Title: Larger windshield for my Kymco 500 xciting
Post by: scooter65 on May 03, 2011, 01:05:09 AM
Just joined up on the Kymco Forum today so just trying it out.  I live in the So. Cal area and just bought a 2009 500cc xciting with the small smoke colored windshield.  Nice looking but does nothing for wind diversion!  I have seen on line the Givi D293ST but it is 35" tall... looks way too big.  I want to block the wind but don't want the windshield way above eye level.  Any ideas??

YOu could get a '07 or earlier Kymco original windshield. Not sure if they're still available but ask dealer or call or email Kymco USA cust.service.  I find it just about right for my kind of riding, which is just sportin' around.  ;)  Keep in mind you can mount the windshield in either of two different positions.  I like the lower postion because I can see the road over the top of it but can still duck down behind it when I want to.  It is clear -- not smoked.  It does have an anti-glare coating of which some of mine is starting to peel off but still looks good.

Edit to add:  And don't presume you can mount the GIVI in either position cause the hand extensions might not fall in the right place.

I don't think the windscreens are interchangeable between the old and the new xciting (the one
with led lights up front etc, if you guys get that one at all).

Yes, I think you're right there, Cortez.  This fellow's '09 should be the same as earlier models though.  Are the new Xcitings with the new style farings even in the USA yet?

There's 2 different Ri's .. but I don't think the new redesigned Xciting is sold in USA yet, so it might be
ok.

I have a Givi tall windshield on my 09 X500Ri.  Fits OK, but when turning hard when parking etc the handlebar mounted mirrors hit the windshield.  Not a real problem while riding, just parking or backing and turning short.  I put a set of risers on the bars that moved them back two inches and up an inch and that solved two problems.  Now mirrors do not hit and I can ride upright and do not have to lean forward to reach the bars (short arms).  Made the ride more comfy.

Any pictures?
BTW; in your sig line, is the S500 the Atlantic Sprint 500?
If it is, I'd love to hear about the Xciting VS Atlantic!  :)

Thanks!

I just installed a Givi D293ST on my 09 Xciting 500ri.  I looked at several options and had concerns about it being too tall.  This installation required a little work with a Dremel tool for one side, but was fairly straight forward.  I found that the results were much better than expected.  My mirrors do not bump the windshield, even when the handlebars are fully turned. Highway riding is 100% better.  Much quieter with no buffeting.  I have been very happy with the GIVI.

I am looking for a used OEM windshield.  If you have upgraded to the Givi and still have the OEM piece, please let me know!

grouchysmurf  - I have your '09 OEM windshield off my (then) new 500 Ri.  Used less than 50 miles.  Make me an offer.  I'm in PA.  Just joined the forum myself.  Love my scoot - HATE the seat.  4,000 miles my first year.  Rear tire is GONE!  Buying a Michelin Sport for a $30 premium from my local shop, cause I'm riding on Brillo (without the soap)!

About that seat, yeah, one of the first mods I did was having a custom seat make on both my original 07 which was replaced with an 09 Ri.

Thank you, but I have already purchased one!

Did you cut off the ends of the slider bars and add a couple of new notches to get the seat back pad to go back further?  I got about 3/4 inch more room for just a few minutes work with a dremel.  Cut the sliders off just in front of the threads for the locking screw, taper them, then cut your new stop grooves.  I put painters tape on my seat and the pad to show where I started - then pushed it on ad far as I was comfortable to see how far to make the new notch from the last one.  That little bit made a big improvement.

Hey Tim - how tall are you?  I'm 6'3" and would like to get a quieter ride.  I thought about cutting down the stock 500Ri windshield to get the blast away from my helmet level - but even removing it completely didn't help (I also tried using a foam wedge to change it's angle).

How much did your mpg drop after mounting the larger screen?

If you're that tall, your MPGs might even improve with bigger screen.
