Is changing the rear tire something I can do myself?  It's in really bad shape and I need a new one.

People 50 / Issues while driving
« on: March 02, 2012, 05:16:50 PM »
Hi all,

A couple of times over the past month or so while driving the scooter, it seems to lose power or something. It doesn't die or cut out, but just slowly decellerates even though the throttle is being held open. The first time I pulled over, shut it off, restarted and it was fine. A couple of weeks later, the same thing happened but this time I just pulled over and waited a mi ute before trying to go again. I am hoping to hear some thoughts on what I should be checking. I don't know if it is related or not, but I can't start the scooter after it has been sitting more than a day or two without putting gas directly into the carb with an eye dropper.

I love this scooter and am not afraid to work on it. I've completely took apart the carb and cleaned it about a little over a year ago. Do I need to do it again?

Thanks!

This will probably sound dumb, but what do you use to clean the fuel filter with? I also took my fuel filter off, but was unsure how to clean it, so I just put it back in. Based on how tightly the cap was screwed in, I don't think it has ever been taken off and cleaned. However, I am also interested in possibly putting in an in-line fuel filter. I've read on here that they seem to work better at actually filtering the fuel. Until then, I will stick with my stock fuel filter.

People 50 / CDI Box
« on: August 24, 2011, 06:12:27 PM »
Hi all,

I've been lurking in this forum since I bought a used (2004, I think) People 50. It runs great most of the time, so when I do have issues I can almost always find a solution on this site. I have been reading about the derestrictions you can perform on a People 50, and just wanted to make sure my CDI has been derestriced. I posted a picture for you all to see. The shop I bought the scooter from says it has been derestriced, but I can only go around 38 mph going down a really big hill and I only weigh 120 lbs. Also, I lose significant power going up a hill (like down to 20 mph). Flat surfaces tend to top out around 32 mph. I have also discovered that my gps reads about 5 mph slower than my dash, so these numbers are what the gps says, not the dash. I don't own an impact wrench or anything to get the variator nut off to see if the boss drive has been derestricted or not, but the CDI is an easy one to check. Thanks all for your imput!

People 50 / Re: Air Filter and stuff

Well, I think I solved the mystery of the black tubes. The really small one appears to be just a drain for gas overflow...the other one I guess is the preheater hose or whatever that redirects warm air over the carburetor, but we don't have a boot on the carburetor so I guess I will either pull the hose off, or let it continue to dangle. As for my filter, yes it is a foam type filter. Do I wash it in detergent (like dish soap, or laundry soap), or is there something special I should by to wash it in. It looks like it could use a cleaning.

People 50 / Air Filter and stuff

Hi all,

We're new to the scooter world and recently purchased a 2005 Kymco People 50. The previous owner says it has been derestricted, and as you probably all know, it is a 2T. I was poking around the scooter trying to locate the different parts and just to take a good look around things. First, I found two rubber hoses (one appears to have been cut) that are disconnected from whatever. I have no idea what they are supposed to hook onto, or if that was part of the derestricting. Anyway, I opened the air filter housing and noticed some sand in the box and that the air filter was bone dry. Should the air filter be dry, or is it supposed to be damp with oil? The manual I found online said to clean the air filter in solvent or oil detergent (which I have no idea what that is exactly, but it says not to use gasoline), and then to soak it in oil, squeeze out excess oil, then replace. Can someone tell me if I need a new air filter, or should I clean it and re-soak it in oil?

Thank you all! We love the scooter!
