Title: have you ever bought used tires?
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on May 14, 2023, 04:35:37 PM
I was stopped at a light the other day - right next to a large used tire shop.
I started thinking about all those who get excited if their dealer parts guy tries to sell them a new scooter or motorcycle tire with a date stamp 2 yrs old!
Twice in my life I have needed to buy a used tire for my cars. One time I had to replace one GoodYear bias ply tire by buying a set of used radials! GoodYear no longer sold a bias ply tire in my size! (an old 6 cyl Volare' inherited from my late grandfather for $1, paid to his probate lawyer)

Have a friend who would go to a used tire dealer and sort through the piles of tires and buy sets for his Honda CRV.  He never had problems with them and never did look at the age stamped on the tires.
Personally I never considered buying used tires.

yes, a couple times, a guy not far from me works for a tire shop, they let him have the take-offs if he wants em. he has a tire machine in his garage. I buy vehicles with high mileage, sometimes a tire will get one more annual inspection. I've never bought a set. I've also bought used tires so that I have a full size spare

When it comes to your safty on the road you need good tires. Cheaping out on tires is no laughing matter.

the guy I talked about in my last post, only brings home take-offs that are 50% or more tread life left, he says where he works, it's surprising the number of people who buy new tires twice a year with the change of seasons

For a couple cars when I was on a budget.  Yup.  More than a few times.
For a bike.  No.

You're correct. Tires are important safety items.
Respectfully - when was the last time you saw or knew someone that had a tire which failed?

15 yrs ago - I had a wheel come loose on my work truck. It was ready to head out into a corn field. But the tire would have been fine, out there.
Mechanics didn't torque the lug nuts.

I had one of my front wheels come loose on a vw bug I had, bugs actually balance pretty good on 3wheels, luckily the hub cap was on, it trapped the lug bolts, I was able to put the wheel back on, and put a few more foot pounds on the lug wrench, I can only blame myself for the lug bolts getting loose

Interesting....
Back story on my little adventure.
My county crew-cab, 8' bed,  work truck was stolen.
Police found it...was missing the cool full chrome hubcaps the county garage guys put on it a year before.
When that left front wheel's lug nut began to shimmy off on Rt. 68, half hour after same mechanics changed my flat tire....I stopped and checked all around. Pulled and kicked all the tires,, etc.
Was about to get back in driving when I noticed all 6 nuts were at the ends of the studs!! Ready to drop off and send me into oncoming semis!
If those hubcaps had still been there.....covering the nuts...!!
Couple of teen joyriders saved my bacon!

the old beetles didn't have studs & lug nuts, they had lug bolts, common on German cars, the BMW 320i & 325e I had, had lug bolts as well, so it's not like a nut falling off, it''s like the stud backing out

That's right.
My first car was a 69 bus, next a new 71 beetle.  Then a 73 super with the curved windshield.
Jettas, Rabbits and Vanagons after that.

I've used secondhand tyres on the car and the bikes. It's just what the budget dictates, which I'm uncomfortable with, but hey, that's the cost of living sometimes.

Back in the days when I was trying to support a family on a teacher's salary I'd go to Pick-A-Part and find wheels with tires that fit my cars. Sometimes a wrecked car had almost new tires on it and they were a bargain considering they were already mounted, balanced and holding air. The price was the same no matter the condition so bargains were possible.

Had a good friend that lifted a tire out of a dumpster that looked brand new.  Later he told me he about broke his tire irons trying to mount it. Then noted it was an 18 inch tire that just would not go on his 19 inch rim.
