Downtown 300 / Re: New DT300i in the garage What do you now?
« on: December 11, 2011, 12:59:55 AM »
Do as the others have mentioned.  I would recommend spraying all chrome parts with WD-40 to prevent effects of too much humidity.  It is also a good idea to stuff a small cloth in the muffler to keep that dry.  (just don't forget it is there when you go to start it up). A really good wax job now will make it easier to clean up in the spring.

For Sale / Re: WANTED: Seat for Grand Vista

I have an extra standard seat, new condition, came with my 09 GV.  I have a customized touring seat currently on the bike.  $100 and it is yours.  I am in Cleveland Ohio and shipping it will cost another $100 approx.  Where you located?

Doug, the great mpg is off set by the numerous trips you will take just to enjoy the riding experience.  A short trip to pick up a couple groceries can easily turn into a 100 mile ride taking the long way home.  It is an addiction and I don't think there is a twelve step program that will help.  "My name is Bob and Iam a scooteraholic".

There is a hole in the tires?  What is supposed to go in there?  Won't the extra weight make me wobble?
Wow, this scooter stuff is tricky, you learn something new every day.  Just yesterday I learned that the red button on the handlebars makes the scooter a bitch to start - what's with that?  I think it must be some kind of theft prevention device.

I will bet that is just a loose drain plug.  The gasket should not leak unless it was just replaced and crimped.

Just came back from the hardware store.  You want the blue loc tite, the red is more permanent.

I didn't know there was more than one type of loc- tite.  I have a small bottle with a needle type spout that I use on my vehicles.  Hand tighten only. You don't want another half turn or too much compression on the grommets.  The lotite will hold the screws in place but yes, you can remove them.  (You will feel the loctite "give" as you unscrew a screw or bolt.  Hope this helps. PS my spellchecker does not like my loc tite spelling.

I think it is a great question..I have checked my odometer results on mileage against other scooters (riding with others on day and overnight trips) and have had identical mileage with Vespas, Kymco exciting, and two other GV's. Also checked one time against my wife's SUV and it was dead on.  I can't explain it, it is what it is..

Your windshield is attached to the bike with four screws.  When you remove the two screws facing the drivers seat, the front panel above the grill will be freed. Remove this panel and you will see the four attaching screws.  Be sure there is a rubber grommet around each screw.  Before tightening these screws, it is a good idea to remove them one at a time and add a drop of loc-tite  to the threads of each screw.  Replace the screws but be careful when tightening them.  Too tight could put pressure on the windshield.  Now replace the front panel..using loc-tite on the remaining two screws is also a good idea.  There's a lot of vibration on scooters and it is a good idea to check all visible screws on a regular basis.

Congrats and welcome.  What you can expect in traffic is you will NOT be seen!  Wear bright clothing and invest in good protective gear.  It is not a matter of if you go down, simply when will you go down.  I know Texas can get pretty warm but a good mesh armored jacket can actually keep you cooler.  Enjoy your new ride and be safe.

My 09 has 13,000 plus miles on her and I regularly get between 65 and 70 mpg.  Half my riding is 50 mph, the other half city traffic.

General Discussion / Re: 250 for 2 up riding, which one?
« on: April 20, 2011, 12:08:42 AM »
Ihave a Grand Vista and do  many all day rides.  However, I have modified the seat so I am able to sit back an additional 2 inches.  Huge difference in comfort.  My wife rides with me but her tolerance level gives out at about the one hour time frame.  She does bounce around a lot and being higher, the wind impacts her (I am behind my windshield).  The larger tires on some of the models may smooth out the ride a bit.  If I were to do it all over again, I would go directly to the Downtown 300.  Better all around comfort and no problem at speed for longer rides.  Pricey, but that is just the initial investment.  My GV gets approx. 60 MPG city, 65 plus on freeway driving.  I think the 300 would be fairly comparable to that (check the Downtown 300 forum for user MPGs.  Whatever you decide,  sit on them, test ride them if you are able, and when you buy start with you and the wife doing small rides to find your comfort level.  Good luck.

Don't know where you are located but if your budget would let you buy a new 150, try looking for a used 250.  You can pick up a used 250 with low miles for $2500 or less in most parts of the country.  I ride a Grand Vista 250, mostly in the city, but if I need to do highway trips I have enough power to keep up with traffic or pass a truck when needed.  The People 250 has the same engine but has larger size wheels.
These scooters can easily give you service for 50,000 plus miles if maintained.  Good luck with your choice.  Please note that almost EVERYONE that rides wants a little more horsepower than they currently have.  Just a thought.

Hi, I am from Cleveland, Ohio. Have a Grand Vista, '09 with 12,000 miles.  Just had new brakes, rear tire and full service done.  Am waiting on chaps toarrivethat I just ordered andI have a new modular helmet.  It won't be long now.  Have trips planned for Marieta, Ohio down Rt. 555" (Ohio' dragon), trip to West Virginia, and one to Pennsylvania, plus several to Amish country for the horse auctions and food.  A canoe trip  and some camping.  Hope this snow melts soon.

The touring seat will sit you up about one inch higher but the trade-off is it is also one inch closer to the dash.  The best feature is the lumbar support.  I am the one that modified my touring seat by moving  the lumbar support back two inches and lowering the seat one inch.  I am5 foot 9 inches with a 30 inch inseam and I needed to get closer to the ground.  I love this seat now.  I have ridden for 10 plus hours without getting tired.  The mod. Was 200 bucks plus the cost of the seat is approximate 249 so it does get pricey.
