I use Castrol 4T 10W-40 Motorcycle Oil in my 2005 250cc Grandvista. The scooter runs like a watch now, consistently and evenly at low speed and RPM. Acceleration is better, quicker. It just runs better! Castrol is half the price of the Mobil 1 4T motorcycle oil. It cost $1 more than regular car oil. Commonly available.

I also noticed that the bolt holding the muffler on is missing. It must have vibrated loose. Where the big chrome part 8" diameter part connects to the 2" tube is a screw missing. I would sure to know the what the length and thread of that missing bolt was. The scooter runs much slower and the throttle is unresponsive and sloppy now. Any help would be appreciated.

Grandvista 250 / 2005 Grandvista stalls out.
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:45:50 AM »
I rode my 2005 Grandvista fast and hard (up to 75 mph) for 150 miles today. Coming home I had problems: whenever I stopped for a red light or stop sign the engine simply died. But it would always restart. When I got home, I let the engine cool down and the problem disappeared. I used Seafoam gas treatment for the first time the previous night and also changed the oil. I thought everything would be fine...

What is the problem? I don't want to take it in for service unless I know what they should be doing to fix the problem.

Adding gear oil to the Kymco GV 250 requires a long narrow tip. The kitchen flavor injector has a 3" stainless steel needle which works well. Of course, the capacity is only 30ml which means filling and injecting 6x per oil fill. But it works well and dispenses oil rapidly. I used Mobil 1 LS Synthetic Gear Lubricant 75W-90, a thick liquid, almost a gel. It is nearly light clear yellow. The oil I removed from the scoot was a dark murky brown.

Does the Hopkins 10111/6 MFG 2-Cycle Oil-Mixing Tool have a long enough stem to reach past the obstructing parts to access the gear oil fill hole?

I have a 2005 GrandVista 250. I located the gear oil drain and fill bolts on the right rear of the bike. I removed the two 12mm bolts with a socket driver and a 4" extension (you'll need it), and drained the oil. I went to add 180ml (~3/4 cup) of oil, but the fill hole is tough to get to. But I bought a kitchen flavor injector at Walmart for <$4.00 which I used to add the oil. It's a nice tool, stainless steel and plastic, with a long needle. It disassembles completely for cleaning. Recommended! --> http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Flavor-Injector/14964956

You might want to grind 1/8" off the pointed tip for safety.

Took it to the dealer. He said I needed a new sensor. Cost $20.

There is a mode button on the instrument panel but no reset button.

There is no way, according to Kymco dealer tech support, to reset the digital instrument panel. I think I am looking at an expensive computer repair bill, unless someone has a way to clear and reset the panel. I will try replacing the battery next week.

Grandvista 250 / New battery messes up speedometer
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:42:38 AM »
I bought a 2006 GrandVista. I just replaced the battery with an Interstate battery shown here http://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_eStore/Products/RT/PID-FAYTX12(MotorCycles).aspx?dsNavigation=Ntk~SearchGroup|FAYTX12|3|,Ny~True,Ntpc~Disabled,Ns~product+Type|101|1|&Title=Cycle-Tron+Plus+-+180+CCA+-+10+AH

The problem is that the speedometer is now reading false speeds. I'm going 40 MPH by my reckoning and the speedometer reads 5-11 MPH.

Is there something special about Kymco batteries? Why doesn't this new Interstate battery work?

Grandvista 250 / Re: strange rear tire valve

Hmmmm. I will have the dealer install a proper Schrader valve. I have replaced Schrader valves in garden carts. But I don't reckon I could remove the rear wheel. It looks awfully complicated. Thank you all for your help. Much appreciated!

Grandvista 250 / strange rear tire valve
« on: April 27, 2010, 11:44:01 AM »
My front wheel has a standard schrader tire valve. But the rear wheel has some strange valve which doesn't look like a standard valve. Maybe it's some form of Asian variety of tire valve. I thought there were only two types of tire valves: Schrader and Presta for some European bicycle tires. Can anybody shed any light on this?

I found the coolant gauge H/L window. Sorry about that!

Grandvista 250 / coolant question
« on: April 25, 2010, 08:40:52 PM »
I have a 2006 Grand Vista. I removed the Engine Coolant 4" square panel from the area right of the handlebars by loosening the single screw. All I see is a plastic tank. I see no liquid in it. The red manual (pg. 39) shows a gauge H / L but I don't see that anywhere on the scooter.

How do I know if the scooter needs coolant? Do I have to remove the old coolant first? Do I just fill it to the top with distilled water?

TIA

I'm buying this 2006 Kymco GV used and I didn't see any toolkit under the seat. What is the needle-nose pliers for? What size spark plug wrench? I need a 3/8 socket driver, I suppose. Would a tubeless tire repair kit obviate the need to remove a wheel while out on the open road? What are most common repairs?

Thanks, and naturally I will cite your member number as input when I sign up for MTS in the summer. Right now the scoot is in storage until April 2010 and I only have a learner's permit.
