Check the subjects under the Technical/How to section of this forum for oil subjects. I believe this grade of oil has been discussed.

Kymco News / Re: Kymco People GTi 300

Basically an updated p250s. Updated power-plant and re-worked plastics is nice but otherwise your loosing the dual-disc front brakes and less windshield. Don't know if any storage loss!
Hard for me to justify one since I already own a p250s.
Maybe a Downtown 300i or Xciting 500 will be my next upgrade someday.
Until then I'm still having a blast on my p250s!  :)

Technical | How To / Re: Turn lights not working after battery change
« on: March 23, 2011, 10:07:19 PM »
Hi,
I would check for a blown fuse. Fuses may be near the battery but not sure on the 150. If no manual you should be able to search it online or here somewhere.
How did you jump start the scoot? IF you jump started from a running auto that can possibly damage the electrical system, or at least blow a fuse. Jumping f/battery to battery is okay as long as the vehicle supplying the jump is not running. This may not be the case but I'm just throwing it out there! If its a blown fuse the fix will be a simple.
Maybe someone else on hear can better help.
Good luck!

Technical | How To / Re: Diesel oil for a scooter?

Klaviator
I was about ready to try Rotella T6 5w40 but found the Valvoline motorcycle oil and decided to go with it instead. Ive heard many good things about Rotella oil so it should work good. Please give us an update on how it works in your scoot.
So far the difference w/the Valvoline oil is the motor seems quieter than w/auto oil. It could just be the difference in brand of oil or mental on my part! I mean the valve train appears to have less noise. I like that! Less noise to me suggests its doing a better job but that's not scientific, Just my observation.
Ive used auto oil in my bikes in the past w/no ill affects but I'm just am not convinced current auto oil is better than motorcycle oil or HDEOs. We will leave that debate for another time. Never tried the HDEOs but would not be afraid to.
The link for bobistheoilguy.com has more info on oil than you would ever want to know.

Cheers!

Maybe not but I figure if motorcycle oil was formulated for motorcycles and motorcycles & scooters are similar except for the transmissions, then why not use motorcycle oil.
Motorcycle oil may not have the same friction modifiers as automotive oil but it has specifically formulated friction modifiers to protect both the motor and transmissions in motorcycles. It is also designed for small high reving motors that shear oil rather quickly so again it is formualted for this.
I poured through countless forums on this and you get difference of opinions on the subject but I came to the conclusion that if its good enough for a motorcycle then it has to be good enough for a scooter.
Not that I am right, just my conclusion and what I am doing!
I do think a synthetic oil would be better but its much more expensive. Given the short oil change intervals on these small scooters it may not be worth it, but each to their own IMO!

General Discussion / Re: your thoughts on 87 octane gas
« on: February 22, 2011, 02:14:41 AM »
Wow! RON, MON, and AKI! You learn something everyday!
I've used the premium or higher octane gasoline in my motor bikes over the years will no ill effects and will continue to do so.
My experience has been that the bikes seem to start and run better on it! Was told the higher octane gas burns cleaner too but I never researched this myself.
You can use the 87 octane but I will stick to using 92 or 93 octane. Just my preference!

Technical | How To / Re: Kymco xciting 250 noise under acceleration

Yager200i
Thanks for the input!
My bike is running much more smoothly now that I have over 1500 miles, less belt squeal and less fluttering sound under hard acceleration. Although, I do not usually accelerate hard taking off. Maybe its just mental and I am getting use to the sound of the scoot, etc.!
I am no expert but I believe it just needed broke-in to my style of riding? I ride smoothly with smooth take offs, no real quick hard accelerations at take off. Once the scoot gets moving then I will open it up once in a while. IMO I think a drive belt would wear-in under they style of riding and how one operates the throttle. Much like breaking-in a new clutch on a manual transmission! Hard, quick take-offs would be harder on the belt and smoother operation of the throttle would be easier on the belt IMO.
I still notice some belt squeal on take offs if the bike sits for a few days or if its damp or humid outside. Again, this could just be me or ironic! Otherwise I have less fluttering noise & less belt squeal than before. I purchased this scoot as a dealer demo w/approx. 70 miles on it so somebody else wore-in the belt before I got it!
I thought about what you said but I would think if I had a loose belt or weak spring the noises would be all the time and increase, not decrease IMO! I can't speak for Zen but my fluttering noise & squeal appears not to be major.
I will keep tabs on the noises and be mindful of what you said though. Thanks!
So far I am having a blast on my ps250!

I seriously considered a diesel oil such as the 'Rotella' but have not used but read on other forums many who have used diesel oils w/good results.
I found Valvoline 10w40 motorcycle oil at a good price at my local big box auto parts store. I decided to use motorcycle oil in my PS250 since motorcycle & scooters are similar but not the same, of course. Their motors are similar but most scooters have 'dry clutch' and do not share the same oil with the transmission. Scooters, like motorcycles have small high revving motors that work hard and are hard on the oil.
The Valvoline seems to work good. The motor seems quieter. I used regular conventional 10w40 automotive oil through the break-in w/no ill effects. This Valvoline oil should provide better protection IMO.
I noticed just the other day that Valvoline now has this oil in a synthetic as well. I may try that in the future.

People 250 / Re: battery ooopsey

I have my P250s hooked up to a 'float charger' in my unheated workshop. Its been a few weeks now. The weather has been snowy and cold this month, where we live anyways!

This fall the scoot sat for about 2 weeks and the battery was went down enough where it would not turn over quick enough to start. I put it on a 'float charger' over night and the battery came up to charge and the bike fired right up the next day. A battery tender is a must when the temps go down.

The weather improved yesterday w/temps around 35F so I decided to try and start the scoot. It turned over quickly and tried to start but would not so I just gave up rather than run the battery down and put it back on the float charger. I didn't want to fuss over it trying to get it started. Oh well!

I miss riding already!

Thanks Agent Bob!

Anyone using 5w50 motor oil in your scoot? If so, what kind and if you notice any difference?

Conventional! I mean regular non-synthetic motor oil.

Okay! Well, no where in the manual or on the scoot does it say to use mc oil so I would have to assume any oil meeting the API recommended grade(s) would be fine.
The benefits of the 5w50 grade is its broad viscosity range, which s/b be good year-round; and possibly a longer OCI. However, since there is no oil filter just an oil screen, maybe going beyond the recommended OCI is not wise! My riding is all paved roads, mostly country roads & some highway speeds.
Which would be better, to change the oil w/conventional oil every 750-800 miles or use a good synthetic and extend the OCI to 1500-1600 miles or once a year in my case?

Do you think I could extend my oil chg. interval out to 1500-1600 miles and run the 5w50 year round?
