Did you also derestrict the variator ? Otherwise it might be your engine topping out at a dangerously high RPM...

Engine chokes after a few miles and will run again after some waiting ?
Sounds to me like you have a clogged fuel filter, or an airtight fueltank/cap (there should be a tiny way somewhere for air to enter when fuel leaves the tank...)
