People 250 / Re: Carburetor Questions.

At 20K miless, if you've never adjusted the valves, it's a safe bet they're complete out of spec and can cause all manner of idle problems, hard starting and loss of power at the top end especially. the good news is you can remove the body cover and seat and have access to the head fairly easily.

People 250 / People S 250 reboot
« on: March 30, 2018, 06:03:42 PM »
My 07 people S 250 was starting to look a bit tired, so we tore it down over the winter, replaced a bunch of plastic, new paint, new belt, replaced the rollers with Dr. Pulley 19g sliders and an Emgo reverse cone shorty muffler. The muffler was for an 1 5/8" and came with reducers, but not enough, so I found a bronze bushing with an 1.125: ID. 1.5" OD that worked perfectly as an adapter.

I considered buying an NOS MRP 300cc kit, but they're pricey and completely unsupported with MRP closing.

I use the pliers end of my stripper/crimper, never had a problem that I saw the need for a special tool, but I might try the screw idea since it's free.

General Discussion / Re: New Kymcos to come to U.S.
« on: November 27, 2017, 07:22:36 AM »
The US doesn't drive the scooter market, but the market's good enough in the US for Yamaha to bring in the XMax 300 which immediately drew my attention away from anything Kymco had in that size class simply because 2 wheel ABS is a non-negotiable feature in my next scooter. I can find new 500i ABS which have 2 wheel ABS but I'm having a hard time with the dealers I'd trade with seeing my ideas on devaluation just sitting in a create for a year or more...

not sure what's more gorgeous, the mountains or those dead sexy curves carved into them...

I ride mine at 60-65mph all day long no problems and I get a kick out of the peole who see a scooter don't expect it to be as quick as it is.

7
I'm getting mixed up with kmh to mph conversions.

This is the run I made after the scoot got back from the shop, freshly tuned, the Kymco mechanic says this is typical of the breed. They also tend to run rich from the factory.

I have an '07 S 250, tuned to perfection it's top speed via GPS is 76 on flat ground, calm day. 0-60 will keep most cars off your tail and it will keep up with any 250cc bike I've encountered until that magic 60 at which point they drop a gear a disappear while I creep up to 76.

Two stations in Boone sell 91 pure, if I get caught away from 91, I run 87 pure with no problems, maybe a negligible hint of performance loss. I have a couple 1.5L fuel bottles on order I'm going to carry with me on longer trips, I've actually considered mounting an aux. fuel tank under the seat to boost the range.

Thanks for the report back, putting it up for the winter, where do you live?

Right in the middle of Iowa pretty much

Essentially a carburetor full of gunk and a stuck float was the cause of the no start, they also replaced the air filter at my request, changed the oil and did a full inspection. Did a 10 mile test ride from the dealer to a friend's house, put it on the trailer from there to bring home, at which point it started right up and I took it for a quick ride to a nearby state park and back. Weather should be good for a couple more rides this week and then probably to bed for the rest of the winter.

This is the best time to buy two wheelers and boats in Iowa, worst time to buy a snowmobile or any 4WD. Unfortunately, it also means you might not get to ride it till spring, which is frustrating. It's done at the shop, the snow is gone and the streets are dry, it was sunny and 43 today, I could have ridden it home, had to spend the day at the hospital unfortunately. Snow tomorrow,  Saturday's gone obviously, Christmas Day is 50 and rain with some sun so there's a slight chance of a ride Wednesday, but after that winter pretty much shuts it down till February or March.

New to me, just picked it up Tuesday, and already in the shop...

No worries, it will come out ready for the spring in better shape than it went in.

This is my first big scooter, I have a couople of 50cc's hot rodded to 100cc for fun, but this is going to be primary transportation in the season.

Well, all things considered I'd say things are good and clogged, or the fuel pump's out. It ran fine at the dealer, ran fine that night, ran fine in the morning and drove great, then blah. I'm not familiar enough with the engine to know if a timing chain can jump, but it could be a timing issue of some sort I suppose too. I pulled the tup, didn't see anything obvious, nothing disconnected etc.

But I currently have 2 scooters in pieces I need done by spring and basically no room with this beast opened on so we loaded her back on the trailer and took it over to the Kymco dealer in Ames, we'll have them get it running, and then go over everything, check out the engine etc in general, address any issues and then get it ready for winter storage.
