Downtown 300 / Re: Downtown 200i/300i Steering head bearings replacement
« on: September 22, 2021, 07:11:58 PM »
I did it at my LBS 4 weeks ago and paid 2100sek =241usd
I think i paid 90usd for the original bearings.
i must say i prefer the old worn bearings, to much glide now :-)

Hi everyone!

Does anyone have links to perhaps aftermarket steering head bearings for the above bike? Mine's a downtown 200i 2012 model.

It has started to notch in the center, together with really wobbly steering when my hands loosen up. Also, every time I hit the front brake it knocks... pretty scary feeling like it's going to give way anytime.

I only intend to ride the bike for another 4-5 months and the dealer is expecting >$200 for the steering head bearing replacement. That's a little bit too much if I'm only going to be riding the bike for a short while.

Would anyone have links to maybe NTN bearings, or know the bearing size I should be looking for?

Thanks a lot @mousejunks  for your valuable info! Today I had the same issue, the difference here in Sweden is that we have to drive with headlight even during daytime.
Thou driving back home I turned them off, (no battery light 👍)
So I've contacted my dealer here in Stockholm and the did not have in stock, they needed 3 weeks! And 160usd 😳
So I've ordered one from your seller for 18usd.
Thanks again mate 👍👍

Yes, good plug.
They're not magic - but, for the $, a good addition to a scooter.

My main gripe about the Iridium spark plug is that....on a rainy old day - with wet flurries expected - and you're wanting to do something good  to your scooter  - you'll feel pretty dumb if you change your Iridium  plug.*
Dumb things'll probably last till the Rapture.
Stig

* and WHY do you even have a second Iridium plug? You'll be too old to remember where you put it- before you'll  ever need it!

Sorry Stig but i dont really understand what you mean?
If it was to me i have the orginal spark.
As a Swedish bloak i dont get everything in English 🤠😄

Thanks Karl
Then i know now that nothing serious will happen today on the way tork 😄
TV, I meant to get back on this sooner, sorry! The grease in the tube between the bearings is no big deal as long as the seales at both ends are operational. The one next to the roller bearing is the weak one but yours looks good.

Today ive changed my belt to a new, only 9000km and 24mm wide but its 4-5 years old so why not 😄 The rubber maybe old.
Also changed airfilter and it was a good time to do it, dirty.
Removed a lot of grease from the clutch between the 2 bearings, i need to try because im not sure there suppose to be grease there. (As the picture shows)
Changed back from 15g Pulleys to orginal, again 😂 (great acc with Pulley but to high rpm)
Take care out there

My personal preference on splines is a Permatex product called antiseize. It is a high temperature silver-like grease that prevents things corroding/rusting being "locked" together. Must be used sparingly: a little dab will do ya!

Karl

Thanks once again Karl 🤗

You cannot lube the red one, the red one is next to the nut that holds the clutch assy on. You are NOT dumb! Questions are for when you do not know something. Old guys like most of us here are for giving you all the wrong answers! Har, har! Back to reality, your other excellent picture of the roller bearing (last picture page one) is the one you want to lube. A small dab on the tip of a finger that will fit inside the bearing. A little bigger than a Hershey's mini choclate candy kiss. Go buy four pounds of those, take one for a pattern, send the rest here! That does it!

Karl
So nice when you help us unexperienced here, so you do not have to leave the scooter to the workshop every time ! Then it feels safer if anything happens on the way.
Thank you Karl for making it crystal clear 👌
Im also a bit confused about the grease between the the two roller bearings, should it be grease there?(as seen on the last picture, page one)The surface that have contacts with the spline (driveshaft?) On the opposite side (variator) there is none grease on the splines.
Take care // Niklas

Sorry for my stupidity Karl, but!
Do i need to remove the nut to grease the clutch or just add some where the picture is taken?
