People GT 300i / First year of ownership
« on: November 01, 2013, 11:20:30 AM »
I live in Syracuse, NY, and the weather is changing. I have a slight heart problem and am on blood thinning meds. Unfortunately this curtails my colder weather riding greatly. I'm cleaning my scoot today to put her away till spring. I thought I would give you folks a review of my first year (2400 miles) with my GTI300.

I picked up my new (2012) Silver GTI in April. I rode her home and started changing things.

             Modifications:
                     1. Install Biondi windshield (Very easy install. Kit moved mirrors up and out for better
visibility. Perfect height for my 5' 10" frame)
                     2. Replace stock topbox with a Shad SH40 cargo (Shad is removable, and can be used
unlocked if desired. I removed the rear plastic piece and put red reflective tape under
                         it for better nighttime visibility.)
                     3. I cut small diamonds out of black and blue reflective tape and put them on scooter.
( Personalize the look and more nighttime visibility.)
                     4. Where the European turn signals were, I installed Cool white LED bulbs and wired them
in with the running lights. (Looks good and gives better visibility.)
                     5. I installed a second 12v accessory plug under the seat. (Wired directly to the battery
and fused so I can use my GPS or battery tender.)
                     6. At about 550 miles, I installed Dr Pulley 14 gr sliders (stock rollers were 15gr) and a
                         iridium spark plug.

               Maintenance:

I've changed the oil, oil filter, and gear oil 4 times so far. I use a full synthetic 10-40 in
the motor and a full synthetic 75-90 in the trans. Hiflo HF566 oil filter.

I've filled up the gas and checked mileage about 17 times so far. Mileage went from a low of
59.4 to a high of 75 depending on how I drove. I now have 2400 miles on the scoot and my
average mileage is right about 68. I use 87 octane unleaded with no problems.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase. I can putter around town at 15 mph, or cruise the
Interstate at 75. I've been on a 400 mile trip and had no problem keeping up with much bigger
(Honda Gold Wing) motorcycles. Scooter is light enough for a old guy to handle and loads of fun
to ride. I just wish the fuel tank was larger. Next year I will get a set of Michelin city grips. I am
going to replace the front 110-70/16 with a larger 120-20/16. I think this will help correct my
slightly optimistic speedometer and improve handling as a bonus.

Hope all forum members ride safe and enjoy their scooters as much as I love mine!

Technical | How To / Speedometer Error Correctible?
« on: September 10, 2013, 11:50:46 PM »
I have a 2012 GTI300. My speedometer reads about 2mph fast when checked with a GPS. Will changing the front tire from a 110/70-16 to a 120/70-16 help to correct this? I'm going to upgrade to Michelin City Grips and would like to correct the speedometer at the same time. I believe the slightly bigger diameter would help.

People GT 300i / Tires Again !
« on: September 09, 2013, 11:23:49 AM »
I have about 1500 miles on my GTI and love it. I want to change my front tire from a 110-70/16 to a 120-70/16. I think it would handle a little better and the slightly bigger diameter tire will help correct my slightly (2 mph) optimistic speedometer. I have the stock MAXXI tires on it. I can't find anyplace to buy a new MAXXI tire, or a chart to see if they make the size I want. My other option is to install 2 new Michelin City Grips. I'm 69 years old and want  real good tires for dry and wet road conditions.  Looking for advice  on this situation.

People GT 300i / Tire question
« on: July 30, 2013, 08:51:16 PM »
I've put about 1200 miles on my GT so far and love it. I've only been caught in the rain once. I have a couple of tire questions for the forum.

         1. I've only ridden once so far in the rain. I plan on riding regardless of weather (except snow) with this scooter. My GT has the stock MAXXIS tires on it. Is there a better all weather tire out there that would be worth buying. Tire life isn't a huge factor as much as wet weather handling. I don't put a lot of miles on, but I want to feel comfortable riding in the rain.

        2.  My stock front tire is a 110/70x16. If I do get new tire, I want to replace it with a 120/70x16. I think the bigger tire would improve handling and even correct the slightly (2mph) optomistic speedometer.

What do you folks think about my thoughts?

General Discussion / Better flag?
« on: July 16, 2013, 10:35:26 PM »
I put a Shad cargo 40 top box on my GTI300. I made a little holder for an American flag and mounted it on the box. It looks and works great with flags up to 12" x 18". The problem is the flags. After riding for a week or two, they start to fray and look terrible. They only cost $1.00 apiece, but I'm looking for a better quality flag that will hold up to 30 - 70 mph winds. Any suggestions?

General Discussion / Looking for riders?
« on: June 21, 2013, 10:36:06 AM »
I've been on this forum now for about a year. During that time several people have contacted me about riding. I've finally got my scoot broken in, and am ready to go. Unfortunately I somehow accidently erased all the E-mails from other local riders, therefore losing their contact info. If anyone in the central New York (Syracuse) area is interested in group rides, please contact me. I'm quite sure there was 3 or 4 interested folks out there. My e-mail is mrmikesdeuce@aol.com.

Downtown 300 / Looking for a DT300?
« on: June 11, 2013, 08:16:36 AM »
7s cycle in Leroy, NY (Rochester area) has a 2013 silver DT300 on his homepage for $5299. In January I bought a new (2012) People GT300I from this dealer for $1100 off MSRP. If you're looking, it might be worth a phone call to see if you can get a deal on this scoot.

People GT 300i / Couldn't wait
« on: May 26, 2013, 10:04:16 PM »
I was going to wait till I got 1000 miles before I changed over to sliders. I did it today at 550 instead. Stock rollers appear to be 15 gr, and I put in Dr Pulley 14 gr sliders. I installed an iridium spark plug also. Definitely feel the difference.

People GT 300i / Spark plug and sliders
« on: May 19, 2013, 04:48:14 PM »
Just passed 500 miles on my scoot and did my second oil, filter, and tranny fluid change. Ready to put in my Iridium spark plug and Dr. pulley 14g sliders. How much plastic do I have to remove to accomplish these tasks? I looked quickly and couldn't even see the spark plug.

General Discussion / Rewards card?
« on: May 04, 2013, 07:46:46 PM »
I just bought my second new Kymco scooter (2012 GTI300). Today in the mail, I got two prepaid $50.00 visa  rewards cards. Is this a legit thing from Kymco or is there a catch?

Just read Boo's post. Guess it is legit.

People GT 300i / Speedometer accurracy?
« on: May 01, 2013, 06:55:11 PM »
I now have about 300 miles on my GTI and love it. The question is. How accurate is the factory speedometer. I don't have a GPS to check mine and was wondering if anyone who has one has verified theirs? If my speedometer and odometer are correct, I got about 60mpg with my first fill up. Does this sound about right.

People GT 300i / Cover or seat cover
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:13:04 AM »
I just bought a new cover for my GTI. I bought the one for my model w/windshield. The cover fits the scooter great IF I take the topbox off. Unfortunately if I do that, I can't carry the cover to work with me. Can anyone recommend a cover to fit with both a windshield and a topbox? If not does anyone know of just a seatcover that would fit? I just want to keep my seat dry if it rains while I'm working. I would like something simple and inexpensive.

People GT 300i / Headlight replacement
« on: April 19, 2013, 09:42:52 PM »
I wired the European front turn signals as running lights. I used cool white LED bulbs. Now the running lights look great, but the factory headlight has that yellowish tint. Does anyone know of a replacement headlight bulb that will give that "whiter" look I'm looking for?

People GT 300i / 12 volt accessory plug
« on: April 18, 2013, 03:08:25 AM »
My 2012 came with a 12 volt accessory plug under the seat. Can I use this plug for a GPS, and  a battery tender. I installed my a plug on my old scooter and put a fuse in the positive line as a safeguard. Is the factory plug fused and safe to use for these accessories?
