The Volar brand off of Amazon.com seems good so far.

I put about 6000 miles on them and they are still working fine.  But the only reason I got them was because of low price.  Kymco parts do tend to be overpriced but not really any better IMO.  Parts labeled as "GY6" or "universal Chinese scooter GY6" etc. tend to be cheaper and more plentiful.  The OEM parts are harder to find but apparently not any better than the cheaper stuff in most cases.   

I don't know about air filters.  If an after market exists that is cheaper I'd like to know.

On my People S 250 I replaced the mechanical seal in my water pump and my oil seal just behind it.  Changed the oil, gave it a test run around the block for 15 minutes which overheated it so I immediately turned it off and burped the coolant.

But now as I idle it for 10 minutes, the oil pressure light comes on, flickering.  I know there's enough oil in there and I even put in a bit more, likely too much, just to test it and I get the same result the second time.  I see no smoke coming from the exhaust or evidence of mixing of coolant/oil which was my first thought having just replaced the seals. 

Update: 7 hours later the issue isn't repeating.  I ran it for 15 minutes.  It must have been caused by coolant shortening wiring during burping of the system.  I don't see why that would trigger the oil pressure warning after ten minutes of idling, but the only thing different from before is the coolant should have dried up by now.

I've tried pulling and prying out the metal part of the mechanical seal from the water pump on my People S 250 for 2 hours now and it hasn't budged at all.  Is there a trick to this or a special tool?  Only one video on youtube shows someone replacing this and they skip over the part where they somehow pulled it out with pliers.

Referring to this Youtube video, I am about to modify my new starter for my People S 250 because the previous one broke/shattered a bushing.  I was getting a smoking battery instantly when pressing the start button and when bench testing it, it was deader than a door nail.

Basically in this video the youtuber recommends retrofitting an o-ring to the armature by filing a groove into it, to prevent oil seeping inside.  Then he recommends drilling a small drainage hole on the bottom to release oil that gets into the starter.  What are your thoughts on this?  Do the starters really need this mod to last long?

On a side note I am not sure what caused the starter to break but as I replace it I want to ensure it doesn't fail on me again and leave me stranded somewhere.

Solved:  the leak actually came from the hose going from the radiator to the overflow jug.  It was the spring clamp that wasn't tight enough.  I found it by feel, noticing it was not hard to pull the hose out.  I replaced it with a screw-tightened Harbor Freight automotive clamp.  From now on I will never trust those OEM spring clamps after reassembling plumbing.

I had a hard time finding the feeler guage for my people s 250 even in Cleveland, so it might save you time and trouble buying the right one here on Amazon:

Based on youtube videos I watched, it wasn't hard.  I didn't replace the valve cover gasket but I applied high temperature RTV silicone over it as a YouTuber recommended.  After about 800 miles it is running well.

I encourage you to DIY.  My mechanic quoted 2000-3000$ for an engine rebuild which got me into this..

People 250 / Small coolant leak from hose?

I found a very small coolant leak happening from this hose pictured below.  The hose appears to be coming from the bottom of the fuel pump.  I find that hard to believe, but it's my orange coolant for sure.  I cannot find it identified in the manual which appears to be for a slightly different model.

Is it normal that I should have to refill my overflow reservoir every 3 weeks just to keep it from going down to E, when the coolant all seems to be dripping out of this hose?

Thanks.  Since that y hose goes to the evaporative system, it narrowed it down enough for me to get it going.  It's running well now.  I put 50 miles on it ranging from around 25-65 mph. 

It makes a rattling/ticking noise only while idling and with any throttling the sound goes away.  I don't think that noise was there when I test ran it with no exhaust/panels installed. 

I wasn't expecting a knock - I adjusted the valve clearance to the manual specs, and checked oil level.  The crankshaft bearing seemed solid, without any play.  I wonder above all, can it be serious if the noise is only there when idling?

Thanks!  That got it running (only for a healthy sounding 20 seconds). I didn't realize a finger tight torque on the battery terminals wouldn't have been good enough.

What is the hose terminating at each side of the fuel tank at filter-looking things, with a Y split in the middle, and where does that Y split connect?  My instruction manual does not seem to account for that hose or the "filters."  I should have taken photos before dissasembling and not relied on my manual.

Ok, I found the piston and cylinder scored.  I replaced those.  The bearing rod had virtually no play and turning the engine produced no noise so it seems that a top end rebuild should do the trick.

As I attempt to start it again, on the main kickstand (rear wheel in air) I have an electrical issue.  When the battery is connected, the "met-in" latch light goes on as normal.  The gauges move when I turn the key- normal also.  But when I press the button, I only hear a click coming from the battery area, somewhere just to the right, and the whole dashboard dies/lights go out.  Only when I disconnect then reconnect the battery, it lights up again.

I have no taillights, muffler, rear brake pads, or air filter installed yet, if that matters.  Is there some breaker being tripped?

The engine is on the table now.  How do you turn the A.C. generator flywheel?  The instructions tell you to turn it to set the timing, but it apparently doesn't move by hand.  Is there something else I need to do other than just grab it and "turn" it after I've removed the cylinder head cover?

Regarding parts cost:  I found a complete engine rebuild kit for under 500$ that includes cam shaft and bearings, cylinder, piston, gaskets, and o-rings.  I'll still take a look at the engine first.

TL;DNR version of original post:  the engine turns but makes a compression of only 25PSI.  The cause was the loose oil drainage bolt falling out during riding.

Ok so I finally tested the compression.  It's 25 psi.  I called a dealer and he said that means the engine definitely needs to be rebuilt.

Since I'll be disassembling it myself now (why not at this point) I am considering replacing the engine myself if I can find one, as an alternative to just buying a new bike. Is this engine used in other models, so that if I can find one it would be a fittable swap?
