General Discussion / Re: I finally got my Kymco AK 550

What color are you painting it? I have just short of 2000 miles on my 2021 AK550. I have added a GIVI screen and an aftermarket rear shock. I love this scooter.

SDD you and your wife will be fine on the AK550. My wife and I together weigh over 450 pounds.
I normally ride between 55-65 on our secondary roads and then 75-80 on an interstate hwy.
I ride very little on an interstate. I run super unleaded and have been averaging 60-64 mpg.
I only have 1500 miles on the scooter so far.

General Discussion / Pros and cons of your AK550
« on: June 27, 2021, 08:17:09 PM »
I purchased a 2021 AK550 at the end of March from Moxie Scooters in Colleyville, TX.
I changed the oil and filter myself after about 500 miles. I have put a GIVI screen on, which does a lot better
Job of keeping wind off the rider than the stock screen.  This scooter is a joy to ride with only minimal
complaints.  In my opinion the brakes could be a little stronger.  Will go with different brake pads when it’s ime
to change pads. Acceleration is smooth and effortless, at least up to 85 which has been my top speed on it so far.
The grips have not gotten buzzy at any speed.  I do know that putting 2 people on this scooter that are the size of my
wife and I is a mistake. Together we greatly exceeded the scooters weight limit.  Surprisingly the scooter handled
ok but acceleration was poor.  I like the seat, but I am having an aftermarket rear shock installed. The ride is a little
rougher than I care for.  I think the new shock will help. I have about 1500 miles at this time.

The shock I purchased was specified as for the AK550.  After several communiques with GEARS RACING, which is in Taiwan, they have sent me instructions as to ow to install this shock.  I will find out Friday, a I have an appoint at my Kymco dealer to get a few things looked at including installing the shock.😊

Found that I will have to use a shorter bolt that will fit between the canister and the eyelet on the shock body.
The canister cannot be adjusted.  😩

Technical | How To / Shocking Question
« on: June 23, 2021, 04:38:46 PM »
Just purchased a Gears Racing Shock H2 for my 2021 Kymco AK550. It came with an external gas reservoir attached. My question/problem is that this external reservoir is in line with the eye bolt and I can’t get the bolt in the space between the eyebolt and the external reservoir. If the reservoir could be adjusted up or down I could get the eye bolt.  DOES ANYONE know if this external canister can be turned so I can get my
Eye bolt in?

Thanks

I live in Texas. I picked up my new 2021 AK550 at the first part of April. I am/was of the understanding that in 2021 the AK550 is euro 5 compliant, ride by wire, and actually lost almost 2 HP, but did not loose any torque. I am going to contact my dealer the first part of this week and I will converse with him about the ride by wire amongst other things. Would Kymco or any manufacturer make 2 separate modified engines for the same year model?  I don’t know, and I intend to try to find out. If the US 2021model is not ride by wire, then I am going to feel like I actually have what amounts to a 2020 model, made in 2021. I will report back what the dealer tells me.  I know that mine was the first 2021 AK550 he got in.

I have the 2021 Kymco AK550. it is ride-by-wire. I have had it for a couple of months. I am quite impressed with this scooter. I have owned many many motorcycles including 2 Bergman 650 and 2 Bergman 400. Gives me a smile every time I ride the AK550.😀

General Discussion / Re: Rear shock - Kymco AK550
« on: May 21, 2021, 09:58:51 PM »
currently, my wife and I exceed the weight capacity of the scooter.  I will check the shock that is on the scooter to see if it is adjustable.  I was just curious if anyone with an AK550 had went with an aftermarket shock, but apparently not. I appreciate the replies and will report how an aftermarket shock performs versus the stock one.😃

I am wanting a smoother ride especially with a passenger aboard.  Do anyone know of a good aftermarket shock
That will give me a smoother ride.

Thanks

WEL, did you ever find out what was causing your problem?  Interested to know. I haven’t had this problem, at least so far. :)

General Discussion / First oil change
« on: April 28, 2021, 12:23:17 AM »
Instead of driving my new AK550 to the Dealer for its first oil change I did it myself. I had 290 miles on it.  The oil filter that was on it was HiFLO Filtro HF164.  Ordered that from my nearest Wal-mart.  Called my dealer to ask them what oil they used. Didn’t want to use a different oil than they use, as I know they will be doing at least some of my oil changes, among servicing. They use Amsoil 10w-40. Had to order that on-line. Going slow, taking my time and being careful not to break any tabs etc....  Got it accomplished.  Did find some metal shavings on one of the filter screens of a drain. Didn’t think it was excessive.  All seems ok.  Next time I do this, hopefully I will be much quicker.😃😃
