People 250 / Re: Rethreading rear axle, replacing nut
« on: July 14, 2017, 03:45:27 AM »
With more than 90,000 miles on Kymco 250's and now GTi 300, I have been through this entire process a number of times, with mine and friends Kymco scooters. Removing the "swing arm" from the drive shaft, this is not an axle, can be done with a 3 point puller. Drill the swing arm, install the proper length bolts with fender washers and nuts on the back side, spray a penetrating lube on the bearing ( let it sit for several hours) and tighten the center puller bolt. Off it will come. The danger in pounding on the drive shaft with a 5# sledge is that this drive shaft, not axle, is attached to a gear and rides on a bearing in the transmission !!! These hidden parts can be badly damaged and are not fun to replace. use a high pressure grease, as we do on BMW splined shafts, on the splines and a good quality anti-seize at the bearing interface. Future rear tire changes will be a breeze !

Not scooters, 1982 R 100 CS and a 2007 R 1200 GS. I sold my 1976 R 90/6 last year to a fellow in Germany for $6,700.00. It had only 24,000 moles on it and looked great.

We do a long distance scooter trip once a year plus many shorter rides. On the 24th we will head to Oshkosh for the EAA fly in. In late September we will make the yearly pilgrimage down the Blue Ridge Parkway, always fun. I had 53,000 miles on my People 250 when I sold it, after purchasing an S250. I sold the S250 to a friend at 32,000 miles. It was the 250 on the Texas trip. It still runs like a clock. I still like my 2 BMW's but I think the Kymco GTi300 is great fun.

Just for reference, DC to La roundtrip is 5,336 miles if you never get off the freeway.Columbus Ohio to Austin Texas roundtrip is 2,548 miles on the freeways. So 3,516 miles is easy on all back roads with plentyof exploring. Remember it's not the destination but the journey !!!!

It's easy. First you visit the Civil War battlefields in Kentucky, such as Perrysville, then you ride part of the Natchez TrailParkway. Now it's time to head to Hot Springs AK for a few days of exploring the area, then on to Texas to ride the Hill Country. A bit of wandering around Jefferson and Nacodoches before heading to Austin for two days. Into the Hill Country with stops in Fredericksburg, didn't miss the National Pacific War Museum, Llano and San Saba, home of Tommy Lee Jones, and then north to Clebourn to visit family and explore the Dallas, Ft Worth for three days. Headed north east into Oklahoma, thru Broken Bow taking 259 north to highway 1 east. This is the Talimena Scenic Drive, great views in the mountains !! Across Arkansas through Mountain View to Mamouth Springs at the border and into Missouri and a tour through the Mark Twain National Forest. We then crossed the Mississippi River and Ohio River into Kentucky. With a stop in Paducah and Louisville we headed home !! That is how you get that many miles from Columbus Ohio to Texas and back !

Just completed a 3,516 mile trip from Columbus, Ohio to Texas. There were 2 Kymco scooters on the trip : GTI 300 and a People S250. We all had a great time ! This is one of our shorter scooter trips. The longest was 6,344 miles and 28 days. I broke a cvt belt last year coming back from Yellowstone N P. No problem, I had a spare with me. The break occurred in Iowa and I was back on the road in 1 1/2 hours. A group of us have traveled from Maine to Washington on 250 cc scooters. I also have 7 motorcycles including a BMW 1200 GS. The scooters are great fun for traveling. We take 2 lane back roads and the most common question is : "How did you get your scooters here ?". We answer, "We started them up and headed this direction !"
