General Discussion / Re: X-Twon 300i Fuel Consumption & Range

Even though I've lived for over 25,000 days, on 3 continents, I still can't really enjoy motoring along with that yellow gas-pump light down there staring at me.
So, I head straight for the closest Top Tier station....(and, yeah - apparently I had another 50 miles worth of fuel in my Piaggio)

Just sayin'

Stig
Stig, you speak for a lot of us I'm sure.  As you'll see from my reply to John however, I do fancy pushing it just to get to know what the safe range is on the XT.  I know to within 10 miles how many miles I'll get out of a tankful with my Street Triple and I'd like to be able to say the same for the XT.

My Xtown 300 I US model gets 65-70 mpg US all the time.   Based on 64 years of riding and over 1.5 million miles experience.....and hating to WALK----screw the gas gauge----strange places I fuel every 100 miles, known places I sometimes go 150 miles-----best fuel measure is trip A, I set back each fill up and watch it on long trips.  I have ride ridden/work in both Asia and Europe.
Thanks John, like you I've used the trip rather than any gauge for assessing need to fill up for 40+ years now and rarely (only twice) have got caught out - on one memorable occasion in rural France, my Triumph died just as I coasted onto the forecourt of a French gas station.  Lucky or what?  I may start carrying a spare fuel bottle (1.5 litres) again, just while I assess both the range and the fuel light to empty distance on this new mount.  Like you, I hate to walk!

I'm now a couple of tanks-full into my new XT300 and pleased with the fuel performance so far at c85 UK mpg.

I have a question which is now niggling me though, when the fuel light comes on and fuel one bar indicator flashes, how far can you travel?  (I panicked and stopped within 10 miles for fuel (at which point the trip was on exactly 200 miles), only to find the most I could squeeze in was just over 10 litres, suggesting if the capacity of the tank is 12.5l, about 2 litres still left?  If so maybe another 25-30 miles?

Getting better!  I'm pushing up to 6,000 rpm now (as per Kymco UK advice, i.e. keep below 7.5K) which equates to 60 mph on a dead throttle so am now able to swing it into the twisties at something like optimum speed/lean angle.  Really getting to like this XT300, it is promising a great summer next year!

What hairs!  ;D
My Kenda's after 130 miles.  Still breaking in the engine, but know some nice, dry, grippy bends near me  ;)

I have plugged numerous tires and ridden them till worn out.  In one case I put 14,000 miles on a plugged motorcycle tire.  All of those plugs where the sticky strings and I have never had one of those fail or leak.  On the other hand every plug I have tried other than sticky strings ended up leaking.

One more thing, all of those plugged tires where on a car, pickup truck or the rear tire of a motorcycle or scooter.  I'm not sure I'd be willing to ride very long on a plugged front tire on a bike.   Luckily, I have only ever had one flat front tire on a bike and that was a tube tire so I replaced the tube.
I'm with you, those are good points regarding front v rear plugs.  I'd always only be inclined to plug a front just a a "get you home" measure and look to replace asap.  There again in my 50+ years of motorcycling I've only ever had one front tyre puncture...

Wonderful shots and scenery, thanks for sharing!  Makes my odd bike in front of a field pictures look very pedestrian.  Let's see more!

That was a great price - until the shipping kicked in!
:-)

I'll say, my UK one cost £3,799 all in or US$4,696.  Wonder what the freight charges would be?...

If I had to give one piece of advice to a new rider it would be this.  Don't ever stop learning or trying to improve your riding skills.  I've been riding for 39 years and I have never stopped trying to improve my skills.

I'm often amazed by people who have told me that they have been riding XX years but it's obvious that they can't ride for sh**.  Don't be that guy.  Everyone starts out with no experience.  Not everyone becomes a competent rider.  Taking the MSF is a good start.  Remember, it's just a start.

Oh yeah, don't forget to have fun!
Totally agree. It's a wasted day when you don't learn anything.  My total is now 51 years riding bikes of all sizes and scooters which has given me unparalleled enjoyment laced with the odd bit of pain, but the one thing you never do is stop learning.  Enjoy the ride!
