Title: DTX360 - First Impressions
Post by: Neil955i on February 20, 2023, 08:49:29 AM
Right out of the traps we will all concede that no bike / scooter is perfect?  For my purposes I think the DTX will come pretty close, but let’s get my personal cons out of the  way before I tackle the much longer list of pros.

Mirrors: not great. They look good and give a clear view … of my elbows!  I really have to twist my body to see what is going on behind me!

Ambient temperature reading: there isn’t one.  Boo. I liked that on my X-Town.

And that’s it so far. I’ll come back and edit this if more rear their heads, but for now they’re the only two niggles.

Edit: A further significant con has raised its head after a 170+ mile day this week and it is the seat!  At about 65 miles in one hit my rear end was crying “uncle”!  Conclusion, as stock this seat is just not built for touring. Should be a relatively inexpensive (about £150) job to have it modified to insert gel pads into the memory foam. Maybe a project for winter when I can let the seat go off to the reupholstery expert for a week or two?

What is good / improved over my previous ride then? Firstly power, it’s noticeably better on the DTX even at running in speeds, more oomph and I like it.  Visibility of the dash information is very old codger-friendly!  No excuses if I collect a ticket, the digital speedo  digits are mahoosive!  Clock is also readable without the need for glasses- for me at least. In fact, all the dash is easily legible.

Handling is as good as my XT and bear in mind that benefited from YSS shocks. Semi knobbly tyres* grip well in the dry, no experience in the wet yet. Wider handlebars may not be to everyone’s taste, but I like them. Low speed manoeuvres are a doddle.

Further ride due today and I’ll report back and upload photos later.

* Manufacturer CST.  Unless things change, they'll be gone when I need to change as they are utterly unavailable here!  Happy enough to slap on Michelin CG2s or Pirelli Rossos though.

Will do Hawk.  For the moment though all my spare time will go into riding it.  I want to get that first service behind me ASAP!

I hope so Art.  Have to say the Dealer I got it from fill me with far more confidence than ever did the one I had the X-Town from...

THANKyou for the pictures!......you were leaking points there, w/o them!
Two things,,,yes mirror stems look short.
You have TWO Kymco dealers?!

I think I see a 'dip-stick', yes? (not a fan of oil "windows", myself)

new scooters smell good!

Very nice, Neil! GREAT pictures! Awaiting further comments....
Need some shots of the gauges/instruments you are raving about!

Yes, I, too, see a dipstick. Wonders never cease.

Actually Karl/Tom, my old X-Town had a dipstick too!

Shots of the dash will follow, hopefully tomorrow?

Forgot to mention earlier, the top box. I asked for my Givi to be moved over using a new DTX rack. Er, no! Seems Givi have abandoned the UK market, they advertise a Givi rack, but you can’t buy one anywhere here. Shad, on the other hand, readily available. Ask me who makes stuff for Shad? You guessed it, Givi!  To quote our American cousins, go figure.

Here you are guys, proof of the existence of the very rare (these days) dip stick and two shots of the dash one in bright sunlight (yes!) and an optimum one in the shade of my garage.

These taken at the end of another 20 miler outing today around the local bendy roads.  Getting more into the groove of it now even though I was using my (still) new leather jacket for the first time this year.  Stiff leather aside, the DTX handles very well when you throw it on it's ear even on tyres which are not out and out road tyres.  The seat is beginning to shape to my posterior and was more comfortable today - or is that my imagination?  The upright position and wider bars fit me like a glove and event the slight seat hump is positioned far enough back for my legs not to cramp where I want to place my feet.  Don't want to tempt fate, but I think this could prove to be a good mile-muncher of a scooter.

Although the view behind was better in the leather jacket, the sleeves being more tight fitting, it's still not acceptable to me and so I will be shopping for extenders soon.  I see Oxford do some for about £30 which look like quality items.  (https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/662065)

Finally, for now, I know some of you guys love your aftermarket screens and I was pleased to see that some are already available for the DTX in various sizes from the likes of Ermax and Pyramid Plastics.  Will I get one?  Er, no.  I like the look of it just as it is and the little bit of wind deflection it achieves at an indicated 60 mph suits me just fine.  Anything bigger would, to my eyes, spoil the lines of the scooter.

Never had too much of an issue with the X-Town TBH Art, but, if anything, yes the DTX is a better fit for me at 5' 11" (1.80m) as I always felt the seat hump on the XT could've done with being an inch or two further back.

+1> report!

Nice dash! A good looking dash is nice to come out to when you fire up at 0/dark:30, it's just you and your gauges....and squirrels.
Soccer moms are still in bed, drunks are smoking heaps in the ditches.

Agree about the screens. I like a bit of wind in my mug - the wind-chill at 36°F lets me know I'm on a bike!

Thanks Dean. So far, so good.

I’ve only managed a couple of 25 mile rides this week owing to poor weather and domestic demands, but I’m getting close to being run in so that concern should be behind me this week.  Then the next item will be first service time. At which point I think. I need to get the heated grips I forgot to specify before collecting it 😖

Does the manual mention procedures for breaking in the engine?
Max revs, then increasing, varying engine speeds?
The max revs on the Burgman would get you run over! We all complained!

I’ll check the manual Stig. I’m going by what the salesman said, for the first 300 kms don’t exceed 50 mph and don’t labour the engine at constant rpm. I’ve done just over 200 miles now so I’ve seen the odd 60+ mph now during overtakes and I’m not stressing over it. As another scooter owner commented, how can you over rev a CVT anyway?

Talking about overtakes, feels considerably safer than the X-Town as the midrange acceleration is noticeably better on the DTX.

Nice looking bike Neil.  Congrats.

Thanks.  Just approaching the first service.  Couple of minor issues with my new DTX320 have surfaced.  On riding it today, both the Engine Management Light & the ABS orange lights remained lit; also, the TCS light comes and goes from green to orange where it should be off once you ride off?

Unrelated, but another matter concerns the engine surging at low, almost tick over speeds.  May be FI related?  It’s unnoticeable at speed, but, makes low speed maneuvering very troublesome!

I’m within 100 miles of it being due for its first service so I've asked the shop to book it in and check these issues at the same time as the service.  I'll keep you all posted.

Update:  Just rang the shop and they've volunteered to come and collect the scooter to save me hanging around while they look at it!  Now that's what I call after sales service!

Hope the shop is able to get you all fixed up and back to scootering! Let us know the diagnosis.

Will do Hawk, fortunately the scooter is still ride-able so not prevented from scootering at the moment I'm glad to say!

OK, bit of an update also posted on the DT300 sub head. DTX360 went in for 1st service yesterday and this morning (at 07:30 hrs!) I received this:

“ Good morning, Ref your bike , the electrical system has been over charging, we have been in discussions with kymco technical, new control units have been dispatched as quickly as possible, new dashboard has also been ordered but is a non stock item but this will not affect you using the vehicle , I will update you on parts delivery as soon as we know , Workshop , Richardsons of Congleton”

Checked and they’ve confirmed that once the controls are fitted I can ride the scooter while we wait delivery of the new dashboard.

I’ll keep you posted.

Further Update:  Following text received at 10 am today (4 days after scoot collected)  "Bike completed incl dash board we can deliver today or tomorrow whichever is convenient , Richardsons of Congleton . Only cost is first service lubricants and filters £80"

I've asked for it to be delivered today!  Happy days!

Just back from a quick 20 mile shakedown ride and delighted to say the DTX360 is now performing faultlessly again!  Thanks to all at the Workshop for  getting it back to normal.  I'd missed riding it so it really is appreciated.

Further reports as and when I have something of note to add.

Yes good to hear. The local dealer treats me fairly. Just bought a helmet for the same price as on-line, and could try it on for fit and no waiting for delivery and worry about the package being lifted off the front porch.

You’re right guys, I always reckon if you’re quick to complain when things go wrong, you should be twice as quick to acknowledge excellent service when you get it. The guys did good and I’m happy to tell all and sundry 😀

Above From OP.  I've had the Oxford mirror extenders on my garage shelf for a month plus now so I decided to fit 'em this morning.  Not used in anger yet, but sitting on in the garage they look to be as effective as the ones that I fitted on my X-Town and they worked.  These also look a bit better aesthetically and after a bit of fiddling accepted the OEM rubber cuffs at the base of the stem.  Test ride later so if there are any issues* I'll post back here.

* Edit:  First ride reveals a slightly raised level of vibration on the mirror image, but this is not so apparent as to outweigh the benefits of a vastly improved field of vision.  So, money well spent.

That looks nearly stock, with the knees and elbows of the original set-up.
Getting the mirrors right is critical to a guy like me.....poking along at 35mph.
Good job!

Too right Stig!  At whatever speed, a good rearward view is essential for safe riding.

I’ve spent too long making do by shifting my shoulders to get a decent view behind so it’ll be good not to have to undertake those contortions 😂

The other morning, I was thinking again how easy it is to keep track of traffic when riding in the dark ....because of their headlights. Can't remember the last time I was taken unawares when riding in the dark.

Cars in the dark? = easy….gravel, oil, sand, pot holes, rodents in the dark? = not so easy!

At the risk of upsetting the Mods, "Taken unawares from behind in the dark"?  You could be talking about something else entirely...

Another first impression.  For the first time since getting the DTX, I was out on it last night after dark and I was mightily impressed with the power and spread of the headlamps both on dip and on main beam!  Easily the best of any scooter I have owned and I can't, off hand, think of a motorcycle I've owned with a better nighttime front beam.  Hats off to Kymco.

Agreed. How Yamaha got the 2017 XMax so wrong in this important aspect, I'll never understand so it's nice to have my faith restored in scooter lights by Kymco.

.... post-kidnapper....

The twin halogens in my Burgman 400 were superb headlights! (they were twin DRL's as well!...and, at nearly 500lbs,  it had the plushest ride!)

My Liberty with it's 55/60W single halogen bulb proved to me how good a headlight can be when properly designed!

Some rarely ride at night.

Since 2013 each of my rides starts in the dark! (2,3,4 times a week - year around, incl. Ohio winters)....

Even though my top speed in the dark is never more than 35mph (unless I've chosen the State Rt at 55mph) lighting is still a big deal with me.
Sometimes I'm passed out in the country by a fellow on a large sport bike. He is flying in the dark! and I worry about him here in deer country!

I would never out run my headlights unless I was on an limited access interstate highway, and I only did that on my Forza and Burgman.
