Hi gents - newbie here. Just bought my Kymco - still in warranty
- and guess what: as soon as I brought it home it did not start. :-[
PO said he left it with just a little gas over the winter - but was able to start it for demo
I assume its the carb got gummed up - so I will try to take off carb to clean.
Any ideas?
On the modding topic:
The scooter is all stock - but cdi seems un- restricted.
I got my hands on Leo Vince gp exhaust and would like to exchange it with stock.
What other steps are required to take full advantage of the pipe?
Really appreciate any help on both topics.
Thanks guys.
Robert.

That pipes a great start! I just got started on my super 8 too. From what I've read/heard/seen other than the actual restrictions getting that air a flowin has the biggest impact on top and bottom performance. The stock jet is 72 but most come with a restricted ?tiny#? jet. Look around on here to see what's working with your exhaust. Seems like most are in the 82-84 or 90-92 range. If they didn't derestrict at the shop then you'll have to throw the smooth boss on too.
I'm doing same exhaust and tryin an 84 jet. Sense I'll be in there already I'm gonna go ahead and throw in a molassi variator/rollers along with the smooth boss and new spring. As far as I can tell that's a good place to stop and get all that dialed. Check out a stage one kit from provo or scooter hospital.
Anyone know any other good parts places?
Have good scootin!

The stock jet is a #82 so go up from there. The restricted jet that comes in the US mode is a #72. I run a #91 jet with a drilled out air box with no issues.
-
Great - thanks guys for the response.
Also - stock exhaust comes with this tube connected to reed valve to suck some fresh air in for unburned fuels re-circulation - I assume that goes as well?
As for the intake - should i stick with standard air box or a cone filter - which seem like a cheap upgrade (around $10-$15)?
What is the size of the filter to use as well as the tube that attaches it to the carb?

Pimpy1, wordslinger - Help!!!
A bit of a good news: Mounted Leo Vince GP, #90 jet and removed rubber insert from Air Box(Waiting for K&N style filter from Scooter assassins)
And WHOA - different machine altogether - hills where I dragged at 12-15mph - I am blowing through @ 32mph and 45mph flats- and thats with the restricted clutch - which I am about to change.
If before I was kind of bogged down that I did not go for SR50 - now I know I made right decision.
Well that's for the good news:
Today in the morning - it just would not start at all - I spent 10 mins trying to start it - nothing...
I opened crab drain bolt and and gas came out - so I know it gets to carb. - Am I running rich? should have waited for that new Air filter? (PS - I am running Iridium plug)
Guys - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Rober.

Is the battery dead? That scoot will not even kickstart with a dead battery.
-
Battery is perfect - I got it started - by restricting air flow to intake....so I assume I am running lean on the low jet??? - any way to adjust it. There is no low jet mixture screw on our Carburetor.
P.S. Thanks for answering.
-
Guys - do we need a mixture screw? And how do we make it happen?
-
There is not one on that little carb. need new carb for better fine tuning. Sorry.
-
Actually according to Complex - in his post and with PM to me - he reiterated that there is a screw hiding behind that copper plug - which does not have a slot to turn it with a screw driver.
However you can make that slot with hex saw once you open up that copper cap. Though in my opinion Dremel would do the trick.
Just as a curiosity - which aftermarket carb would better fit our Kymco? - and how would we benefit? - Something that would work for original 50cc and 70cc bbk?

Its the hidden Idle screw I had the same experience I had to restrict air flow to get it started Once I did the stock carb mod it started and idled each time. If I leave it for several days it does take longer to start but otherwise perfect. Here is a post I just left for someone else:
"I have a 2012 Super 8 2T. 27 MPH out of the crate. I let it get 99 miles on the clock, did a lot of homework and luckily got it right after some minor wasted efforts. Stop wasting your time and get the Malossi 70CC kit. It needs this modification to get the power and speed. It was easy to put in, about 1 hr. I increased my main jet to a #95 and put a high volume air filter/boot. I also used an EBay $30.00 racing variator and smooth bushing. I now get 40 MPH easy and have had it up to 54 MPH tucked on the expressway. I did have to pop the protective blank Idle Jet Cap and adjust it to have it start easily and idle. That's it! See my other Super 8 posts for carb mod pics. The speed mainly came from the Malossi and stock carb mod
My son uses it daily for school and loves it. 600 miles on it so far"

Thanks Complex.
I do get it to 45 pretty easy with 49cc - with lots of power throughout the acceleration range - I will keep it as is for now - unless there is a great deal on Malossi kit - which should be over the winter. just for that before storing I will pop the engine with rear wheel off - and leave it in my project room.
I tried adjusting the high jet using free-wheeling technique described here: http://scooter.wikia.com/wiki/Tuning_a_carburetor (http://scooter.wikia.com/wiki/Tuning_a_carburetor)
Loud as hell - not sure I was successful - however after adjustment I started getting this annoying Resonance sound above 30mph. - anyone know what it is? Maybe its the issue with Reed valves?
Thanks,
Rober.
-
Some issue when I removed the airbox restriction; bike would not start cold. Ive put it back in till I get the proper idle jet
-
What jet size would be proper? and do you really need it if you do idle mix screw mod?
-

Thanks,

I am getting a fairly loud cavitation type sound on my Super 8 2t and a bit of vibration around 35 and up. I have yet to find the issue.
-
Try the carb mod and see what happens. As for the idle jet, get the next size up or next size and 2 sizes up. Nice thing is if you have the "proper" idle jet you will have a little bit more room for tuning should you do other mods etc.
As for the resonance check out http://www.amrca.com/tech/tuners.pdf (http://www.amrca.com/tech/tuners.pdf)
search within the doc "resonance" "resonant" Page 92 is where the good stuff starts. Maybe that's it?
-
Wow - that's an amazing handbook - what an in depth analysis.
That being said - it offers an explanation for the resonance effect - but not a solution.
I am going to try to wrap the pipe from cylinder to the beginning of expansion cylinder with pipe wrap - see if it fixes it.
Which idle jet to get? is this the right jet type below?

Complex,
What are the steps for your idle screw mod? Ive done some searching but cant find anything on the forum.
Also, does your super8 run the PB16 carb or another?
Thanks

Ok - bit of an update:
1. Installed de-restricted Clutch:
http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/qmb139-clutch.html (http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/qmb139-clutch.html)
Comes with much stiffer spring then our Kymco - not sure what performance impact it will have
2. Installed Scooter Assassins Blue (K&N style) air filter with plastic cover
- Bit of an issue with that: - its efing LOUD - I am actually planning to drill out original, and put it back.
3. Installed #100 jet from #90
4. Tried to install #42 Idle jet to solve the cold starting issue - but the thread turns out too big - does anyone know which size idle jet we need exactly?
Here is the thing - I still can hit 45mph on flat - BUT i lost this instant acceleration across the whole range I was so happy with - any ideas guys?
-
Well guys - I modded my Super 8 so much.....it turned into Aprilia SR50 Factory.....;-)
Got the 2013 model so cheap could not pass it...
After calculating how much my kymco would cost to get to the point i want it,
it actually came up more then Aprilia would cost new - and still Aprilia is a better bike - injection/dual disks/amazing cluster panel/self adjusting ecu/halogen lights/glove box/ better suspension/more comfortable seat.
It also happens to also top out @ 55mph with just standard de-restriction......
Soooooo.....will be putting my 2012 kymco on craigslist soon...seems I was tinkering with it more then riding...
