zx50 / Darned Spark Plugs!
« on: June 01, 2012, 07:05:40 PM »
I have ordered the BR8HS and the BPR8HS and neither of them will work on my bike. The end that goes into the spark plug cap is threaded inside the end of the spark plug end. While the one I need has the threaded end that stucks outside the end of the spark plug (like a screw). I assume the the "A" in BR8HSA and BPR8HSA represents the end of the spark plug that goes into the cap. Dang-it back to amazon!

They were dimming as I was riding. I discovered one of your (Zombie's) replies on a different post that said not to go above 35 watts for the HL or it can kill ur stator . . . . so I immediately went and took out the 45 watt HL bulb I had in there. Lights came back on at normal brightness, however now the bike will not start.  :'(. It'll crank, but won't turn over. Back to the basics. Gonna replace spark plug, charge battery, however I'm scared that I've ruined the stator and will need a new one.

nice pic  :). I feel stupid, I forgot that the bulbs are dual filament and put the old ones back in instead of the new ones  ::). So the taillight filament was also blown in both bulbs. Once I replaced the bulbs, the taillight came right back on, but still no brake light. Discovered there is a short at the brake switch in the connector, once I bent them a certain way the front brake came back on.

However the lights will dim as I ride, almost to the point that you can't see the brake/tail lights. I tested the battery and the reading were good, so I think it might be the stator. Still gonna do all the things I mentioned in the previous post and test the stator.

 >:( arrrgggg. I put my bike back together, took it outside and started it up and light came on and went back out. I'm gonna check my battery and make sure it is charging properly and check the stator. I've already replace the voltage regulator. So I know that's not the problem. If those are fine then I going to replace the 2 wires in the pic and see if that helps.

I'm in Lexington, KY and our college team beat our biggest rival to head into the ncaa championship game. Since we are in a college town, after a big win everyone floods the street and outrageousness insues. Here are some examples, so you can understand the craziness going on last night.

HAHAHAHA!  ;D Nope I'm in KY, but nobody knows it cuz I have no accent (even the natives). All that's left electrically is the cdi, oil light and tail light. Got the bulbs on order and need to order the cdi.

Next mini project will be the oil tank/carb. Gotta leak somewhere cuz the oil tank, fuel filter and oil pump are covered in soot.

. . .and GO CATS! The town's gonna be burned down by tom. morning, guess it's a good thing my scooter in inside tonight!

I use this website (http://tinypic.com), when I post pics, cuz it will size the pic specifically for a message board/forum. However it made the pics really big.

Got a new bulbs and I have a taillight again. Woot! But I think re-wrapping all these wires it gonna take longer than it did to find the problem.

Eureka!! I've found the problem for the brake light. There is a short in one of the wires going to the battery. Still no tailight, but I think the bulb I have is bad. Gonna buy a new one tomorrow and see if it works.

If you look closely there is a break in the yellow wire and also in the blue wire near the top left corner. One of these is the culprit, because once I play around with them my brake light worked fine.

I got the bike apart in my living room and an reading the manual as much as possible (mainly to figure out what I'm looking at). I've checked all the wires in the back and they all look fine. It's hard checking the one's in the front, because they're all wrapped up and I have to cut all that off to see them. I do that tomorrow. I went ahead and ordered a voltage regulator (just waiting to receive it), hopefully that will help also. I also take it outside and give it a nice scrub down. Will have more info tomorrow once I get started.

I have no tail light at all and the back brake light will not work 90% of the time. I did get it for work for a bit and then it stopped working again. The front brake light works, but I have to pull the handle really hard for it to light.

Thank for the info guys. However I've got bad news. I bought new tail and brake lights (cuz one of my brake light went out too) and replaced them and I've still got no tail light or back brake light. There has to be a short somewhere and I'm not very electrically inclined. It's depressing and motivating at the same time.

Please let me know if I am breaking any forum rules by posting a link to a vid (but I think this link has been posted on here before)

I'm also a newbie and this video has helped me A LOT with the understand the cvt, how it works and how to repair/clean it. I almost felt like a pro after watching it. ;D

Hello All,

I've been out of commission with oral surgery and horrible KY weather (literally tornado weather, snowstorms and 60 degree sunshine in 5 days). Finally the weather is clearing up and I can get back to working on my bike.

I think my CDI is going bad. My bike acted up a while ago and I let it sit for about a month and now it is running fine again. When my CDI went bad before it did the same thing. Found a performance cdi on ebay for 19.95 with free s/h from a shop recommended on here previously. I can just buy this thing and plug it up or are there any adjustments I need to make to my bike for it?

Also it is time for new front brake pads. Since I plan to add upgrades, what type of brakes should I be looking into. I use my bike for regular commuting and would like to be able to go around 60-65ish.

I took apart the instrument panel to replace the oil light bulb and this is what I discovered

The oil light is attached to the wires ??? How do I replace this? Do I have to replace the entire instrument panel? The manual only says replace the bulb.

Last question (for now  ;D), now my tail light is out. The manual says I need 3 bulbs, but I think that is for the euro lighting. I know I need a double filament bulb, but I don't know what type of bulb to get.

So sorry to hear about the bike. My was stolen too (I actually got it back, not the cops). Unfortunately the  girl who was riding it, went to court and the prosecutor attorney assumed that it was not damaged because I rode it home and only made her do community service (No restitution!) I was pissed. They never contacted me or anything. I'm still repairing the bike from when it was stolen.

Make sure you head to the courthouse and see when the jerks who had it go to court and make sure they have all your contact info!!

Aww, I remember the older pics when they were originally posted (very inspiring to make me want to get mine fixed up). What remaining boxed parts do you have?
