thanks I will give it a shot w/o replacing the gasket and cross fingers, its a composite gasket with steel ring by cylinders

haven't ordered the cam yet, trying lighter rollers first, then placing order, probably getting cdi without rev limit too. yesterday i drilled out the air box and exhaust and it was way lean even with 95 jet, and mixture screw is now about 3.5 turns out may need a new pilot jet. installed a 105 main and its better but rpms are down.

its averaging about 7000 from 0-30 mph with 6.5g rollers, think the mods shifted the power band up in rpm, have 5g weights on order to get the revs up

i figure since the a9 is a top end cam and power band seems to be up already, the light rollers will get me a better boost

part of the reason i ask about the gasket is i can't find a 72cc head gasket by itself, just stock size or as a part of a full gasket kit or bbk so hope it seals well

Agility 50 / dumb question about cams
« on: July 18, 2013, 05:21:40 PM »
looking at an A9 cam.

the thing is, the nuts that hold down the cam also hold down the head and cylinder so i will take the tension off the head gasket too.

so my question is, do I need to change the head gasket if I change the cam?

ouch

sure it can be fixed, new engine case , some gaskets a new set of bearings and a free weekend and you're back on the road

a good time to throw in a stroker crank

what im learning is working on scoots is pretty easy, its cheap and it takes a lot less time than cars

General Discussion / parking etiquette
« on: July 16, 2013, 07:47:59 PM »
today i parked in a big parking lot, right up front was a spot with a motorcycle in it, i figured theres plenty of room for a scooter too so i parked there, well away from the motorcycle but still in the spot

i figured its reasonable and the other rider would not mind but later it occurred to me is there an unspoken rule that this is ok or not.

Agility 50 / where to mount a tach
« on: July 16, 2013, 12:30:08 AM »
bought a tach, pictured, its slightly smaller than the speedo (looks bigger in pic due to angle)

i was wondering about mounting beside the speedo, replacing the hi beam and turn signal lights

or any other ideas let me know, where have others mounted tachs?

cool thanks for the read.

i am wondering now if that gear set i posted would actually help, i read somewhere else that kymco already uses a taller gear set than most scooters but cant confirm.

the naraku set promises 10% if you have a 51-15 or 52-16 set which isnt much.

I counted the teeth on the  gear in the kymco service manual and got 41, couldn't count the pinion gear due to the angle.

There is a Hoca set that offers 41, 42 and 46 on the big gear, 16, 17 and 18 on the little gear. So maybe the gears are already good?

EDIT: OK, never mond the 41 was from the illustration, the picture shows 52-16 gear set stock, this means the hoca gears could offer a big improvement

i suspect i could still ' raise the gearing' a little more. Only problem is that i cannot skim any more off the variator boss as after checking the belt is rising up all the way to the edge.

That elusive 4mph i need to reach the magic 50mph is there somewhere i have just got to find it !!!
Was thinking why cant you literally raise the gearing? not the variator but the final drive gears.

i found this kit:
http://www.scooterdynasty.com/gearsnarakufinaldrivefor50cc4-stroke139qmbscooters.aspx

couldnt find too many kits like this, changing gears doesnt seem to be a common mod, i wonder why, seems the cvt could compensate for the taller gears at low speeds

did air tube mod and upjet to 95, top end is back now, motor just needed to breathe

bottom end is still sluggish, 22 again up that hill, going to try swapping rollers

i assume for the cvt we are shooting for peak hp rpm when ever possible, its 7500 on a stock 12" A50 or 8500 on a 10" A50

what should I shoot for on a bbk with stock head, 6500? 7000?

Agility 50 / Re: Buying a new carc
« on: July 13, 2013, 10:25:43 PM »
First of all thanks to everyone in helping me with this bike I got the new carb had a couple minor issues Like needing a new spark plug from me trying to get it to start over and over but I finally got the bike started!!!! Especially thanks to you Blue you always seem to have somehting to add butt I do have a new issue ha ha ha the bike doesn't want to take off I mean I can get it going after a while but it takes off very slow and soetimes acts like I am giving it no gas at all even thoughI have it at full throttle... I remember reading something someone else wrote about this and am about to scan through the forum. I borrowed some gas from my  neighbor and it has  been rainging like crazy maybe I have water in my gas? I have almost got the whole tank to e and am going to put some high end gas in it. Checking fule line for kinks air line seems to be good not sure what to do next air filter isn't all that dirty either.
good you got it started, though you should ask whoever sold you the carb what jetting it has, you might need to install new jets, alot easier than rebuilding a carb

have you drained the gas, cleaned out the tank and put in fresh gas.

cool I will drill some holes later, also going to grind the boss a little

the intake tube mod does seem to make a difference on mine, it seems to be running way lean now, I upjetted and am going to try it out later and also need to adjust the idle mixture screw, idling got rough after the mod

as for more power i don't know yet, though the scoot topped out at 42 before the mod actually 1 mph less than before my bbk, definitely lots of potential to get out of it still.

50 mph that would be nice, but yeah I agree it seems to be all gearing, i wonder would a race cdi help? So it can rev higher?

Agility 50 / grinding the variator boss
« on: July 12, 2013, 05:22:12 PM »
hey

i see others grinding the boss down to get more top end. i have questions about that

first does grinding the boss mean i get taller gears all the time, so should put in lighter weights so i don't lose bottom end

second so i don't mess up my boss if i grind too much or dont get it straight, wht if i used my old restricted boss with the shoulder on it, and ground off the shoulder. and how smooth does the shoulder have to be, when ground down, is it like a machined surface, if its not perfect will it still be ok?

thanks

I am shopping for a new carb and was wondering if any of you knew of any good deals I found one on ebay brand new 49.95 I was also wondering since all I am going to have to do is throw in the new carb would this be a good time for an upgrade and what should I go with. I can basicly hook up the carb I don't want to try to rebuild another one it was a real pain and although I learned alot I don't waant to go through all that again!
I wonder about those carbs for sale, like what jets are in them, i think you wnt to make sure the diameters are all the same and they have the same jets as your old carb (stock is 35 slow jet, 82 main)

just fyi I never rebuilt my carb, my scoot sat for 5 years i took the carb off and with carb cleaner and compressed air i cleaned it, took off one thing at a time blew out all holes put it all back together. wasnt that bad took 10-15 min and there was a youtube video i could watch if i wasn't sure of anything

the slow jet was a little hard to clean since the hole is so small, wife had this thin crafting wire that fit through and got the crud out

but over all it wasnt that bad, im glad i didn't buy a new carb now

Hi all, thanks to you all for the info and help. I ground down the variator boss, drilled three holes in muffler end and removed air box, changed to 6.5g rollers and fitted 1000rpm spring. 46mph anywhere very quickly with a few mph left if its a long straight. Acceleration is loads better too. I think i could still shave a bit more off the boss, i will check later and check the plug. Got a 90 jet in there for now but with no air box i might up it some more. Shortening the boss is like fitting a gear up kit. thanks again guys.
where did you drill holes in muffler exactly, and how big? did it make it a lot louder?
The restriction is placed where the white sealing is on the picture and will have to be cut or drilled out. :D
hey thanks for this, i like free mods, maybe its not well known, with all my searching i'm surprised i haven't seen it until now

i did not cut my hose in half, i carefully cut out the restriction with fine tip wood carving knives, then dremeled the rough edges, took a while but hose looks totally stock from the outside. just did it haven't rode it like this yet. wondering if i have to upjet now, have an 88 main jet on there (i have a 72cc bbk, stock head no other mods)

i put 8g rollers on, revs are definitely lower takeoff is slower but overall acceleration is about the same, still 22 up that same hill, pretty disappointing, but top end is back

might try to mix 8g and 6.5g for 7.25g, is that a good idea

or what about a race cdi, will that help too, they seem to be pretty cheap
