According to Bloomberg, a gallon of gasoline in the UK costs $5.97 per gallon, and here in San Diego, I'm paying about $4.25 per gallon...….so more like a $1.72/gallon more, which is ~40% (as opposed to 500%).

https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/gas-prices/#20193:United-Kingdom:USD:g

I'm not sure that that changes your fundamental premise, about the popularity of scooters in the UK, but it might perhaps possibly have more to do with weather/climate/etc than the price of gasoline.

My 2012 Kymco Like 200i scooter with 3266 miles is now offered for sale on Craigslist in San Diego. It is propelled by a four-stroke, 160 cc, 11.3 Hp @ 7,250 RPM and 2.8 Ft. Lbs. @ 5,500 RPM electronic fuel injected engine mated on a CVT automatic transmission, with a top speed of 59 mph. The engine has enough punch to ride easily in city traffic while being tuned for maximum efficiency.

This Paddy Yellow Kymco offers both generous under seat storage locker and a color-matched top lockbox; it also has a glovebox for stowing the garage-door opener, equipped with a 12V port for charging your phone. A secure mount on the left handlebar secures your phone (directions and GPS-speed).

This Kymco soaks up the bumps around town, since the Kymco Like 200i is equipped with front telescopic forks and rear dual shocks, the latter being adjustable. The fuel tank holds 1.6 gallons, with an estimated fuel economy of 85 mpg, providing a range of ~136 miles. The brown leather seat fits two riders, with pop-out foot pegs for the passenger, along with a grabrail, and back-support from the lock box.

The Kymco Like 200i runs perfectly, is clean, garaged, well-kept, reliable, and its service records are on Craigslist.

How many miles on the scooter?

7 years ? - yeah that belt could stand to be renewed just from age - as do the tires, to be on the safe side.

A lot of work on your part - but could get it done for maybe $225. +/-

How many miles you have on the scooter (ie. does it need valves checked, brake pads replaced, brake fluid replaced, air filter, spark plug, fluid changes - ?)

Stig

Thanks. I agree that replacing the tires and belt based on age is prudent.

It has 1750 miles on it.

I now ride it about 125 miles per month and have had it for four months.

No, I haven't yet checked the valves, or replaced the pads or brake fluid, but have replaced the air filter, plug, PCV valve, and fluids myself.

Would I better off selling this scooter and replacing it with a brand-new 2018 Like 200i from a dealer for $2k, rather than investing in new rubber?

probably better expect an hour of shop time....Or check price of package deal if you buy from dealer......Pretty sure I  paid more for the labor than the tires.

My local indepdent shop is charging $65 each for the tires (probably from Amazon) and $100 each to change the tires, so like Stig suggested, the labor will cost more than the tires themselves.  Basically, $330 to replace the stock OEM tires with Michelin City Grip tires.

He said he'd replace the drive belt at the same time for $150 (parts & labor).

Spending $480 on a 7 year old Like 200i to replace the tires and drive belt seems too expensive, doesn't it?  While I love my scotter, it's probably got a blue blook value of $1000 (tops), so to spend 50% of it's value on tires and a drive belt doesn't appear to make economic sense IMHO.

Thoughts?

order a set of Michelin City Grips - Stig

Thanks, Stig.  I see the prices of the Michelin's on Amazon, but what's a fair price for a shop to change the rubber on the rim?  Is balancing included?

Turns out we need the longer model, which is available on Amazon for about $10 USD, plus some rubber washers:

Is it possible to replace the existing front fender storage box lock set (P/N 75581) on my Like 200i with a push-button release? While I appreciate that a lot of folks like the storage box's locking feature, I'd personally like to throw my phone, garage door opener, and house keys in there, and be able to access them while the engine is running - which I can't do now, because I'm forced to turn off the ignition and use the key to open the storage box.

Is it possible to remove the lock-set without doing damage to the plastic door?

If so, is there another model of Kymco that uses a push-button, instead of the lock?  If so, perhaps I could order that push-button part and swap the two pieces?

Thanks!
