I'm glad to hear that Mike is going to work to make this right.  They are really a great dealer in the area.

Whenever I check my oil levels, it's always screwed in.  Generally I like to make sure the engine is a little warm prior to checking though.  Doing the initial prep on tclock is usually enough time for the engine oil to warm up.

Do a plug chop and check the carmelization on the top... if it's white, then you are running too lean and may need an upjet if the air/fuel mix is pegged out.  If it's black or wet, then you need to increase the airflow or dail down the air/fuel mix on the carb.  If the color is close to a nice capiccino, your solid and don't need to change much of anything.  Another thing to check is the needles on the carb... it's possible there's debris in there causing the idle jet to letting through too much fuel on down throttle.

Accel wise... I find the X500 a little weak off the line (stock build) in comparison to other 500cc scooters... however, once it has a little bit of a bite to the pavement and the rpms hit about 3.7k, it will keep up with the other 500cc scooters just fine.  Need more grunt off the line, try stepping down to a 28gr roller/slider and see if that doesn't increase the pep.

I'm glad I can help.  Mike is the main guy over there at Scooter World (http://www.scooterworldkc.com/).  His contact information is directly on the site.  I believe I will see him tomorrow at the Slow & Low CC ride here in KC.  I'll talk to him privately and point this information his way.  The same issue happening three times in a row within very low miles means there is something else wrong with the scooter further up in the wiring somewhere.  The best thing Scooter World can do for you would be to replace the scooter under warranty through the lemon law.  You will end up a happy customer, they will have a done good by the customer, and Kymco will look better for taking the time to resolve the ultimate issue.  The hard part, you have to be the one to put up with it possibly a few times.

Here's what I would do.  Take the scooter in and have the process done.  After repairs are completed, run the dickens out of it the same day you pick it up.  Rinse and repeat a few times.  If the scooter fails for the same reason over and over, the repairs are not being made... the constant repair will eventually raise a red flag up the corporate chain and dealings will be done to make sure you are taken care of.  When the lights go out, take the scooter directly to the shop.  In the mean time, talk with Mike over at the shop... ask to get information of regional dealership management contact.  Be cool about it, I'm sure Mike will do everything in his power to help.  I wish you all the luck on getting this resolved, I'll help where I can... but ultimately it needs to come directly from you to make things happen.

Oh yeah, the local group in greater Kansas City... http://www.kcscooterriders.com/

That's a strange one to me.  Do you have the work logs of what exactly has been done in the process of warranty repairs?  Are there any blown fuses perhaps?  If it's still under warranty, talk with Mike to see if they can get an authorization to change out the scooter for replacement.  Can you give better details of when the dash goes out?  Does this happen when riding, stopped, accelerating, braking?  When this happens, are there any fuses that need to be replaced, or is it just shot until the converter is replaced?  To me this sounds like a bad wire harness somewhere, but I'm no expert on the topic.

People 250 / Re: Vehicle's Tailgating too close?
« on: April 05, 2011, 01:18:07 AM »
The best recommendation for those that tailgate is to slow down.  When you slow down, you give yourself more room in front of you as well as more reaction time for the person tailgating you.  It's pretty heavily detailed at MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation).  If it's someone I know that's tailgating me, I usually tell them why it's bad, then proceed to share the information about how they like tailgating with all their friends... the peer pressure really hits home good.  If it's someone I don't know, and I'm first in line at the light... I'll kill the engine to make them think it stalled.  The best thing to do, let them pass (while giving them your single digit phone number).

General Discussion / Re: Air Filters: Replace Or Clean?

I know what you mean Syl... but I've done them many times and use good equipment to make such pieces work correctly.  I've been in the custom vehicle business for quite some time now.  Go have a look at some of the stuff my friend EZBake has made.  I just have to explain what I'm after, and viola... 1-off custom work.

The Like reminds me of the People I had.  Very similar mount points on the tupperware.  To get all of the plastics off the front of the bike I had to remove the floor panels, glove box, lower fender pieces before I could get to the upper portions where the lights were.  There's a ton of stuff to take off before you can get into that section.  If you could find a shop manual on the People, I'm sure it would get you started in the right direction.

I'd take pictures, but I don't have my People anymore.

I hear that Sissy... 90 degrees out with 35mph winds in the midwest.  Just did 250 miles today... thought I had to lean the bike over the entire way on the straight flats.

What I would do is go ahead and clean it (carefully).  Just in case, get another air filter to have it on hand.  Once you do replace it, look into making your own K&N filter.

It's a matter of picking up a flat K&N filter, then cutting out the paper section of your old filter, cut the K&N mesh to the same size and fit in place.  Use a high bonding plastic cement to weld the new mesh in place to the filter housing.  The results are better airflow, and you won't have to replace your filter for a very long time (only clean it every oil change).

General Discussion / Re: 2 stroke vs 4 stroke

Just wanted to emphasize a few things in this thread.

Science Fact:  You can get a LOT more power out of a 2 stroke with a big bore kit - No replacement for displacement.

You can do the fun de-restricting stuff, then you can do some small tapping in the flow of the system by changing out the exhaust (already accomplished) and intake.  From there, look into changing the variator, rollers, clutch, belt.  A 50cc 4T you are looking to max out closer to 63 roughly.  You may be able to push the top end replacing the rollers, but then you could adversely effect the accel to get to the top end.

Welcome to the forum btw.

General Discussion / Re: After market exhaust without rejet/upjet
« on: March 30, 2011, 12:55:12 PM »
The top end increased a good 5mph but the real difference was in the acceleration.  The take off was much faster and throttle response felt quicker.  I was going to dive into the variator/rollers, belt, clutch next... but I went up in CCs instead.
