zx50 / super fever cdi problem

last week i purchased a 2000 zx50 super fever. ran very well for first four days. i decided i would put a "performance" ignition coil i had in the garage in. it ran even better! until later that night it died and wouldnt run 
so i ordered a new CDI and when it got to my house today i noticed it was the wrong one. so i was wondering. do the pins on the wires need to be there? or could i get ride of the harness and plug them directly into each other? or would that not be good?
