People 150 / Re: Winter Customization Project
« on: March 08, 2011, 01:11:35 AM »
The powdercoating of the wheels, transmission cover, and muffler shield are done. The finish of the wheels made the color have a little more orange peel than I'd like but otherwise it came out fine.

The body panels are so cheap, I bought a tan front panel to give the bike contrast. In the light of the service area, it seemed O.K.

The LED marker lights really mounted cleanly, give the scoot some well-needed visibility, and draw almost no power.

RAM mounts for the GPS and iPhone are on.

Shocks are on.
--
Pending: A brighter headlight is being put in. The LED driving lights and windshield have been put on hold due to some unexpected expenses. Color-matched brake hoses will likely be a next-season project.
--
Dead-ends: Whitewall tires just don't exist in People's tire size. Caliper upgrades aren't out there. There's no way to fix the speedometer.
--
Next season: The scooter goes to Scooterworks Chicago for some badly needed engine hop-up work. Or I just buy a used maxi-scooter. See you on the road!

This is slightly off topic but does the weight of rider affect top speed? I would certainly expect it with acceleration but not with top speed aside from its effect on rolling friction.

This is based on what I vaguely remember from physics classes taken a long, long time ago.  :D

Rianna, I don't want to burst anyone's bubble but if you get onto a vehicle cranking out 14 BHP, don't be surprised if your heart can't pump blood to your extremities.

When you're on your deathbed, I'm not sure if your scooter had 13.1 or 13.7 HP will make any difference.

If not colorful adjectives, you'll likely question the marital status of the parents of the people who designed the horn recess on your scooter.

I hate to be the one to bring this up. .  .but do you really want to possibly void at least some aspect of your 2-year warranty to get a power boost that'll likely be between barely measurable and almost noticeable?

While the horn can be upgraded, it's a really tight fit. Expect to be using some really colorful adjectives if you try to install this yourself.

General Discussion / Re: Making Blackwalls into Whitewalls
« on: November 19, 2010, 05:17:45 AM »
Rianna, thanks for tip but I'll be darned if I can find the right sizes in whitewall. Have you been able to find the oddball 80/80x16?

I'm heading to my dealer tomorrow (Friday) to get the footpeg; I'll see if he has any better luck in tracking down whitewalls.

Thanks for the idea, though. If they make a whitewall, that'd be great. In doing some more reading on the making whitewalls, no one has been able to get good, long-lasting results.

General Discussion / Making Blackwalls into Whitewalls
« on: November 19, 2010, 03:55:11 AM »
I have a People 150 with 16" tires which doesn't have any whitewall tires available for it. So while my wheels are getting powdercoated, I'd like to try painting the sidewalls white.

Before I get in over my head, I was wondering if anyone on this board has tried this? If so, what kind of results did you get, e.g., did they come out looking like real whitewalls or were they more like "graywalls"? :) And did you find the process to be straightforward?

Thanks for your input!

When Word's engine "failed" at 33K, what actually gave up?

I'm a long way from being a mechanic but that seems like a short life for a lightly stressed engine in an age of modern lubrication. I'm disappointed to hear that this considered to be exemplary. Oh well. . .

I'd like to second what others have a said here and add in a few thoughts of my own.

I'd like you to think about how critical storage is to you so you can shop with that in mind.

Also, small wheels vs large wheels (e.g., 10" vs 16") will be less stable but will give you a much wider selection in tires. 10" wheels will give you very quick handling almost to the point of being twitchy. While this is fine for commuting, it's going to make holding a line as you go through the mountains much more difficult, especially as you go over bumps.

Be sure to get at least a 150cc scooter othewise you'll not be allowed on limited access highways.

I'm also going to recommend a larger engine (200cc or above) if you're going to driving in higher speed areas. You can likely reach the speeds you want to with a smaller engine, but you're really going to be taxing the engine.

People 150 / Re: Any Interest In Longer/Wider Passenger Pegs?
« on: November 19, 2010, 02:21:02 AM »
I pick up the peg from the dealership tomorrow (Friday). There's an area not too far from my home with several machine shops within a few miles of each other. I'll see if I get any different results walking in.

If they're not too expensive, i.e. under $20 per peg, I may get two or three sets of different lengths to try out.

No worries. I've only contacted traditional machine shops. With the confidence that comes from ignorance, I believe motorcycle-specific shops can do it without a problem.

But in all seriousness, this really does bode well for the continued economic recovery. Waayyy more important than footpegs!  ;D

In good news for the economy every one of the six machine shops I've contacted is too busy to take the job. So good news for the country, not so good for everyone else.

I'm getting pegs custom machined to be roughly 2x longer or wider, depend on how they're orientated. Check the thread I started on this; I hope to have an answer back by the end of next week.
