General Discussion / Re: 50cc hard to start an hour after ridden
« on: May 02, 2021, 11:40:14 AM »
Just curious....while it was still under warranty - what did the dealer say?

Stig
Now the rest of the story... the scooter is my son’s.   He has gone to University and left his scooter at home.  So now I joy ride and maintain it.   When I experienced the issue I asked my son about it.  He said, “It’s always done that.”   I also asked him about the bogging when cold and he gave me the same response.

In summary, the dealership was never asked the question. I suppose I could call the dealership, but that would be too easy and then I would not need this forum.

General Discussion / 50cc hard to start an hour after ridden
« on: May 01, 2021, 01:40:26 PM »
I've had a (2016) Super 8 50R (Agility 50 engine) since it was new.  Now about 3400 miles on it now.  It has been tuned up recently (new plugs, valve adjustment, new air filter, oil/gear oil change, new battery).  Ever since new it starts immediately or will start immediately if I turn it off and turn it back on... also idling perfectly.   But if I've ridden the scooter and park it for a 1/2 hour or hour, then try to restart I have to give it throttle and then continue to give it a bit of throttle for 10-15 seconds to then have the bike idle properly else it will stall/not start.  Once I get it going it runs perfect.  This issue has existed since new.

Is this just one of those temperamental 50cc carb things or is this an obvious sign of a faulty device (petcock valve? mixture screw?).  I did drill the hole in the gas cap to see if this was causing a vapor lock, but afterwards did not notice a difference/issue not resolved.

I'm fine living with it, but if a simple fix, I might as well fix it.

Agility 50 / Re: Problems new agility 50 (2020)

I have a carbed 2016 Super 8 50R based on the Agility platform.  It takes a bit to warm it up and stop the bogging if the temps are below 80F.  At 60F I have to drive a mile or two for the bogging to subside, but even then, the engine isn't a big fan of cooler weather.  At 80F the bogging issues are basically gone after 1/4 mile but a couple miles in when the engine is good and hot it is at prime performance.

Until the engine is good and hot you just need to be delicate feathering the throttle.  Once the engine is hot (and it takes a lot to warm this engine) then you can jump on WOT.

We got a couple inches of snow last night as well.   I spent the last few weekends giving a tune-up to my son's 50cc Super 8 he left at home when he went to University last summer.  2 weeks ago the scoot wouldn't even start... then I got it to idle but bog down with the slightest of throttle... now after new fuel, new spark plugs, new air filter and a valve adjustment I think it is running as good as ever.  I never really took it out before but have put about 40 miles on it the past few weeks... it has about 3400 miles on it.   It will still bog at WOT when cool but that improves as the engine warms up after a couple miles.  The temps have not really gotten out of the 60's here so I expect the Super 8 to run even better as it gets warmer... so really looking forward to this snow melting.  In another week it is supposed to make its way to 75F.

Give it a pull.  Good luck.

Super 8 / Re: Top Speed 2021 Super 50 cc

I have a 2016 Super 8 50cc, which I think was the first year of this newest design.  I weigh 220lbs.  When new, I could get to about 24mph.  I did 4 things and now easily get to 32-33 on a flat road... slight downhill up to 35mph.

  • On the CDI, pulled out one of the purple/red wires and cover end with electric tape (I can re-insert if needed)
  • I bought an unrestricted (no collar) variator boss and had the scooter shop install it
  • I only use Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic oil and Mobil 1 85W-90 gear oil, which I install myself annually
  • I disassembled the intake manifold to the carb and removed a washer jammed in there that restricts air flow

I've considered other mods but I know every next mod tends to throw something else out of whack... endless cycle.
I have taught myself how to do valve adjustments, replaced spark plugs and adjust the idle.
When cold/cool, my throttle will bog down (cut out) under quick acceleration... which diminishes the warmer the engine gets and the warmer the air temperature gets.  If the temp is only is the 60's it will take a mile or two to have that bogging issue all but disappear... the warmer the air, the quicker the issue goes away.   I think I have about 3400 miles currently on the scooter.  I got the scooter for my son, but he is now in college and did not take it with him, so it has become my project to maintain it and take it for 20 minute joy rides now and again.   It once had gas in it for 2 years and had been nearly a year since started... I had to empty the tank, and give it fresh gas with some Sea Foam... it took about 20 minutes trying to start it with a few battery re-charges, but finally got it going.  I think now it is running as good as it ever has.   Don't leave gas in it over the winter.

The Super 8 is a good looking scooter, but it is a bit heavy, which I think makes it slightly slower than the Agility.  Good luck sorting it all out.

I use the metal fixture with teeth on it. It works a charm. I got it from a member Josh here I think.

I had 2 put 2 thickish washers as shims though so it engages the teeth better.

Thanks.  We'll give it a shot when it arrives.

Uh oh.  I thought I was all set to upgrade to a smooth variator boss.  I got my breaker bar with 17mm socket and variator lock.

Unfortunately, when I pulled of the cover I see my 2015 Super 8 50R has a plastic fan with no holes to use with the tool I bought.

I really don't want to use an impact wrench, particularly to put the variator bolt back on.  Do I need to get one of those little metal pieces with the teeth that screws into the bolt holes to keep this variator from spinning?  Anyone have a link to one?  Any other tool for this type of fan to lock it?

Agility 50 / Re: CDI Restriction
« on: June 28, 2017, 11:59:33 AM »
Over the years there have been several forum mentions the Kymco OEM CDI fully limited maxes RPMs at ~7500.  With the purple wire cut it is still limited ~9K RPM.  This is a good thing for the longevity of a scooter, if true.  I don't have an RPM gauge to test and have no hills to try to test the claim.

Super 8 150 / Re: New 2017 Super 8 150x or Zuma 125
« on: June 28, 2017, 11:53:25 AM »
Super 8 150X is the US model based on the Agility platform.  It has a carb vs. FI.  This is good and bad.  It provides more flexibility to work on it yourself if that is your thing, but can be a little more temperamental.  Ultimately, it is a very solid proven scooter platform.

My 2015 Super 8 based on the Agility platform took me from 28 to 33-35 after pulling the purple/red wire.

Call me fickle, but I just ordered a smooth variator boss from Scooter Assassins.  Not sure how long it will take to ship from Taiwan.  I'm thinking I'll get better fuel economy at ~ 35mph and ultimately am just curious, I guess.  I'll let you know how it turns out after it arrives in a few weeks.

Agility 50 / Re: Speeds on Agility 50
« on: June 07, 2017, 09:15:58 PM »
My 2015 Super 8 based on the Agility platform (but a few pounds heavier) would do 28mph restricted.  I live on very flat land and the highest speed limit in my town in 35 mph.  After clipping the CDI red/purple wire I get to 33 mph pretty easily and 35 mph if I wind it out over a longer distance.  35 mph is about the max I want to do.  My understanding is a restricted Kymco OEM CDI caps RPMs at 7500 but 'unrestricted' still caps RPMs at 9000.  The furtherest 35 mph stretch I have to ride is ~ 2 miles and don't drive it but once or twice a week.  Also, I now have Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil and Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil on board and I know that delivers significantly greater protection then any conventional oil.   I'd be more concerned about the unrestricted CDI if I was driving down long steep hills, but on flat land I don't see me burning anything up... and no posts anywhere on the web with a Kymco owner that has had such a failure, yet plenty derestrict their CDIs.

After researching the pros/cons of switching to a smooth variator boss, I'm sticking with the OEM one with the shoulder.  Based on all I've learned how things function the only downside of staying OEM is limited top speed (and I'm going as fast as I want to go already)and the motor will work harder with higher RPMs more often... but these engines are bullet proof and I have high confidence in synthetic engine oil.

The downside of switching to a smooth variator boss is that while the top end is increased and the engine does not work as hard, the top end becomes weak and you really need increased jets to maximize impact.  Related, I've also read posts that some have degraded the smooth acceleration potential once they put in a smooth boss.. i.e., other issues surfaced for whatever reason.   Not to mention in a town with 35 mph max speed limits I create more legal risk potential.

In summary, while I know some are adamant that you MUST put in a smooth variator boss if you derestrict the CDI, I've found no proof anywhere on the web to prove the risk, particularly with a Kymco.  I do understand the conceptual risk.

General Discussion / Success!!
« on: June 07, 2017, 08:33:48 PM »
This morning I removed the seat to get into the engine and loosed then tightened the intake manifold at the 3 contact points (2 flange screws + hose clamp).  I also turned the idle screw about 1/8 of a turn clockwise increasing the idle.  Now with the engine hot it will start up on the 1st or 2nd press without any throttle... tried it several times.   The starter also seems to punch harder than I recall.  Another observation is the scooter seems to pull through acceleration smoother... no flat spots.  Who would have thunk 2 almost non-changes to the system would make any discernible impact?  Anyway, I'm not complaining, neither is my son, the primary user.

I would not feel it extra-ordinary that a hot engine might require a partial throttle position when starting.

Good to know.
