Title: my approx average riding speed in the dark, wet or dry
Post by: Stig / Major Tom on February 27, 2025, 10:11:13 PM
28 t0 33 mph.

I think I'm riding mostly 50>55mph rural roads - but there is very little traffic an hour or two before sunrise.
If someone comes along - I know the safe passing areas (for both of us) and I wave them by.
Just me, the deer and raccoons...
We tolerate each other.
With ear-plugs, very relaxing.

I probably average 45-50 on 35mph posted roads mostly, but when I do hit 65-70 posted highways, 60-65 is my speed, doesn't matter which bike, AK550-K-Pipe-VStrom

My speeds vary a heck of a lot with the variety of roads I ride. Average? Probably 45-ish. Top speeds rarely above 65, that’s all I need to enjoy the twisties around here.

Stig - I always worry about you out on 55mph rural highways only doing 30 mph! Around here I think I'd get run over or killed. Stay safe out there.

Thanks for your concern, Hawk!
There is a straight shot down a 55mph state route to my coffee - and there are times I've been forced to use that road.

When something forces me to ride that state route, I'm not happy - but I ride accordingly....which is damnear WOT on my two small scoots. >:(

Actual speed required for safe travel and road surfaces are my major concerns for each of my pre-dawn rides.
At an hour or two before sunrise - I can even slip across and out of my city while seeing very few cars.

I've done a lot to improve my rear lighting - next to nothing to improve my headlights. At 35mph in the dark & rain on very well-known roads, even the 35W LIKE200i headlight seems sufficient.

"He rides the same roads over and over?!"
After 6 kids, 54 yrs of marriage and a war - it's not that I've had all the excitement I require, but .......
Whatever. :)

Like most of us on here Stig, you have nothing left to prove and if riding familiar roads on the coffee run works for you, then go for it!  Most of my grocery runs are the same route and that's fine.  When it's a "for the heck of it" ride, then I do like to seek out little used roads and enjoy the newness of fresh challenges - I like to think it keeps the skills honed.

not sure whether by design or luck, most of my riding is on zero, or near zero traffic. Living in a rural area is part of it, not riding during commuting hours another part. When I do encounter traffic, it's almost always in the opposite direction.

as I posted earlier 45-50 I drive a little slower in my truck, maybe 40, my UTV with its short narrow wheel base, it can go 48, but above 35 can be sketchy. Interstate highways are a rarity,  Class 1 state highways as well, Class II more, but primarily Class V town roads unless otherwise posted, 35mph limit

yes, I am anarchistic in relation to speed limits and yellow lines
