People 50 / 09 one way mystery exhaust hose
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:28:41 AM »
My 09 2 cycle People 50 has the newer type exhaust with the "extra" tube.  I tried to install an early style exhaust off a 04 but had trouble.  Mechanically the 2 are a match but I'm having trouble tracing out the extra "plumbing" that’s connected to the factory pipe.  Leaving it disconnected is causing the engine to stall and run poorly.  There's a rubber hose that feeds somewhere but I'm not sure where it goes or what it's for.  When you trace the routing it goes under the foot panel and then up into the steering column.  I haven't been able to find any return to the carb.  It just seems as if it's fed up into the column and stops.  It becomes a lot of trouble to pull apart and remove and I thought some of you folks may already have a solution.  I thought I'd try an easy way and just plug it but the bike would hardly run.  2nd I just left if open.  The engine ran better but still was stalling and torque/pulling problems.  I put the original back on and she runs good as new.  I wouldn't think there'd be that much difference between the 2 mufflers that would require rejetting just to make it run.  That hose has got to loop back to the engine somehow mechanically or maybe converted to an electrical signal?  I can't find it.  I see other members posting their intent to do the same thing.  Anyone know where it goes, what it is and/or how to bypass?

Thanks,

Jeff

After you remove the plug put it back into the plug wire and use the wire to hold the plug.  Hold the threads up against metal on the engine (against the head were it unscrewed, doing this "grounds" the plug to the engine.  Don't let the plug tip touch metal on the engine.  Now with the key on and brake held have your buddy kick the starter.  Watch for the spark to jump on the plug tip.  If you've got spark and have the plug in your hand during the kick you'll get a bad jolt so be sure and hold the wire/not the plug!  If you see spark good, no spark you've got ignition troubles.   If you do see the plug spark try just a very small shot of starting fluid or a little mixed gas into the plug hole before you replace the plug.  It should at least give you a little sputter.  If it sputters it confirms you have spark and may have a fuel trouble or maybe no compression? You can find very cheap volt meters these days sometime less than $10.00.  It will really help you with trouble shooting the battery problem.  The battery trouble and ignition trouble are 2 different issues.

I've got a buddy seat, drive boss, main jet and an exhaust from an older "04" people on the way.  I'll pep up this monster 50cc 2 stroke and find a nice trunk for a little more storage ( &weight).  After that all I'm worried about is keeping an eye out for ol Smokey and his radar gun.  Over 35mph and no plates and they'll haul me  down to the court house and get some more of my money  :)

It's a quality and machine has the power to boast, "Eat my dust"

Looks like a seller on eBay has a NIB factory cylinder for $30.00.  Not sure if it's spec'd as a 2 cycle.  Another has pistons & rings, they're spec'd as 4 cycle but 2 cycle may be available. Other sellers have the head assembly.  Using your OEM #'s you can find the correct parts but do your homework and look for deals.   If the crank and rod are good have your friend machine the piston pin & rod to a true round fit and finish it off with a valve job. Even if your friend has access to some CNC machinery considering shop time and trouble verses the cost of new parts I think you'd come out better to buy new parts.  Maybe find a wreck that has a good engine and & replace yours. Cost for new stuff to rebuild looks like give or take $150.00 (and your time).  Determining what made the piston crack is a difficult but important question (especially if you’ve done modifications).  Get an expert to help you analyze or set it back to factory specs.  Maybe it was running too lean and got hot? Oil pump maybe?

Just before Christmas I bought a 09 People 50 2 stroke 2nd hand from the original owner ~2500 miles on it.  She runs like a clock.  I weight 260 add another 10 lbs. for clothes.  It pulls me with no problem and has power to spare.  It'll run 35 and get there pretty quick.  I plan on adding a storage crate so I can carry different stuff (groceries, lunch box, trips to the auto store, beach bag, lap top, etc.)  Also I  just bought the accessory buddy seat off eBay for $30.00 8).  I don’t plan on riding it with my wife as the 2nd passenger but I think the bike will pull me and a small child with no problem.  I do plan on getting a little more top end by changing the drive boss.  Hope to reach 40mph and I'll be happy  ;D, It runs so good I hate to change anything else.  The reason I bought a 50cc was because I liked the idea of not having to register it with DMV, state tags etc. but like the original poster I had concerns about it pulling a big boy.  Let me tell ya, it’s pulling about 300lbs and sounds strong.  I've only driven it a few hours as our VA weather has been quite cold.  If (and I seriously don't think it will) she blows up this spring from the extra tonnage I'm out no money and can probably part it out for what I paid.  Besides I started my life style eating change again after New Year and hope to be couple of lb's lighter by spring.  If you buy one I think you'll be satisfied
