Title: Are foam air filters available for Super 8 150's?
Post by: FLRider on November 27, 2018, 11:02:22 PM
I own a 2012 Super 8 150, and it's been running good.  I've had an old issue re-emerge, and I'm seeking to replace my air filter with a foam filter, if it's available.

In short, when I first got this with 3K miles on it, I ran it for a few weeks, and began noticing oil dripping from my air filter box.  I never checked inside, thinking I'd blown something in the engine.  But no stalling or problems running it, so I left it.

Well, about 5000 miles later I bought a new air filter, as I'd done all other maintenance on it.  When I opened my air box, a small amount of old oil ran out.  I learned later that running engines too hard can blow oil past the rings, even ending up in the air box.  I replaced the air filter, have run it normally, with no problems or oil leaking.

Well, I had a tune-up done a month ago, and I'd been running it full-throttle for 30 second spurts, seeing if I actually could make it over 50mph.  I did downhill, but not much more.  And recently, I saw an oil dripping below my air box while it was parked.

I've considered replacing the air filter since it's running rough on start-up (it'll sputter or die after the initial 30 seconds if left alone).  I wondered if the air filter is partially clogged.  I know I can buy a normal Hiflo paper air filter for around $15, but I ran motorcycles for years with foam air filters, and they ran with no problems.  I checked K&N, but I didn't see a match.

Does anyone use a foam filter for their Super 8 150?  I'd like to pay once and maintain it as necessary.

Thanks for you help.   :)

I made my own foam filter and have been using it for the last 15,000 miles or so.  I took a dirty stock filter and removed the paper filter material.  Then I took a sheet of filter foam material and cut a piece to the right size and glued it in with E6000 glue.  Now I just wash it every 5,000 miles or so.  I'll see if I can find a link to where I described the process.
