Ugh...I'm such a dunce. So it wasn't the reeds that were bent, it was the reed stopper plate that was bent...as it presumably should be. The actual reeds looked ok though, no cracking or bending. OH well, live and learn.

Sorry for the false positive...anything else I should look at? I will also check out that o-ring on the oil pump. Thanks!

Wow you were spot on there! :)

They reeds were pretty bent (are they supposed to be completely straight initially?). Unfortunately they are irregularly shaped so that it only fits in one direction, so I don't think I can flip them over without having to cut some steel. It's ok though, the intake gasket was really crusty and fell apart when I initially took it off so I'll need to order that as well. Do you think this could also cause the starting problems I mentioned in the OP?

OK thanks for the tips...I think that's a much better way to test the autochoke than what the service manual said.

I've just gotten all the externals taken off, and I noticed that the oil/gas is actually leaking back into the air intake/filter and then dripping out the backside of the casing there. Anything in particular that would cause it to do that?

Hi,

Well I plan on de-winterizing my zx50 this weekend. But first I wanted to attempt to fix some nagging problems that seemed to worsen before I garaged it last November.

The major problem is that the thing just has a terrible time starting sometimes, especially after I drive it, park it for a few minutes, then attempt to start it again. Originally I had this problem and fixed it just by changing out the spark plug, but that didn't seem to be the problem this time around. I suspect that it's a problem with the autochoke...perhaps maybe it's not adjusting the fuel intake properly so that when the engine has heated up it lets in too much fuel and floods it?

I've also noticed some oil leakage spots, but I'm thinking it may be from the hose that lets out excess fuel/oil. So I'm hoping the two problems are related. That said, the autochoke is fairly new as I replaced the whole carb system when I purchased it. I'm not really mechanic-savvy, so any other opinions on what it could be would be welcome! Thanks!

I was picking up a part for my zx50 at a dealership a couple hours away, and noticed that they had a brand new 2009 Super 9 "green tagged" (clearanced) for only $1499 OTD. I think the normal MSRP is $2499, so it looked like a steal of a deal. Before I get too crazy and jump on this, I wanted to see what the rest of you had found out there price wise for a new S9. There aren't very many Kymco dealers around where I live, so I don't have much to compare to. thanks!

Well finally we've got some sunshine here, so I've been able to take her out the past few days. She's running great now! I drained all the fuel out as suggested and it did look like there was a small amount of water in it...bummer that it was a full tank!

Anyway, the other problems seem to have gone away w/ the new spark plug...even the compressed air problem I mention seems to have all but gone away.

I do have one final problem though. I think the vent in my fuel cap gets clogged, as I still have had a couple times where it will just die on me at random points. However, as soon as I take the fuel cap of and remove the rubber seal, I can start it up and not have any more problems. Is there anything I can do to further help out w/ the venting or should I just get a new fuel cap?

Can you do a compression test on it? That would eliminate/verify some problems. Rain, and scooters don't mix well I have one that sputters in the heavy morning fog we get here from time to time. Also if you could verify whether or not you have spark now. Also there could be water in the fuel now from removing the gasket on the cap. Try clearing the fuel system into a clear glass container to verify that also.

I don't have a compression gauge, but I think my father in law has one, so I might wait until they come up in a couple weeks to test that out, rather than shell $30 for one. It would be good to have one anyway so maybe I'll ask the mrs. when she's in a good mood ;). I'll try siphoning the gas out as well. I didn't think too much water got in there when I took the cap off but I suppose it doesn't take much to affect the combustability.

well I hope I don't become a problem child here   :-[,

Scooter was running fine until I got caught in a rainstorm yesterday. It stalled once about halfway home (I think it's due to my tank not venting properly). After I took the rubber seal off the gas cap, I was able to get it started and got home fine. This morning I tried taking it out and it started up great. I got about 3/4 a mile from home when I lost thrust and the engine started gurgling, I went about 20 more feet until I finally came to a stop where it promptly died. It wouldn't start back up at all, kick start or electric. Ended up having to walk it back home...

I know rain is very bad for scooters, but where do I start now?

Well it's been somewhat cold & rainy rainy & and I've been crazy busy so I didn't have time until today to tinker with it. However, I may have solved the starting issue. The spark plug gap was at least twice as wide as the 0.6mm specified in the manual. That coupled with a possible weak spark could have caused the problems. After changing the spark plug out it fired up right away! However, I didn't have time to take it on a long ride or anything, but hopefully I'll be able to do that and see if that fixes everything. Thanks again for all the help!

thanks again for the help & the greeting! I think I'll try the simple things first like replacing the spark plug. I'm not incredibly handy or knowledgable, so things like compression tests and replacing the exhaust are a little intimidating :). Having a scooter though has been a GREAT introduction to all of it though.

edit: One thing I might add, the starting problem happens both when it's been sitting for hours, and just after a ride, so I'm not sure that it would be due to the carbon expanding, however it is a novel idea I would have never thought of  8).

Wow looks like I came to the right place  :).

A little side info that may help as well. I bought this beauty last year and it only had 70 miles on it! Problem was it had been garaged for 3 years and I had to replace the petcock, carb & battery to get it running. I also derestricted the CDI and replaced the boss drive. Later on last year I put an aftermarket variator on it. It runs great & up to 50 mph and now my only problem is this frequent starting problem.

I have downloaded the manual before, I actually compiled it all into one PDF if you would like it instead of having one for each chapter. Since the problem is that the "starter motor rotates but engine doesn't start", there's only 4 suggestions given: 1. faulty starter pinion 2. starter motor rotates reversely 3. faulty starter clutch 4. weak battery. Of course it could probably be something else but I thought I'd at least work through these first ;). Off the bat I think I can eliminate battery and the starter motor rotating reversely. So that leaves me w/ the starter pinion & clutch. What's the difference b/w the two? Aren't they the same thing? Or are they referring to the auto-bystarter as a clutch?

Hi everyone!

I'm having some starting issues with my 2005 zx50. I'd say a good 40% of the time it starts up fine, but oftentimes it just doesn't for whatever reason (usually the problem happens after longer rides, but not always). One thing that does seem to happen pretty consistently is that after unsucessfully attempting to start 3 or 4 times, I'll hear a shot of compressed air coming out the exhaust. After this the scooter starts. Also, I'm usually able to kick start it when I have problems starting it electrically.

I thought it might be due to having a lean mixture, however I pulled the spark and it's brown, and I have a slightly rich setting on my air/fuel screw. I'm wondering now if the starting problem is electrical in nature. The reason I'm asking is that all of my problems seem to arise from a vacuum that is created when I turn the key on to engage the electrical components (starter, CDI). The same vacuum is also released when I disengage the electricity. The red kill-switch doesn't do anything, but when I turn the key off after killing the engine, I hear the same shot of compressed air out the exhaust I mentioned above.

Could the CDI be bad or something like that?
