I like the K&N KN-147 mainly because you can put a wrench on it from underneath.

When it comes to battery issue, I removed 12v 100ah battery from my Toyota Hilux and tried to jumpstart, cranked slowly and killed that battery  too rapidly..

That sounds like a bad starter to me.  I've read about Xciting cold start issues, but I keep mine garaged and it's always over 50F in there.  If I don't run it for a while, it cranks slowly but hasn't failed yet.

I took off the backrest and strapped a firm foam pad under an ATV seat protector (both available at Walmart).  This is now probably the most comfortable bike or scooter I've owned.  I'm also fairly tall and raising the seat helped.  I also keep the windshield in the lower position for better air flow and less buffeting.  The windshield was yellow from age (it looked like a big toenail), so I painted the inside of it black.  At the time I had it taken apart for a belt change.  Last week I changed the rear tire.  I'm really enjoying this scooter.

General Discussion / Re: What do you use your scooter for?
« on: October 07, 2019, 12:05:43 PM »
I mostly stay in town on my Xciting 500, but my town's spread out with lots of open road.  I've had many large motorcycles over the years and enjoyed taking long day rides, but I've lost interest in that.  I found myself taking shorter and shorter rides, but wasn't ready to give up motorcycling entirely.  First, I got a Honda PCX 150 and it was fun for a while, but too small.  My Xciting is much better.  It'll easily cruise at 55-60 mph (about as fast as I want to go) and it's very comfortable the way I have it set up.  I use it for errands more than I did with my bigger motorcycles.  It's very dependable...you just get on and go!

I have an 08 carbureted one with about 15,000 miles.  It runs great and I'm not going to worry about the camshaft until it becomes a problem, and I'll probably run it until it dies.  I wonder what the symptoms of a worn cam are.  I sure don't want to take my scooter apart to see what shape my cam's in.

I'm still thinking you need to buy a Kymco instrument panel.  I don't think they were made to be repaired, just replaced...Remove and Replace.  It would probably be cheaper than taking it to a mechanic and it should just plug right in.  If your scooter's doing everything else properly and your wiring harness is in good shape, there's not much else to rule out.  We don't have any mechanical or safety inspections around here, but I remember how strict some of the European inspections were.

That’s strange. Xciting speedometers have a reputation for being close to accurate. I believe about 5% is typical.

Maybe I have an Xciting 250 speedometer in it.  I bought the scooter used.

I think some people give up on solving their problems, like this guy.  I'm thinking of taking a trailer over and checking it out.

The ad didn't last long.  It was a red 2009 500RI with wiring problems and being sold as parts for $200.

My speedometer's way off, like about 25% optimistic, and that's with the correct size tire up front.  If I divide the KPH reading by two, I get an accurate MPH reading.  I'm eventually going to get a new speedometer (the LCD clock and odometer are going out), but I don't know if it'll make much difference on the speed accuracy.  My odometer is about 8% optimistic.

I bought a 2008 carbed version for $1400 in February.  My LCD odometer and clock are shot and I had to change the left turn signal switch.  A new meter assembly will cost about $193 and shouldn't be difficult to replace.  I was kind of skeptical about buying a Chinese (actually Taiwanese) scooter, but read that Kymco's are pretty reliable.  I'm enjoying this scooter and prefer to keep it under 65 mph.  The previous owner maintained it pretty well and it's been reliable so far.  I keep it garaged, so I haven't had any cold start problems.  I'm about 6 feet tall so I took off the backrest pad, put on a memory foam car-seat cushion strapped down with an ATV seat pad (both available at Walmart) and it's now pretty comfortable.

Yep, it's much cheaper to check the battery and all the wiring before you buy any expensive parts.  I live in a very dry climate, so I usually don't have much corrosion or wiring harness problems.  That meter costs about $193 US.  If that's your only problem with the scooter and you get good power to your lights and all, I'll bet it's the meter.  Can you make the trip without the speedometer or do you have to get the scooter inspected before the trip?  A GPS speedometer app might be a solution.

I'm starting to think you need a new speedometer assembly.  Maybe something's gone haywire within the panel.  You live in a very hot climate, and that may have an effect on electronic devices.  My LCD odometer and clock are shot after 10 years and 15,000 miles in the desert.

While we're on the subject of instruments, how accurate are all your speedometers?  Mine's way off even with the proper-sized front tire.  To get correct speed, I divide the KPH reading (you can hardly see the MPH numbers) by two, and come up with a fairly accurate MPH.  120 KPH indicated is actually about 100 KPH actual. I'm used to converting KM to Miles, so it's not a real problem.  I haven't really checked the accuracy of my odometer.  It's difficult when you can hardly read the LCD display.

Bad electrical connections or grounding can often cause strange things to happen.  My next major purchase will be a new speedometer ($193.00).  The LCD odometer and clock don't work right anymore.  It's nothing serious, but I like things to work right.

Xciting 500 / Re: Original belt and rollers
« on: April 28, 2019, 12:04:39 PM »
I have a new Kymco belt on the way.  This week I pulled the covers on my new to me 2008 with 13000 miles to see how it looked under there.  My belt is slightly under the service limit of 27.9 mm but still looks in good shape.  I also built a variator tool so I'll be ready when the belt comes.  I'll check the rollers when I get it apart.  I probably should have ordered those too.  I also ordered a left switch and a few routine maintenace parts.  Also found a pdf service manual on line.  My next project will be to replace the windshield with a Givi.  The original one looks like it has toenail fungus.
