General Discussion / Re: Left Turner Almost Got Me

Found this post in the Motorcycle safety forum, and though it related to what we've been discussing:

I chose this situation as it is one that causes a lot of crashes which I feel are planned by the rider who fails to compensate for known common errors of other drivers.

It's a fact that if we put ourselves in a position to be left-turned, our probability of being left turned will be some value for N. Say 1 in 100. (Used for an example, and not intended to be accurate.)

We can reduce our probability of being left turned by 50% just by reducing exposure 50%. I think it's possible to reduce exposure by about 90%.

What can we do to reduce exposure?

The first part of the Roadcraft system is information.

Part of the information phase is giving information. Some things one can do to increase visibility. Wear a white helmet. Wear a brightly colored vest. Use high beams. (Don't flash them as it may be taken as a "go" signal.) Auxiliary lighting. Headlight modulators. By looking well ahead, one can usually see a vehicle approaching a position to make a left turn.

Let's call this the completion of the information phase. In my opinion, the critical part of the information phase occurs 12 to 17 seconds before the hazard although it doesn't stop there.

Now on to positioning:

Often, speeding up a bit will get us through the intersection before the vehicle gets in position. Or slowing down creates a space big enough for the vehicle to obviously complete the turn before we get to the intersection. If done early enough, the speed change may only be a few mph.

If there is no hazard to the right and it's otherwise appropriate, moving to the right lane could be a choice. If already in the right lane, be aware the other driver's site line may be blocked. I try to avoid having a big space to my left that the left turner might be tempted to use. I'll either creep forward or drop back so I have a blocker in the intersection.

I haven't mentioned everything there is to know about left-turners. In fact, I've completely skipped the end game. Not that it's not important, but I didn't want to write a book.

Roadcraft is big on assignments. Find a corner where you can observe how motorcycles position themselves for left turners. Make notes on what you observe. A voice recorder is good for this. Or set up a video camera. Sometimes one has to give up riding to do these things.

Thank you ScooterWolf for this article.  Knowledge is power and this thread has been informative.

I like all the discussion on here about this, its eye opening for me and I'm sure others.  Being educated with skills is always the best.

I understand everybody's point of not using a flash at an intersection and if you are going to signal a horn may be the best option, also at slower speeds that is a good option too.  But what about traveling down roads at a higher speed, say 45+ mph, a horn is not going to be effective a lot of times at those speeds and distance.  Does anybody have a story about how something helping or hurting one way or another?

Maybe I'm just beating a dead horse.

i almost can't wait to take it back to the dealer to change out the fluids now that I'm past 500 miles.  It should be broken in good and I'm looking forward to going for a nice long Sunday scoot soon.

Definitely make sure to get the first scheduled maintenance and oil change on time.  I have the same bike and I noticed it still smoothing out quite a bit up to 1500 miles.  I took it easy till then and went easy on the throttle and didn't really open it up until after that.  I'm around 2500 miles and she is starting to purr like a kitten.

Yes, where you both are at a stop sign, a blink of the high beams means, "you go".  A flash back is, "thank you".  Always been that way here in the states.

Richard L.
That makes sense for the above and I've probably done it myself.  I guess I'm more wondering if when you are cruising down the road and you see somebody wanting to take a left in front of you or somebody on the right getting ready to pull out and you think that they may not see you or aren't judging your speed you are approaching them at properly, is it a good idea to give a quick flash?  More of an informal poll and peoples thoughts on this.

They aren't on in your pictures are they?   Mine are brighter than stock.  I wonder if it is because you are using the same power tap for the blue driving lights?

I am using that power tap.  I didn't notice any difference when I had the stock bulbs in as far as brightness goes but when I replaced them with the LED's they were dimmer.  What power tap are you using?

Too many inappropriate comments to make about giving your wife a snake as a present (insert jokes here).  But hey if it makes the wifey happy then get her whatever she wants.  ;D

My worries with the flasher is that it may give someone the idea that you're telling them to pull out in front of you, unless you use the horn together without slowing down. Anyway, I've always been afraid to use it as it may give mixed signals to a rider.

I haven't heard of this unspoken rule before.  Has anybody else heard of this?  If this is some big "rule" I'm violating, please let me know before I kill myself.  :-[

I installed a set of led amber lights up front since I'm running the Magic Blinkers up front and wanted to cut down on the power used.  I purchased them from http://superlumination.com/1156_1157.htm model 7507 PY21W Tower European Bulbs, 7507 Bau15s Single Circuit.  This site was a recommendation from UrBestFriend.  I was a little disappointed that they were not as bright as the stock incandescent bulbs but for night time they are more than adequate.  I would say they are 25-33% less brightness then stock.  The upside is that they draw very little power.  I just ordered Magic Blinkers for my rear lights and think I'll switch those out to LED and put the stock bulbs in the front again.

I probably average 58-60 consistently.  My commuting consists of 9 miles with 13 potential lights in the city and 9 miles of only a couple of potential stops with long 50 mph zones.  I ride with an average to heavy hand.  I did get 64 mpg on my last tank and that was from a long trip, 150 round trip, on the freeway with the RPM's around 7000-8000.

B.T.W., I discovered the bikes RPM's handle speeds of 60-65 comfortably (gps confirmed not speedometer).  I could push it into the low 70's but wasn't comfortable with running the RPM's that high for long.

Thanks UBF. Quite impressive!  What are you using in the back for the cylinder reflector?  Also I love the chrome you have on it.  Keep the pics and ideas rolling in, I use you for inspiration all the time.

P.S.  Please tell me you have the outfit and helmet that have a "police" look to them!

I'm a horn and passing flasher person also.  I'm always on the lookout for someone to pullout in front of me.  Anytime I see a potential I cover my horn and passing flasher.  I use the flasher the most and will often times give a couple of quick flashes of the high beams to alert someone of my presence.  I know it has saved me several times for people who either didn't see me or were miss judging the distance I was at and thinking they had more time to pull out then the did.

I'm a sucker for for lighting  :P  I wonder what the quality of the leathers are.  The website is horrible about explaining the product further.  I like the idea though  ;D

(sorry for the messy post, still trying to figure out all the tricks to posting quotes and stuff)

Hi-Vis jacket, Silver helmet, turned my signal lights into running lights to give me more of a profile, upgraded my horn to a louder and more effective one and added some reflective tape to my helmet.

I also just use my low beams at all times so that I have the option of using my flasher passing signal switch to do a couple of quick flashes of my high beam to people who I think may not see me and pull out in front of me.
