General Discussion / Re: Tires and Chicken Strips
« on: September 08, 2019, 03:33:18 PM »
Watched a big bike following a Honda Forza 300 at "sporty" speed through lovely UK countryside.
All was well for miles until ONE bend had gravel.....
Do not agree that scooter, or bike, will let you know permissable lean angles. Road surface will.
If you've reconned the route that day by car, or slow speeds on bike, then there's a good chance nothing is waiting to take you down in a corner.
Visit your local facility for Track Day on a closed circuit if you want to see what'll scrape on your bike.
I've read that most scooter and motorcycle crashes are "single vehicle" events. Just the rider and his bike.
Stig
Sound advice there Stig, but most of us will push it in the twisties because that's where the sheer enjoyment in motorcycling is to be found!  I know this is a trade off between forward vision (always look as far into the bend as you can searching out the vanishing point and watching for changes to surface, potholes, overbanding etc.), positioning to gain best line of sight, speed and the right gear should anything go wrong.   In the past when teaching advanced riding techniques, I always used to tell folks that a rider's best attribute is their imagination.  Just think, what could conceivably go wrong here and then plan for it!

Keep it shiny side up!

What's a chicken strip?
There’s a whole topic on this. But simply, it’s a reference to the unworn band at the edge of your tyres. It’s supposed to reflect your courage in how far you’re prepared to lean the machine!

Always ride within your limits.

I always used Michelin City Grip on my Honda PCX 125 and found them to be fantastic in terms of grip - to the extent of scraping the bodywork on one bend without losing grip at all!  The trade-off was wear which averaged 5K for a rear and about 8-9K for a front, an acceptable average I reckon.

My X-Town 300 comes with the Kenda OEMs and I'll be looking to change them ASAP and will doubtless go the Michelin Power Pure route as that's the only way to get a matched pair here in the UK at the moment.

Come over to Blighty then John, with our twisty roads I've never suffered a squared off tyre!  ;)

General Discussion / Re: Boots on bikes/scooter
« on: August 30, 2019, 10:31:43 AM »
I always wear something with ankle protection  when I ride but generally wear hiking or work boots on the scooters.  For long trips I'll wear waterproof boots.  For short trips I'll wear non waterproof boots.
Like you Klaviator, I ALWAYS wear boots (and gloves) when on two wheels - even the scooter.  You need the assurance of ankle protection.  My go to boots for the last few years now (onto my third pair now) are Alt-Bergs, a quality leather boot made here in the UK and also used by the British Armed Forces.  Great mix of comfort and waterproof (even the non GoreTex options) for at least an hour in downpours.

I am the resident complainer about dealers and their techs! I do not have a service manual for your model so will assume it is a similar system to other EFI machines in the Kymco stable. The CELP symbol continually lighted but with no blinky code?  Initial sequence is all warning/info lights lit during self-test then all go out after self-test except oil pressure symbol (if equipped). This includes CELP symbol. Then after a few seconds the CELP symbol should flash a code if there is a problem. CELP does NOT flash code with engine running, it just stays on to alert a problem. So, are you allowing enough time after self-test? 10 seconds max...

Service manual for DT300i and other EFI models state CELP is lit for two seconds with key on (no engine start) then goes out for five seconds before flashing codes.

Hello there, depending where you are in the UK, I know a good dealership with a knowledgable mechanic equipped with full diagnostic tools, they're in Crewe?

Downtown 300 / Re: 300 DT or 300 X-town any differences ?.
« on: August 29, 2019, 12:41:35 PM »
Guessing the 2018 ,2019 models of the 300 are now the X-Town ? Did it change in 2017 from DT to XT ?

Are we going to get a separate thread for the X-Town 300i owners?

I'm due to collect mine next week and I'm looking forward to picking up useful hints and tips from this Forum.
