either the 300 or 500 grab rails which have the plate in the rear instead of the open space like the 400i comes stock. Then mount the luggage rack plate to the grab rail bracket which will allow mounting the top case without the support brackets.
If I can locate and purchase one of these grab rails at a decent price, I'll give it a try.

Hey everyone! Long time no see!
So it’s been 9500 miles.
That’s including a 2000 mile trip in July, where she was fully loaded (two passengers, and luggage for a week)
And the rear tire blew yesterday.
Had no intentions of running it so low, but in the middle of a move and didn’t want to order the tire till I moved. Just in case.
But I ordered a michelin rear tire, hopefully get it mid next week!
Where are y’all at so far!

Good to see you Alexis. Man you put on the miles....I barely put on a 1000 over the course of 7 months. I would be curious about your thoughts after 10k miles on the 400i performance.
Dean
-
Will absolutely get you the details!
But I did just move to Colorado! At about 7k feet I’ve lost a not insignificant amount of power, but it’s still more than enough!
I’m loving this new tire so far, as well. It’s the Michelin City. Still new, it’s snowed a few times, and moving has been eating into riding time!
And I’ll have it probably to atleast 18k miles by the end of 2019, huge trip planned for the summer!

Hey gang,
Just want to pipe in to say I appreciate all the great feedback from the owners. I'm looking to get a maxi scoot soon and the 400i is on my shortlist. Actually, it's now at the top of my list since finding a dealer who's blowing them out at nearly half the price of the B400. The catch is I'll have to take care of minor maintenance, so before pulling (squeezing?) the trigger, I'll need to make sure I can source the usual parts and consumables.

Actually, it's now at the top of my list since finding a dealer who's blowing them out at nearly half the price of the B400. The catch is I'll have to take care of minor maintenance, so before pulling (squeezing?) the trigger, I'll need to make sure I can source the usual parts and consumables.
Call, or visit on line kymcopartsmonster.com
See what they have.

Thanks!
I also realized that I have a colleague in Taipei. Maybe she can do me a solid now and then.

Just something to note about starting the Kymco 400i at low temperatures. I had the bike in my garage today at around 40 deg F and it started with no problems. I had to place my bike outside today while they were fixing my garage door and then about an hour later tried to start the bike in 30 degree F weather and it would not start. It had a full charge because I have had it on a battery tender, but there seems to be at temperature at which it wont start. I think the 500i had similar problems. Just an FYI if you have experienced similar problems.

That is a concern!
Please describe how it behaved at 30 degrees.
Turning over a touch slowly...?
Is the stock battery not carrying enough CCA to satisfy the EFI at that temperature?
When heading out to ride on a cold day, I'll have a lot on my mind - bike starting perfectly must be a given.
I could not own a scooter that would not start at 30°F.

At around 30 deg, it was barely turning over. I was afraid the starter was going to burn out. The battery had a full charge according to my battery tender. I didn't check the voltage from the battery. It had the normal starting noise, but it seemed that the engine was not engaging(turning over). It would almost engage for a blip, but then nothing. After I got the bike in the garage, it warmed up to around 35 deg, it turned over with a little bit of hesitancy. At 40 deg I had no problem starting the engine. There does seem to be a temperature issue with this bike. I don't normally ride the bike until at least 50 deg outside. I hope that helps.

Aaarrgghhhh! Sounds like Stig said, they put a scrawney, low CCA battery in like the 500i ! I have two batteries in parallel in my UXV 500i just so it will start properly below 30 deg. F! It is a UTILITY vehicle like a TRACTOR! 'Sposed to be an all-weather machine not a FAIR-weather playtoy!!

Is there a battery that I could replace this with in order to have a stronger start for colder weather Karl?

I have a gel battery in my 500, going on 3 years now MOTOBATT.

You can measure your current battery - then go to YUASA web site chart and look for all the batteries of the same size (or close - if there is a little fudge room) and which have the connecting posts in the same configuration - to find a more powerful battery. I went from a stock 9amp to a 14amp in my LIKE200i. Was only 5mm taller and much more CCA.
Stig
-
You cannot go wrong with a Yuasa like Stig was saying. I'm too cheap so I got a "Chrome" battery off Amazon for about half of a Yuasa. The fat lady ain't sung yet as far as longevity but it is good so far getting close to that crummy white label thing the dealer put in since he robbed the oem battery along with other stuff. That "Chrome" brand had a battery that equalled Yuasa specs with 175 CCA and was as big as the Yuasa.

Thank you for the suggestions :)

I hope they don't have cold weather starting problems,my local Kymco dealer has a brand new 2018 Xciting 400i marked down to $4999. I'm really considering purchasing it.

Have them roll it out to the unheated warehouse for the night ----Oh, wait - you're in Texas. Does it get cold there?
(sure as h_ll never did when I was in medic trainging at Ft Sam!)

Stig,we have 2 seasons in Texas.hotter than Hades and cold. Not quite your Ohio cold but lots of upper 20's to mid 30 morning. Already about wore the seat out sitting on that 400i at the dealer :). The fun (or trouble) I could have with a touring scooter.

My stock battery does 14F starts within basically 1-2 seconds!
Never given me a single issue! Maybe up in NY they swapped the battery??

WE HIT 10K miles!
Been about 8 months!
Now, I did notice a difference when I moved from 1000 ft above sea level to a whole extra mile up. I fixed this by (forgive me) removing the air filter.
I’m going to get a cold air filter soon, but I check the airbox daily, with not dust or moisture besides always a tiny smear of oil (like finger print size)
Since doing this I’ve notices I’m probably either back to normal, or 95% there.
Never had a start issue, except for one time I left it on without the engine on, and I waited an hour, then it started fine again.
She’s got a new rear tire (michelin city)
And she just had all the oils changed.
I haven’t noticed a drop in any power, she still zips away (though on some days she doesn’t like carrying two people, see 7000 ft).
I’m getting about 55-60mpg now as well.
I love this scooter very much, she’s never let me down and handled the worst of the worst (rode from work in a blizzard one day.)
I’m planning to do an engine check service, to check the insides. I fear I may have asked a bit too much more than a few times, though she never fought me at these points so who knows.
This has been the best 6800$ I’ve ever spent. (6650 plus the givi windscreen)
Every ride has been an adventure I’d never want to change.
We actually celebrated last night (9940 miles, 88 mile round trip) it’s really hard to put this all into words honestly and sounds stupid I’m sure, but I consider this vehicle part of me and my fiance’s family.
I am planning to purchase a Kawasaki Concours soon. For LONG range trips (5000 mile round trip planned this summer!)
But this scooter will always be our roundtown, and to and fro work machine.
Also thanks to everyone on this forum for help (I FORGOT HOW TO MAKE THE OIL SERVICE LIGHT TURN OFF AGAIN), and support!
Here’s to 10,000 more!

I have no idea what the air box on a Xciting 400i looks like, but maybe you should also consider smearing the inside of the box with a thin layer of ordinary grease. That's exactly what I did to my "el cheapo" scooter's air box, as well as the air box on my previous bike.
Most dirt that enters the air box will get stuck in the grease and will never enter the engine. In my current scooter's case I couldn't even find any trace of dirt on my modified filter when I opened the box for inspection. All dirt got strapped in the grease inside the box, as well as the inlet pipe to the box. (The inlet pipe has also been smeared with a thin layer of grease, as deep as possible).

Ha! You beat us all to the punch! Mine needs a wash, too. Your emotional attachment is noted and shared. I have been "attached" to a good many machines over the years from motorcycles to ships and to scooters. I suspect there is something spiritual about such attachment that nearly makes any troubles with the macine really small. Conversely, obseving people who have zero connection seem to have bigger problems that seem impossible. Sorta, maybe like Noah building a huge boat and sailing for over a year. He never even built a raft prior to the flood...

Well, looking at the 10,000 report above - looks like that hard start in the cold was not typical.
So, what color is your new scooter going to be?
(I still recall standing in formation, before sunup, at Brooke Army Medical Center - with the sweat running down the center of my back - after a night of sweat running into my ears in the bunk. The smell wafting over from the mess hall in that humidity - was simply astounding! At least in 'Nam we wore tropical weight, no T-shirts - and could roll up the sleeves - and, in the late 60's, it was only slightly more dangerous than San Antonio on a Friday night)

Is it true Kymco will not be selling the Xciting 400i in the US for 2019? Read that Yamaha will not be offering their Xmax 400 here either.

Well, don't that beat all!
So, only the Burgman ($8000+ fees) 400 & the 650 remain in the over 300 market?
Does SYM sell a 400?
They just must not sell for dink.
I know that before I laid down the $ for 400cc scooter I'd be looking hard at a motorcycle for the same, or less, money.

I noticed yesterday that there were some 2 dozen for sale scattered around the USA....listed at $5999 plus fees.
$2000 less than a Burgman 400. Even this Japanese made Suzuki takes a real dive at resale time in this country.
Wonder how the Kymco will do?
Probably some pretty good Internet deals, with discounts and shipping, avaliable out there if willing to contact 3 or 4 dealers. I always connect by internet and phone with at least two or three dealers when buying new.

Moxie Scooters in Texas has one 400i left for $4999. I'm torn between that scooter and a brand new 2016 Kawasaki Versys 650 LT for $5500.

Yeah, get a lot more bike for the $ when compared to scoots.
Go for the 650 and never look back!
Stig
PS: Moxie are good people - he helped me years ago get the crash bars for my LIKE200iLX when no one else had them

Depending on your age, a scooter might be a better option. I started getting knee and back prooblems while I was riding my previous bike and did not have any option other than selling the bike. I then bought the scooter and it works perfectly for me. The knee and back problems are gone.
Scooters also offer some other pro’s:
1. Better wind and rain protection (legs).
2. More storage.
3. No chain lubrication and maintenance.
4. CVT belts are easier to replace (compared to chain replacements).
5. CVT belts are cheaper than chains.
6. In general I think maintenance costs should be cheaper, compared to maintenance costs on bikes.
Just my 2 cents.
-
Also depends on the riding you wanna do!
And I like to vouch for scooters if it’s your first time, given you time to focus on aspects of riding a bit more, and not worrying and shifting and such.
IMHO

If I wanted a scooter, I’d never consider a motorcycle simply because I could get more for the money. A motorcycle could never function as a scooter (no built in storage ). When I was riding, I cannot count the number of times I stopped off to grab a few groceries, or purchased a few clothing items, or other UNPLANNED items. Having said that, If I had the disposable income, I could see purchasing both. But if I could afford only one, I’d buy a big scooter similar to what I had or larger.

Mr Forbes, bike riders just have to be more inventive than the average scooter jockey.
I regularly brought home groceries, gal cans of paint .....and one 5' live cut Xmas tree on the rear rack of my Honda CB350. When you're young - and financially challenged - it's all just an adventure😊
Stig
-
True. When I was young, i could carry stuff on my BICYCLE that I couldn’t even IMAGINE trying to carry now. Necessity breeds innovation.

The Versys LT I'm looking at has way more storage than a scoot with the easily removable hard saddlebags and it readily accepts an aftermarket topcase. It's more of sport/touring bike than a cruiser. It's been about 9 yrs.but I logged over 20k miles on a very fast R6 sport bike,I could probably adjust if I decide to go this route.

The LT comes with quick release 27 ltr.panniers and hand guards. The one I found is a brand new 2016 leftover for $5500.9

Help. My 2018 Xcoting 400I Abs fell victim to the heat wave in the NE U.S. It was parked and the asphalt melted. It fell over and broke the right front mirror off. Any idea where I can get a replacement? Parts for this bike are hard to find and there is a lot of confusion among sellers about which model is which. Any help is greatly appreciated.
