Title: I plugged my tire
Post by: wymple on August 16, 2024, 04:22:20 AM
I picked up the sharp end of a nail, and not in the mood to remove everything, I just plugged it. I'm sure it's OK, as I've done it before when on the road & not had it come back & bite me.  Rear tire.  Anybody ever have an issue with a plug on a bike tire? I have a bottle of Slime I'm considering putting some of that in for extra peace of mind.  It's pretty much a full tread tire & the hole was thru the thickest part.

I’ve ridden 000’s of miles with a rear plug in situ, ignoring* the recommended 50mph limit, with absolutely no issues. Save your slime!

* on one notable occasion at triple-digit speeds to make a Channel ferry sailing time! Don’t try this at home kids.

No prob at all to plug a still good-profiled tire with such an emergency kit.
As long the puncture is round and not oblong, it works pretty well.

This demage on the pic did NOT keep pressure over a two week period and had to be treated by a professional tireshop who put a mushroom from inside to cover the small rupture. Now alls fine.

There are for sure more suitable means of repair, as mushroom shaped plugs, plugs inserted by a kind of gun, etc. But this kind of repair mostly ask for removing the wheel, which is sometimes not possible and/or costly.
I did not have real success with liquids within tires, just messed the whole thing up.

I've plugged a rear tire before with lots of tread remaining. Had no issues with it holding air for the next 6000+ miles until the wear bars were even with the tread. As long as it was a nail that made a clean entry and not a coarse threaded screw you should be fine. I've had a coarse screw go in once and the screw threads cut/shredded the belts in the tire. Only replacement solved that one. A nail is relatively smooth and actually slips between the strands of the belts somewhat making plugging work well.

I have always used cheap rope plugs, I have discovered that new tires are nail magnets, if I'm gonna pick up a nail, it's within the first  500 miles

here's what Ryan F9 says about plugs
