General Discussion / Re: AK 550 sub forum request
« on: November 22, 2021, 06:41:09 PM »
I understand entirely anyone's reluctance to have a Facebook account. Having just retired after two decades living and working abroad, Facebook has been brilliant in providing my spouse and me opportunities to stay in touch with friends at home and across the globe.

These days, my interaction with Facebook is solely via Groups. Groups are subject-specific and moderated. I pay little attention to my news feed, which is just a means of feeding the algorithm.

All that said, as the owner of a Kymco X Town 300, a People 250 and a Like 200i, it's frustrating to find support for only the Like.

As to the original question regarding the addition of new "sub-headings" for new scoots, while it's all well and good that "...there are plenty of other web based forums on Maxi-scoots...", why isn't that happening in a Kymco forum that's presumably dedicated to Kymco products?

I don't do facebook, but for the many who do - could you give links to the relevant subjects?
Thank you
Stig

The first is a very active and current group. The second is based in the Philippines (I'm friends with several members) and the third has frequent posts concerning Kymco.

4th. You'll have better luck on of the several Kymco groups on Facebook.

This thread opened in October 2018, yet not one new subheading has been added. There are several groups on Facebook where you'll find more current and useful information regarding your particular make and model of Kymco. Pretty pointless hanging around here.

Kayaking and cycling on the beach in Mexico. All four Kymcos are on Battery Tenders back home

General Discussion / Re: Lithium battery factoids
« on: December 17, 2020, 03:58:59 AM »
There seems some confusion here. There are two primary types of lithium batteries commonly used: lithium ion (li-ion) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4). "Lipo" batteries (lithium polymer) are identical to lithium-ion except that they use a gel electrolyte.

Power tools and other applications requiring high discharge typically use li-ion. They have much higher energy density and can, if handled or charged improperly, suffer internal shorting and thermal runaway.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are less energy-dense, and the chemistry is far and away more stable and tolerant of misuse or improper charging. They are essentially incapable of thermal runaway.

Those dramatic hoverboard conflagrations in the news a few years ago demonstrated the hazards of poorly manufactured and poorly handled lithium ion batteries.

And yes, don't charge below freezing except at a very low current. Doing otherwise results in irreversible damage to the anode.

Is it not possible to replace the batteries?

In my small Arizona town I'm free to ride my Like 200i anytime I wish, sometimes a bit to cavalierly. When in the considerably larger city of Chiang Mai I do everything to avoid the morning and evening white-knuckle rush hour.

We keep a Yamaha NMax and Aerox in Thailand. They're only 155cc but they're superb rides. I'd consider giving up my Kymco X-Town if I could find the NMax here.

Two days ago I returned to Arizona from Thailand. I had already sheltered-in-place there for 2 weeks before leaving. In Thailand just to enter a 7-11 one submitted to a temperature check, had sanitizer poured into one's hands and had to be wearing a mask. I arrived at LAX where there were no checks and very few wearing masks. It was the same in Tucson. Thankfully my tiny bohemian town is taking things far more seriously.

Today the two 200i, the Xtown and the People 250 were taken out of storage and started up. Now to shake the jet lag.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone purchase a new 5g phone?
« on: April 03, 2020, 08:16:22 AM »
For many, being able to use a phone with the speed and data capacity of most fiber installations will offer the opportunity to "cut the cable", using the phone both home and away and dispensing with one more monthly bill.

I've never ridden one.  From the many posts I have read, they really aren't that much like 3 wheelers, they are heavy and still require significant effort to push around and keep upright. BUT,  (it is claimed) they seem to skirt some EU laws on licensing and handle loose surfaces better.  So maybe they have a niche in a way that I can't imagine.
The Yamaha Tri-City 125 weighs about 150kg, to the MP3's 241kg, and only 22kg heavier than the Nmax I ended up buying. With it's tilt suspension it was very nimble and tracked beautifully over bad pavement. It's unfortunate that the perception that it was heavy and awkward helped fuel it's demise.

I rented a Yamaha Tri-City in Thailand last year. I was pretty self conscious initially because of its appearance but after a couple of days riding on some primitive back roads I came to appreciate how remarkably stable it was. By that I mean not that it won't fall over, but how deftly the bike managed potholes and loose gravel due to its increased surface contact. Had it had a 150cc engine and more leg room I would have bought one. I should note that nobody rents them out anymore because, as one dealer explained, most people, Thais and foreigners alike, thought it was ugly.

He was able to sell it days after my offer for full price.
What was the full price?
