Agility 50 / How much heat is normal on transmission cover...?
« on: June 21, 2010, 02:57:35 PM »
After riding my scoot a good bit, the transmission cover gets pretty hot.  I know that  "hot" is a subjective term... the only way I can quantify how hot is to say that when I touch the cover, it is uncomfortably hot, but not so hot that I can't keep my hand there.  It's been this way since day one...

Is it normal for the transmission to heat up like this?  I'm guessing so, but just want to be sure that nothing is amiss... Thanks!

Have trust in little scoot it will go whatever your destination will be ...don't forget to put gas in tank and that's it ...:)

Very well said...  So far, my scoot feels almost bulletproof, and seems to be willing to go as far a I am willing to ride.

Sometimes I just get on my scoot and ride country roads, without any particular destination in mind.  I put over a hundred miles on it one afternoon.

Agility 50 / Re: Tweaking the top end (more "sustain")

Thanks for the replies!

I'm not really unhappy with my scoot's performance, especially in light of the fact that I had to spend only about 30 bucks to get it where it is.  I'm still open to air cleaner/main jet mods as these are inexpensive too, but I really don't want to commit to big bore kits, larger carbs, or performance exhausts simply because of the expense.

I was already thinking that there was a limited amount of performance to be had from a 49cc engine...

Agility 50 / Tweaking the top end (more "sustain")
« on: June 13, 2010, 12:40:18 PM »
Hey all!

I've got just over 400 miles on my scoot, and I'm pleased as punch with the 22 bucks worth of transmission mods I installed. The scooter's top speed is fine.  According to the speedo, it'll pull 51 down a hill, 45-47 on a long, flat stretch, and 40 up a slight grade. I don't know how accurate the speedo is, but no matter- the scoot keeps up with the city traffic I drive in, and I'm not looking to gain any more top speed.

Acceleration 0-30 is great, but where I'd like a little more umph is from 35 mph on up.  I'm not looking for anything spectacular, but if I could tweak the top end to have a little more grunt (not speed), I would truly be happy with the scoot's performance.  Feels like I just need a little more "sustain" at higher speeds.

I've cut the CDI, replaced the boss drive, and I'm using 5 gram rollers with stock fly springs and stock main torque drive spring.  I really feel like the transmission is dialed in for the riding I do, and that if I could tweak the engine to get just a little more out of it I would have a great combination going on.  I'm thinking a K&N air filter, and larger main jet (85) would help...

Any thoughts or suggestions?  I wouldn't be opposed to different roller weights or a stiffer torque spring, but as I said, it feels to me like the transmission is pretty well dialed in.

Thanks!

Hello all.  I am in the process of some of these same mods. I ordered 5.5 gram sliders, main 1500 torque spring, 1000 torque spring, and a set of three different strength fly springs and should be arriving this week.  I am hoping to have the same result.  I am a little worried about losing the top end speed with these stiffer springs and lighter sliders.  The stock roller weight is 6.5 gram.  I will be using the mid range stiffness springs and either 1500 or 1000 torque spring...What do you think?  Will I be losing top end speed for the better acceleration?

So many different combos...I am overwhelmed.  HELP!

I haven't even made any changes to the clutch springs and am still happy with the results- good acceleration and top speed of about 49 mph (according to the speedo anyway, but still a 15 mph gain over stock).  Since you're going to have springs of varying stiffness, including the stock springs, you'll have plenty of options to tweak your scooter just the way you want it.  I'd replace the stock rollers, and see how they work with the stock springs...  Then start with the lighter springs, working your way up until you either maximize performance, or reach the point of diminishing returns.  If you don't mind, let us know what springs you decide to use and what the results were using the springs you don't use.  Good luck!

...the riser i installed made the handling better..

..makes me wonder what another 1/2" would do...

..but that's another thread....

Could you tell me a little more about the riser?  One thing about these smaller, lighter scoots is that they can get a little sketchy when you get 'em going upwards of 50 mph...  An increase in handling characteristics would certainly compliment the increase in speed!  It seems like stepping up an inch in tire size would help keep things stable at higher speeds.

Well, my parts came in as expected, and I got them installed.  I had a little trouble getting the nut off the variator because I don't have an impact wrench, so I used a strap wrench to hold the gear that the starter engages... A minute later the nut was free.

What a difference!  There is a significant improvement in accleration, from take off all the way through top end, which is about 49 mph... this is what the speedometer reads, I have no idea how accurate it is.  Regardless, the speedo read 34 mph stock, and now reads 49 on a flat stretch.  That's a gain of 15 mph by cutting the CDI, replacing the stock variator bushing with an unrestricted one, and replacing the stock (6.5 gram?) rollers with 5 gram rollers.  I spent a total of $22.86, plus about $12.00 for the strap wrench.

And about 90% of the information I needed to do this I found on this forum... Many thanks!

Yep, nothing like a moment of clarity!

I'm hoping my bushing and rollers (5 gram) will be here Saturday- they've been shipped, and were in Tampa, FL as of 10:38 PM yesterday.  I'm really excited about this, and can't wait to see the difference these mods make!

Got it!  After reading your replies, I also watched a few more videos...  Now I understand the balance between the variator and the clutch, and the relationship between the roller weights and the springs.

With lighter rollers there is less pressure forcing the belt outward. This means  higher rpms to get the same gear ratio.  The idea is to balance the weight of the rollers with the stiffness of the springs to keep the engine in the optimal rpm range...

Thanks!

Agility 50 / Relationship between roller weight and spring stiffness?
« on: June 04, 2010, 03:27:54 AM »
I understand that tuning a CVT is about taking the engine's power and efficiently putting it to the drive wheel, but I'm having a bit of trouble with a couple of concepts...

What effect does roller weight have on acceleration, and how does it relate to the stiffness of the clutch springs?

I know that stiffer fly clutch springs require higher rpms before they'll allow the clutch to engage (centrifugal force at work here)... But I'm having a hard time visualizing what the main drive spring is doing- I just know that it has to do with the top end "gear".

I thought I had a grasp on roller weight until I started poking around on Enviro-Moto's website and found this:

"Make sure your adjust your variator weights accordingly. when tuning your transmission the general rule is, heavier springs require heavier rollers"

I thought better accleration was acheived by using lighter weights with stiffer springs.  Now I'm just confused!

Yeah, it rained pretty heavy all day long, with intermittent breaks.  I got soaked!

Sorry to hear that, man.  Admittedly, it could have been me on many a night.

I let my insurance lapse, then got caught driving without it.  Now I have to maintain SR-22, even though I sold my car.  Additionally, I owe about a grand in personal property taxes on a new Accord I had back in 2003 (plus fines and penalties).  To make a long story short, it would cost me more money than I currently have just to keep an old beater on the road, so I decided to ride a scooter for a while.

It can't be taken away (paid in full), I don't have to insure it, and I don't need a license to drive it.  And did I mention that it's FUN?

What do you do when it rains?  Do you have rain gear?

It's an Agilty before the mods... It's a Guilty after the mods!   ;D

Lol, a recent search revealed this:

"Aug 29, 2009 ... And Kymco already had their own example of unfortunate logo typography: the Agility, which a recent Craigslist seller listed as a "Guilty" because he couldn't read the logo."

from here: http://2strokebuzz.com/2009/08/29/kymco-yager-gt200i-pocphils-review

(Major thread derail!)

I even Googled Kymco "Guilty",

...lmao...

 ;D :D :) :D ;D

...no...you didn...lmfao...

Yes, I actually did...  I mean, I didn't really think it was called a "Guilty" but I'd seen one in passing, and couldn't make out what the badging actually read.  So, I Googled what was in my mind's eye, hoping that Google would offer a suggestion: "Did you mean...".
