Daughter and I arrived to join the "Star Wars XVIII"- premier-like queue at our large local grocers today.
Up early, I geared up with armored jacket, boots, gloves, etc.
Daughter refused to wear my helmet ("No, my hair...!" she said)
Store opened at 7AM. We're in line at 6:45 behind @ 50, of the 150 competitors, in the dark.
I went for bread and cream cheese....daughter fell into 2nd line at rear of store queueing to one spot for "T-paper, Kleenex, hamburger, chicken and paper towels."
She scored a 30 pack, I my cheese, newspaper and bread.
She waited for me on the dark sidewalk in front of the store entrance with her giant pack of T-paper - this is where it gets scary.....
She was approached in such a way by 3 or 4 late comers - that a watching store security officer took her by the arm and advised her to wait inside, "for your safety" !
My daughter said, she was "ready for 'em!". Her prize was as a gift for her brother's family.
Lady in line in front of us said, "It's only going to get worse."
God bless the grocery stores for trying to keep up with this insanity.

If people simply didn't hord there would be pleanty . I blame the news media for creating the hording situation. Never let a crisis go to waste is the news motto.
Went to get frozen veggies but the only thing left was lima beans.
-
What you both said!

anybody checked the price of ammo lately ? 7.62x39 I bought a year ago is up over 30%, mostly the past 2 weeks, and it's hard to find the non-corrosive in bulk
I buy my TP at Staples, for my office, a 96 roll box, but I have recently retired, found jobs for my employees, and what is left over is probably a 5 year supply now

You are so, so right.
We have three week's worth of food or so here. Haven't felt the urge to go and buy more...

How's the UK fixed for toilet paper??
If good, could you estimate airpost for a 36 roll?
Thanks, Stig

Evidently the people who hord TP are full of shat. ::)

Kipling...keep one's head while all around losing theirs? Yup, that's about it. Waiting for a coupla days dry for a ride....gas under 2 bucks locally....getting horny for an air bath!

we keep a rotating 9-12 month supply of food, we buy normal amounts as we constantly use the oldest, in summer, fresh from the garden, much of what we have frozen, fruit & vegetable wise, we grew, we don't buy much sugar, except to feed our bees, at times. We get more honey than we can use, we trade some for maple syrup from a neighbor
am I a prepper ? I don't think so, I count on the electrical grid, I can make my own for short periods during outages. I have the right amount of guns, I would like to have more ammo for my hunting guns especially a better stocked up variety of 12ga
It is my heritage, my parents canned produce when I was real young, but transitioned to a freezer, shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis iirc. My grandparents canned, my great grandparents canned. and used corn cobs in the outhouse.

Anyone that needs 144 rolls of tp for a 14 day stay at home should see a doctor as they have other issues besides worrying about a virus

in NH all schools have been closed a week already and minimum 2 more weeks, restaurants and bars are takeout only, special relief to allow bars to sell takeout beer & wine, banks are drive up only, or appointment, court cases have been continued
glad I replaced the motor in the driver side window
I have cubital tunnel surgery scheduled for Mar 30, something I wasn't sure would happen, a lot of elective surgeries are being postponed
this is gonna hit a lot of people HARD, kids home from school means either mom or dad hafta stay home and home school/supervise remote school. depending on the job, both parents could be out of work
I'll be ok, I'm retired, or at least trying to be, I get my monthly SS deposit, and medicare & supplements take care of my medical needs BUT I guess that also puts me in a high risk group at least when I do work, I am socially isolated and physically isolated as well

Remember, the Preppers' are arming themselves (again) - so best to serpentine with that precious cargo!
Well scored, you!

That gave me a chuckle. I wondered whether they planned to use most of the TP to blow their nose in..? But apparently, an excess of tissues flushed down toilets is becoming a problem in some parts according to NYT.
Another problem I think has to do with pest control.
My area has large numbers of restaurants and eateries which are now shut down. I hope they won't turn into breeding grounds for vermin and worse: incubators for all kinds of bugs.

fwiw, I am in the wastewater industry, I have seen reports, mostly of handi-wipes clogging pump stations,
imho, the run on TP is cause a lot of people didn't buy TP before this pandemic, they stole it from work, now that people are working and educating at home, they are not going to work where they normally steal it, plus the greater demand for use at home
yup, I see this as a boon to my work, the majority of my work has been designing replacement onsite systems, excess TP will increase the demand for my work

It just so happened that I was running low on TP. I went to Wally World to get some but they were out of my normal brand although they did have a fair amount of other brands on the shelf. I had not yet heard about the run on TP so I didn't buy any. Later that day I heard people were hoarding TP so I went back the next day and they had restocked so I bought my normal amount. Another day and the shelves were probably bare. By the time I run low again I think that the TP shortage will have gone away.

What's wrong with a handful of grass from the garden?
Toilet paper. Pfft!

I'll take sphagnum moss over grass anyday

Dock leaves and comfrey also work well.
-
"Comfrey"? Is that a bit like Aloe Vera? Keeps yer botty soft?

Used to have a dog who would come scooting his rear around the coffee table on his way to his water bowl in the kitchen.
Never thought it polite to ask him what the h_ll he thought he was doing on my carpet!
Wife was always embarrassed when he'd do that with company in the house. I tried to train him to do with my in-laws in for dinner.
But, he wasn't trainable.
Some of the family miss him.

Yes. We've all had dogs like that! My worst experience was retrieving a half out elastic band from the dogs bum 'ole! When it twanged out... well, you can guess the rest.

no dogs here, we're cat people, we don't have one now, we recently had to put ours down, we had her about 8 years, she was a stray that we adopted, vet said about 4 years old, a petite siamese, fearless, turned away any animal that came in yard, dog or cat, seen her give more than one dog a bloody nose with her paw, claws extended, so fast you didn't see it happen. Best mouser we ever had. She would eat their brains and leave the rest as her trophy to show us, sometime she would bring live squirrels into the house.... in our bed once. She got in a fight with a racoon ripped her face wide open healed a bit lopsided, lost one of her fangs. Got into it with a coyote. Broken spine just behind back legs, we had to have her tail amputated.
Oz (our cat's name) had to learn to pee and poop all over, without the tail, at first, we had to help her (we didn't have a rubber band to tug on ), but she learned, it was after she had lost her tail, that she brought a red tail hawk to the doorstep... don't ask me how she won that fight, the bird was as big as she was
But, complications of the amputation caught up with her after 5 years

We do invest a heck of a lot in our pets don't we? Every one we've lost down the years has caused real heartbreak, but the love they give makes it all worthwhile.
On a lighter note, did you hear the old truism about "Dogs have owners, cats have servants!"? We have both and that is so true.
-
we woulda had Oz put down 5 years ago when the coyote broke her spine, but my daughter is a vet technician, so we got her discount. Our cat acted more like a dog, Siamese cats talk, different meows, we knew what she wanted, or that someone pulled into the drive, or an animal in the yard. She also would come to you if you whistled, similar to calling a dog, and did not respond to "kitty-kitty at all. Something that a lot of people don't know or understand about cats, they are obligate carnivores, they can only digest meat, veggie and fillers go right thru and make the poop messy & stinky/ Fed em raw meat only, and the poops don't smell and they are like hard marbles, I know, TMI. Her favorite food was chicken gizzards. actually cheaper than commercial cat food that is loaded with non meat fillers

Nah, just too tight to spend the money.
Hidden secret though - our supplier of office stationary products also sells.....toilet roll! (and a whole lot besides)
I now have 84 rolls of pristine cushioned 4 ply that was delivered to my office the other day. No fighting, no hassle. I've not even paid for them yet.
All I need now is some shotgun shells to defend my secret stash for when the dirtyarses find out and come after me.
