General Discussion / Re: Scooter rider surrenders to Mother Nature

A thick layer of leaves can starve your grass of sunlight and cause it to die.

Stig

True, but I have no grass.  Ripped it out after moving in.  Don’t even have a lawn mower.  Hated mowing as a kid, had no intention of doing it w my own house.

I let fallen leaves stay put and let Mother Nature do her recycling magic.  Better for the soil, flora and fauna, easier for me, and I prefer the look.  Prefer the yard to look like a state park vs a golf course fairway. Plus it seems more environmentally friendly.

But maybe I’m just lazy and trying to justify it.

General Discussion / Re: NSR: operating squirrel condo - Question randyo
« on: October 28, 2024, 12:31:16 PM »
Several years ago I was up in a tree, pruning dead limbs. A bunch of sticks and leaves had accumulated in the fork of branches, so I started shaking the tree to get them out.

As you’ve probably guessed, turns out it was a squirrel’s nest, and the next thing I know there’s a baby squirrel hanging by one arm from a branch right in front of me. The look on his face said “ what are you doing, man?  I wasn’t doing anything to you!”

Feeling awful, I took a twig, got him to grab it, put him back in the nest and quickly climbed down. Within a minute the mom came frantically through the treetops, picked up her baby and raced off to get away from the madman.

Since then I can’t help but appreciate squirrels. The expression on that little guys face!  And they’ve gotta be one of the most acrobatic, athletic creatures on the planet.

Although some once moved into the attic when I dilly-dallied on a house repair rearranging some insulation along waking us up numerous nights. Their persistence is impressive, as it was a battle to keep them out.

Hope you guys don’t intentionally kill any, enough get flattened on the roads as it is.

Too bad the youth wouldn't see the practicality of scooters for city travel and adventure travel.
Dean

And at a time when they are more open to and in need of less expensive, lighter carbon footprint vehicles.

General Discussion / Re: NSR: how do you make coffee?
« on: October 28, 2024, 11:42:33 AM »
At 5 yrs old, took a sip of my mom’s Maxwell House.  Black.  Never drank coffee again.  Still don’t like the smell.  Recently discovered Yerba mate and guayausa, they are my morning drinks now. On kratom off days, anyway.

That oughta get some google searches going.

I’ll do that, although a tech at Bando and rep at Partsforscooters both said the belts are not unidirectional.

The Bando tech also suspected a worn out pulley, as the scoot has 33,000 miles and mpg had dropped 15% in recent months.

Does 33k miles sound like a reasonable lifespan for a pulley?  And does the variation need to be changed as well?

Direction does matter.
Stig

That could explain the premature breaking. No arrows or any other indication of direction, only size info on the outside of the belt. How do you know which way to install?

It’s a Bando made in Japan, Ruffus.  Don’t have the sleeve anymore.
Direction of installation does not matter, does it?

It’s not a Kymco, it’s a Lance (made by SYM)

:-[ Yes, 3 belts broke.  Was hoping no one would pick up on that.  Should’ve known better w this crew.

The first one I was a couple rides from changing it.  No excuse, pushed it too far. The second was also my error, didn’t know then that the first belt gets 10-15% more than subsequent belts, so I was expecting 14,000.  But this one is perplexing and a bit aggravating, especially as I waited over 4 ½ hrs for roadside assistance (Progessive, always been good before).  As the initial ETA was 45 minutes, that 4 ½ hrs seemed that much longer.  10 miles from home, coulda walked it.

I do check and measure the belt every couple thousand miles, as well as keeping close tabs on mpg.  Seems to drop when the belt needs replacing. Maybe cause it’s stretched?

Oh yeah, had left the house at 8:30 am for dentist appointment, ate nothing since I expected to be home by 10:30.  Ended up being 4:30 before I ate.

Looking into a carrier to put on wife’s car…

1st belt lasted 14,400 miles.
2nd belt lasted 12,400 miles.
3rd belt broke at 6,000 miles.

All the same oem belts.
Manual recommends 12,000 mile change.

Any guesses as to the cause?
Age of belt is only thing I can think of (don’t know the age)

General Discussion / Re: Malossi Store Site
« on: September 09, 2024, 10:29:44 AM »
Just checked the Malossi site, the price listed for the air filter I recently ordered from a US company was higher, plus an even higher shipping cost (which is understandable).

Odd that a made in Italy product cost less from a US distributor than the manufacturer itself.

Understandable to discourage driving solo in 4 wheel vehicles.  But not so on two wheels, that should be encouraged.

Just seeing the thread title was sad, knew what it meant.

Can’t say anything better than what’s already been said, except to add losing a mentor always leaves a void.  Even if some of the time I had no idea what you were talking about, due to your advanced mechanical knowledge.

If weight of your bikes is the problem, an e-bike might be a solution. But if your balance is suspect, then probably not, as you’d be higher up (further to fall) on skinnier tires.

and it's red! I always wished my black S200 was red, instead. For simplicity and reliability, yes, the S200. The sexy GT200I adds electronics, water pump, radiator, thermostat, temp sensors, coolant hoses, etc.....

Right, forgot about that.  Was thinking not only about the complexity of the GT, but the overkill of power for campground cruising.

I always find it interesting that in other areas ethanol free fuel is NOT available...yet here in Iowa, home of corn (majority of corn in state is grown for ethanol, 2nd largest use is animal feed..) EVERY pump I ever see offers an ethanol free option! Do Iowans know something others don't?  8)

Was going to make a similar comment.
In the meantime, recently talked to a motorhead into race cars, he was adamant e-85 would be better for engines and the environment.  When I asked about trading food for oil, he said that’s a myth, we could easily grow enough corn to supply the country w e-85.

Adding to the confusion…
