Technical | How To / Runnin' a touch warm...
« on: October 07, 2011, 03:53:38 AM »
Howdy, all - I hope everyone had a great and safe summer!

Question for all the gearheads out there (trust me when I say that I am NOT one of these chosen few!):  I ran all summer and, well, since March of 09 with my 09 X250 with ZERO issues.  She has 18k miles on her, now, and I do pretty much monkey maintenance to her.  By that, I mean the type of maintenance a monkey can do: change the oil, gear oil and wash her!!  ;)  I know golf and math, but engines are a foreign concept to me...  For bigger stuff, I take her to the dealer here in Phoenix, where he does everything recommended to her to keep her smooth.  Ahem, excuse me - I'll get to the point...  Sorry...  ;)

I noticed today riding in to work at 4:00 this morning, that I was running just a TOUCH warm, and again coming home this afternoon at 5:00pm.  This is mostly at 55-60mph or so, with side streets at 30-40 over about 25 total minutes.  By "warm," I mean that prior to notice, the temp guage NEVER went above 50%, but today it crept over the mark both to and from work.

Drum roll, please...

Should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance to all!

Phoenix, AZ (USA) here - kinda chilly in the mornings (30-40) but it usually warms up to 70F in the afternoons this time of year.  Layers, layers, layers, with a wind/water-proof shell is an ideal combination.  I ride the freeway (55-60 mph) back and forth from work for about 25 miles and never get cold or wet, with one exception.  The only complaint I have is the cold wind coming up underneath my facemask!  The balaklava (sp?) does wonders keeping the cold off my face/neck, but my face up around my eyes gets very cold and dry, which is not a good combination (especially wearing contact lenses) at 4:00 in the morning!  Does anyone recommend anything for this issue of mine?  Bigger windshield?  20 scarves?  Driving the car instead?   ;)

Thanks all!

PS~~Great posts in this thread and Happy New Year all!

Sweet site, but I did not have any luck finding the correct service manual.  I'll keep looking, however!

This one took me a couple days of frustration to get also - believe it or not, the oil change button and the odometer/trip button are linked!  I drove around for forever with my oil change light on also, until I decided to sit down and work on it until I figured it out...  Get yourself a golf tee or awl or a slim phillips screwdriver or something similar.  Use this to push in the oil change button and, while pushed, also push down the odo/trip button.  If I remember correctly, the number of miles since the button was last reset will display (an oil trip meter, if you will).  After holding down the odo/trip button for a couple seconds, the oil trip meter will reset to "0" and the oil change light will go out.  Again, it's all about the angle (and an incredible amount of PATIENCE)!!

Good luck!!

This one took me a couple pushes with the finger to get it to reset...  The button on the left of the panel is the one you're looking for.  It takes the correct angle to push and catch the switch; this is what took me a minute to find out.  If you are currently on ODO displayed in miles, the first click will switch you to kilos; next will be TRIP in miles; next TRIP in kilos, then back to ODO.  It will take you a couple punches to get it, but once you do, you won't have the issue again!  Once you get to the TRIP display you want to reset, press and hold the button and it will do so after a couple seconds (obviously at the correct angle to hit the switch).

Good luck!!

Fantastic, Momma!!

I love keeping up with the Big Boys, too, and can easily do so even at 75!!  Down here in the southwest, we do not get the opportunity to see much fall color (unless you are in the higher country say, Flagstaff, AZ), and I definitely miss it!  I miss the rain, too, for that matter!  Oh, by the way - just filled the tank this morning - 161.3 miles at 2.051 gallons...  I will leave it up to others to do my math for me!  ;)

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE this machine???

Excellent Post garumn. It just rocks to get that kind of gas mileage. I've been kicking around the idea of getting a 400 or 650 Burgman so I can bring a passenger for longer trips. I just have a hard time justifying a purchase of something with 45 - 55 mpg when I'm getting such great mileage.

Not that I'm cheap....just economical!

Thanks, Momma!

I can't blame you on wanting a bigger scoot for longer trips - I am seriously considering upgrading to the x500.  I doubt I will pull the trigger on that one, though (as you say, the 250 is simply WAAAAAAY too economical and FUN)...  ;)

Now to actually get some luggage for the thing...

Considering that both instruments pick up signal from the same source (mechanical or electromagnetic in newer scooters), and assuming that frictional/mechanical error of gauges themselves is the same, don`t you think that the "carry over" of error is pretty much the same for both instruments?

If speedo is 10 % optimistic, more ore less, odo will be be 10 % optimistic too.

Outstanding, sir.  Apparently my numbers are being brought into question.  Understand them or not - it does not matter to me.  "What I think" is irrevelant considering the data supplied from two different sources; the scooter itself and an accompanying GPS unit to compare against.

 ;)
The speedo certainly is optimistic (the odometer as well, but less-so) - this last Friday, I had the scoot on a 161 mile ride (odometer trip reading), all 65 mph freeway through and around Phoenix.  Trying my best, I kept the speedo at between 70 and 75 all around (excluding surface streets, of course).  At a 65 mph reading on my GPS, the speedo read 61 mph.  At 70 mph, the GPS read 64 mph, and at 75 mph, the GPS read 69 mph.  After all that, my fuel efficiency rated as follows (after filling the tank in the morning the exact same way to the exact same level I do every time I fill it and refilling upon returning the exact same way to acquire consistent data):

154.9 miles travelled via Mapquest
/ 2.11 gallons used during travel

= 73.41 mpg

What a wonderful machine this is!!

Oh, by the way, I Mapquested mileage, as my GPS does not have trip mileage, and it appears the Odometer is very close to actual - the Mapquested mileage was 154.9.

Mmmmm...  X250 GOOOOOOOOOOD!!!

Excellent mileage, performance, braking, accelerating and quality.  She can easily hold 70 mph on freeways (the tachometer is redlined, but the speedo does not redline until 80 mph).  Momma pointed out that wind gusts can play with you a bit, and I concur.  I also readily agree that leaning forward behind the windshield lessens the issue considerably (reducing your vertical profile), to a point that wind is nearly a non-issue.  This is where the 400+ lbs of the scoot is a GOOD thing!!

Just ride safely, no matter what scoot you are in!
