Grandvista 250 / Hard Start Issue
« on: April 02, 2018, 07:34:44 PM »
I need some help on this one. I have a 2009 Kymco Grandvista 250. Upon starting, I clutch the left brake, it will turn over. If it doesn't fire up within a couple pushes of the start button, it stops completely from turning over. I can push the start button and only hear a click sound. Then, if I clutch both the left and right brakes at the same time after trying it with the left one only, it will turn over a few more times. If it doesn't fire up by this time it goes completely dead again and it will not even turn over. Then, when I jump start it after that using another battery, the same thing happens with the brakes if it doesn't fire up. First the left one will work, then after two punches of the start button it goes dead again, then I hold both, same thing if it doesn't fire up. So, I suspected the Brake Stop Switches. I took them apart and cleaned the contacts and confirmed they were working properly. After all this, if I jump it off from the car it will usually fire right up no matter which brake I hold or how many times it takes.  The battery is good and tests good.  Any ideas...?

Your instincts are right on... it turns out I received a second Bad Brand New Battery that wasn't putting out the right amperage. I must say, it is becoming all too common receiving bad brand new stuff these days.  Also, the valves did need adjusting.

Yes 360 on the flywheel and 180 on the camshaft... yes, now it will start using a jump start from the car. Fires right up usually on the first or second try. And, if my battery is fully charged to 13.03 or more it will start, but it doesn't turn over as strong as if jumping from the car... and if it doesn't catch the first two tries it will just run the battery down trying.

Maybe you can help explain further... so, i put the flywheel at the "T" for TDC and then set the valve timing gear was set as instructed. Big hole up and little holes even with the head. It would not crank. So, i turned the flywheel 1 full rotation and then reset the valve gear and then it starts hard but runs great afterwards.

The update is... the timing was 180 out so I finally set that correctly. However, it's still a hard start, but runs great after it's started. If the battery is fully charged at 13.01 it will start the scooter. but once I reach where I'm going it just doesn't have the same kick and I am assuming my charging system isn't working properly. The battery is a good battery. When it turns over it has a hollow metal sounding like cranking sound if that makes any sense. And if it doesn't quite get past the compression stroke on some attempts it has a winding zzz sound. It has a new starter so that is working fine.

Grandvista 250 / Hard Start Problem...

Ok, I have a 2009 Grand Vista 250 and I bought it used and have done a bunch of work and replaced a lot of parts. I'm finally at the point where I can start it only if I jump start it.  I replaced the battery with the right battery with 180 cranking amps. It's much batter but still doesn't quite get it. If I jump start it with the CRV it usually starts right up after a few tries. Is this a timing issue...?  Maybe a tooth or two off...? I will check tomorrow but I was hoping for some feed back.  Thank you. This forum rocks.

Figured it out after reading this post http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=25018.0
Who knew there was a kickstand kill switch...?  LOL

Grandvista 250 / No spark from the spark plug when trying to turn over...
« on: December 27, 2017, 12:33:20 AM »
I have a 2009 GV and I have replaced the CDI Unit and the Ignition Coil and still no spark from the plug. The plug is new too. Any suggestions on where else to look. All the fuses are good.

So, I received the OEM crankcase cover gasket and it is installed and the starter is working perfectly now.  However, I have another problem. Now there is no spark from the spark plug. I have a new spark plug, and replaced it just incase I received a bad new one. It's happened to me before with NGK plugs. I also replaced the CDI and Ignition Coil, still nothing. It's turning over fine now, it just won't fire. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

Ok, here's the final update on my problem.  Through this whole process I have learned that Kymco engineers these motors to the finest of tollerances. When I removed the right crankcase cover I did not have an OEM cover gasket to replace the old one, so I went out and purchased the Gasket maker stuff in a tube.  This was the mistake.  It turns out the starter gear is held in place with a dowel that is held in place by the engine body and cover. If you do not use an OEM gasket the cover will pinch the starter gear and not let the starter motor turn at all.  After backing out the screws just ever so slightly, the starter worked great. So, I am waiting on my OEM gasket to arrive from Israel.

Thanks MrBios for the info... I guess I did all I could do for the timing considering the info you shared. Everything is in TDC.  As for my new problem. As I said, I removed the right crank case cover and replaced the circlip on the drive gear that connects it to the drive shaft of the water pump & oil pump and then put it back together, new gaskets etc, filled with new oil and coolant (and yes I have the front of the scooter off so I can access the radiator) and then I went to start it and the starter solenoid clicked and the starter motor did a grunt and then nothing. Keep in mind, it was running before I replaced the circlip, when I removed the right crank case cover no electrical wires need to be touched. After this, I pulled out the starter motor and found that it was fried on the inside, melted. So, I ordered a new one and started looking at my grounds. That's when I found my main power line melted to the main ground wire in three spots.  Whatever happened when I tried to crank it the first time caused them to melt and ground out.  I fixed those wires and installed a new starter motor and now nothing happens. The solenoid clicks and the motor does nothing.  I ook the motor out and tested it and it runs great.  I can turn the fly wheel by hand, but I think the only thing it can be at this point is the starter clutch...  Any suggestions...?

Thank you for the responses... they really helped.  I was able to properly set the timing. The bike over heated and fried the piston, it literally melted and popped a hole in the piston.  The cylinder was surprisingly still in good shape and just needed some lite sanding. After replacing the piston, rings, pin, clips, gaskets, valves, flushing out the engine... I put it all back together and it cranked right up and ran for a bit until it over heated.  So, I checked the waterpump and the impeller was free wheeling.  I opened up the right crank cover and discovered the real reason the bike overheated and fried the piston.  The circlip that holds the gear that connects to the small drive shaft for the waterpump and oilpump was gone...(huge design flaw in my opinion) so, no waterpump or oil pump. I replaced the circlip and put evrything back together and tried to start it and the starter motor fried. I have replaced the starter motor and all it does is grind a bit.  Now I have a short somewhere that is keeping it fromk starting.

Grandvista 250 / How do I set the timing on the Grandvista 250..?
« on: November 10, 2017, 10:25:47 PM »
I recently purchased a used 2009 Grandvista 250 that needed a new piston. So, all the work was done and everything is almost back together.  The problem I'm having is "How do I set the timing???"  I know what to do with the cam shaft, but where the heck is the "T" for Top Dead Center or where is the marking for top dead center...?  Where is the T on the flywheel...?
