Don't know how popular these are in the States, but in Europe they sell quite well - If you look at the red Vespa, I'm talking about this sort of thing.
I've been looking for one for my DTX360* for a while now, but owing to the price (Shad/Givi ask around £60-80) I've not, as you guys like to say, pulled the trigger as yet. Then the other day I spotted an Oxford fabric cabin luggage bag which looked the right sort of size and would certainly double as carry on luggage if we ever fly again! So for a few coppers over £10 I decided to splash out. Turns out it fits perfectly in my 37L top box with the added benefit of doubling as a tunnel bag whenever I need the extra room.
* It's quite a narrow gap so standard bags wouldn't fit. Would use instead of a rucksack for groceries over spill.

I know plenty of scooter riders over here in the States who use a tunnel bag. I had one that was special made for my first Burgman 650 back in 2006. I used a 20L dry bag in my 2013 Burgman 650. I WAS using that same dry bag on my AK but decided I could pack that on the back and retain the benefit of the step over that I so need to have.

You're right about the step through ease of mounting aspect Bob. Another benefit to the bag I've pictured is that I can get on the bike and then lower it into position if I'm happy to secure it with just my legs. At other times a short bungee strap from under the seat hooks onto the shoulder strap rings to secure it.

Have to put my 2€cents worth of wisdom to this subject.
Here in Italy we do have a nordern company with Yellow Blue signs which is producing very reasonable and inexpensive "tunnel bags" for us.
It holds up to six sixpacks, two boxes of cornflakes or two sixpack cartons of red/ white wine (local of course).
And the good thing is, after this " tunnel bag" is demaged, forementioned company takes them free of charge back and recycles.
That's the deal.

Haha Ruffus! If only I had a bag hook on my DTX360...
