Title: Saturdays Trip in Northern Italy
Post by: Ruffus on December 14, 2024, 04:53:28 PM
Would like NOT to take you for a ride but take to the historical now Village and former roman empire City of AQUILEIA in northern Italy, which I visited this afternoon.
This roman city was one of the most important places (in the northern part) during the roman reign and had a river harbour connected by canals with the sea,  important for both civilian and military use.
Red arrow indicates a public loo (several), while where the green arrow (gravelpath) is located at, was the harbour basin (RH the river NATISSA/ waterway).

Thanks for shareing !
This reminds my of a work related trip to Bologna, Italy way back during 2003. We actually went to visit an annual agricultural fair at the city. I like history and during the evenings I was walking the streets while the other members of our group were taking a break in the hotel rooms.
Bologna has ruins of buildings dating back to the 12th or 13th century.
I can remember the friendly Italian people very well. Qute a number of them could not speak English and when they could not understand my questions about the ruines they immediately started looking to find a fellow citizen to answer my questions.

I also discovered that there are lots and lots of students in Bologna. Many of them were commuting on scooters. I've talked to some students and I could sence their exitement about their way of commuting. It was amazing to see so many people on scooters !

After our visit to the fair at Bologna we went for a visit to Venice by train. Those trains are super fast ! And of cause - Venice was an absolute amazing experience . The buildings, history, and scenery was absolutely mind blowing ...
Again, during the evenings I was still walking the streets of Venice to absorb the atmosphere while the rest of the group were taking a break in their hotel rooms !

At the time I was dreaming of taking my wife for a visit to Venice somewhere in future. Unfortunately this has not happened so far and I am not sure whether this will ever happen.
Life is short and there are lots of places we want to visit in the US !

Lovely images Rufus - reminds me of a trip around Pompeii some years ago.  What an experience!  From there we went to Sicily, then onto Malta to see relatives.  Great tour.

Txs alot all!
The biggest benefit here, except living quasi in a museum, is not having snow or ice on the roads and temperaratures never under 0°C.
The sea is taking care of that. So its all year long scooter season.

Having seen latest news from 23 USA states  under tornados and snow, hope all of you are well, clears up soon and noone is hurt.

Thank you for your photos Ruffus~!
Always a welcome feature here!
Were you on a scooter while visiting any of these places?
If so - a photo of your scooter would be great, too!

Well done,
Stig

as a land surveyor,, knowing what it takes to build infrastructure with modern equipment, I have always been impressed with Roman infrastructure

@Scooterfan, Bologna is great place and famous University there, couple of month ago my niece gratuated there as a MD, wonderful laureat and ceremony.

@Stig yes, I was by scooter there but has to be left behind because archeological sites are a few square kilometers in all, this harbour just a small part of it. Alltime scooter weather here. Pics anothertime.

@randyo, we do have some stretches of roads here which are built during roman reign (2nd-3rd cent) which are NOT part of culture heritage, in usable shape and are still used. That much about quality.
