Title: Kymco Xciting 400i 2017 seat lock might be broken and can't be opened
Post by: Trauma on February 06, 2025, 03:39:45 PM
Greetings everyone,

my Kymco has had an annoying issue with the seat lock being stuck closed and almost impossible to open at times. Most of the times I had to press or even bang on the seat while unlocking it to get it open and after that it would unlock itself fine.
Long story short my battery died and I parked the scooter in the garage over winter and today decided to get the old battery out and replace it. I couldn't get the seat lock to open the seat no matter how hard I hit the seat, I even had to hit it harder than usual but nothing happened.
I was forcing the key alot and I felt that something snapped in the key lock. The key is easily rotated when ulocking it and it has almost no resistance when turning it now, almost like the cable snapped. The lock was alright it seems, rotates fully into every position, but when trying to open the seat cover there is almost no resistance like before, it just rotates and returns to normal.
I need help with opening the seat however I can so I can put the battery at least, and I also need help with identifying the actual problem with the lock and what broke.

Thank you everyone in advance.

@Trauma welcome here in this hive!
Nasty thing but easy to solve.

First is to understand that your seatlocks (two) on your XC 400 are activated mechanically and not via magnet switches like in some other scoots.
You turn your physical key left and the locks should open.

Now they don't because of misalignment of latches or smtg else.

-Pls take off your scoots front, inclusive headlights and indicator sets. Windscreen off too.
-locate the ignition switch
-there are a bunch of colored cables AND steelcables coming out in a sheath
-pull on that sheat(s) and find out whether the cable is broken or the latch stuck
-either way have somebody who is pressing the seat down while you pull on STEELCABELS and or sheats
-take long needlenose pliers to do that
Good luck and come back here for Qs.

I got tired of my seat locks on my 500 sticking on me so I took the offending side off. Later I took the other one off because I flat out don't need them.

@Vyacheslav welcome here!
To replace your ignition lock/switch:

-get a new one
-please read upper advise to Trauma
-there is no easy way to change this lock
-front has to be removed
-if you have your new assy in your hands you will have the upper (ring) part and the lower (lock and electrical) part
-under your scoots front it will be necessary to use plumber pliers, chisel, screwdriver and even a Dremel tool to remove the old one.
-pay close attention how to wire/ rewire the seat and fueltank release cables
-take the parking brake rubber grummet out to have better access and light
-count approximately five hours to fix this task, doing first time.
