Wait a minute.
If there is a grove on both sides then there will be a grove on both sides regardless if you point the metal end or plastic end toward you. Looks like the key can be inserted with the English version of the Kymco name pointing left or right and it will be the same either way... just like my last 4 bikes (2 Hondas and 2 Burgmans).

Take that key to the locksmith and they will know what key to get for you.

Then get on installing the emergency seat latch release. Read this to get a good idea of what is needed for this. Obviously your scooter will be different but the idea is the same.

I know the bottom line here is a locksmith but when I said the groove was on both sides I meant front and back not left and right so the groove does change sides depending if you look from head to tail or tail to head.   Thank you.  I will put a latch but my main concern is having a backup key incase I simply misplace it.

Just look closely at the longitudinal groove (s) on your key.
You then  look closely at the key blanks offered for sale on eBay.
MATCH  the grooves. The sellers know those grooves are different for certain keys....they usually sell more than one type blank.
left, right...no matter. MATCH the grooves on your key to the uncut blank.

Stig

So my keys have grooves on both sides  but the groove is always on right when I point the metal part at me and on the left when I point the plastic part to me.    Which way do I read this.   I feel dumb

I have always found spares for my 4 scooters on ebay (Honda, Kymco, Suzuki, Piaggio)
Yeah, from China...and every one of the keys worked.
Pay attention to the photos .....get the correct blank for your hardware store to cut.

Thanks Air Strong and Stig / Major Tom
My key can be used for the ignition or to pop the trunk.   I do not understand how to figure out if its a left or right

I want to share and interesting story.  I went on my first vacation in 2 years to Portugal.   There were tons of motor bikes there but I only saw one Kymco.   (attached).    Sardines are a big thing in Portugal so I bought many cans to bring home to friends.   After my vacation I loaded the seat trunk of my Peoples 50 4T with Sardines and planned on making a deliveries.   I must have been jet lagged because the for the first time in a decade I locked the keys in the trunk.
I tried several things on the internet but could not break in.   Finally I found one blog about a guy who attached magnets to a coat hanger and got his keys out.   First I pryed open the seat about 3/4" and kept it open with a plastic spatula. Next,  I attached a magnet to an electrical fishing line (yellow) and went fishing.
After a few minutes of out and in and out I heard a "click" and noticed the line felt a little heavier.   Once I got the keys to the crack I took a coat hanger with a small hook and put it through the key ring.   Next I pulled and twisted and I could not believe it.....I got my keys back.   I immediately went to Home Depot (after delivering the Sardines) and had a spare key made but.....It did not work.   So those those of you who did not fall asleep with my long story,  Please help me find a blank for Peoples 50 cc 4T.   I know nothing about left hand keys which I keep on finding.   Here is a picture of my key.    Thank you
Bill

I wish to modify my remark that I never de-restricted the scooter.   But hear me out!
Back in 2012 while riding the bike, I heard loud noises coming from the engine/camshaft area.   My dealer said the splines of the camshaft were stripped.
The bike only had 800 miles and I posted the whole ordeal in the Peoples 50 forum.
To make a long story short my camshaft was replaced.   No one understood how the shaft was stripped and it was theorized that the 1 week owner before me had possibly tried to de-restrict the variator but then decided to return the bike to dealer for another one. It was further thought he did not torque the nut properly.  Theoritically I bought a de-restricted bike (dealer stated he had no knowledge of this).  Bottom line the whole camshaft was replaced.  I am wondering if the restriction washer was left off by the service department.   I did some reading and my understanding is that de-restricting doesn't even do a lot on a 4T.
Well anyway maybe thats why I can easily go to 38-42mph on this bike.
Thoughts?

Palm Beach Flordia.
Yes it is unusually fast.  It is not de-restricted or anything.  (at least I do not think it is.  I bought it second hand from a dealer whose first owner drove it one week before upgrading to another bike)  Not sure why it goes this fast.  I thought they can easily go to 38 even with restrictions.

PS:   How can I find out if it was de-restricted?

Perfect example why I check the difficulty of valves, oils and wheel removal servicing when factoring my choice of purchase.
If I were wealthy...I'd let my dealer worry about the maintenance schedule....and buy whatever.

It was mentioned above that you posted on "how to remove body parts". (Wait! That doesn't sound right!)  Please help me find that post?   I wonder what percentage of scooter drivers who have both technical abilities and economic resources choose to do their own maintainence vs outsourcing the job to their dealer.   Now that I did this once and avoided the hazzle of driving the scooter to the dealer and leaving it there until it was "cold" and then getting my wife to drive me to pick it up .....I think self maintainence is the way to go for me.   However I know "S" about  brakes or wheels.

Addenum:  I did find a post by Iahawk on removing shocks and rear wheels.  Wonderful documentation!

Nice job!!
The reason I posted on this is because I could not find any thing on the web whether or not the "Universal Mounting Kit" would attach seemlessly to the type of rack carriers you and I have.  It's good to see others are successful.
I thought I was going to have an issue with my center screw becuase under normal circumstances (for cosmetic reasons) it sits above the surface of the bikes rear body.  However when I removed this screw I found it had essentially a removable cosmetic metal collor that kept it above the surface.   I simply removed the collar which allowed the center screw to be recessed like the two side screws.   The Universal Mounting kit already had a prefabbed hole in this area so no drilling was necessary.   Yeah it was a thrill to spruce things up!   I am looking for other stuff to do but I am not interested in de-restricting.   This old bike hits 42 MPH which exceeds the speed limits of every road in my little Island town.    Maybe a tall windshield because I wear glasses and those helmets with visors are not comfortable with glasses (at least mine isn't) Maybe someone or I should start a thread on helmets for 4 eyed people.

Don't know why I am getting around to dressing up a 2009 Kymco People S 50  4T
Did not know if a universal Givi mounting kit would fit over the plastic rear carrier.
Took a chance on the Givi E370.
It mounted neatly and securely.   The same back carrier can be found on the Peoples S 150 and S 200 models for other late bloomers.

Whatever the spec range is, I will use the widest end of the setting as the clearance will close down as the components wear. That way I don't have to worry about how long I go between adjustments & burning valves. I do it after it hits the recommended mileage & it's convenient.

Yes, that makes sense.  I wish that I had done .05 mm as opposed to the .04 mm.

Sorry to revive this issue once again but I acturally read over 8 manuals  for 49 or "50 CC"" air cooled engines and watched over 10 videos.   I figured that  would be easier than ripping off my panels again.    The majority of the manuals/videos set the valve clearances at .05 mm but the range was .03-.05 mm.    Several, blogs and a few videos but no manuals discussed .1 mg or .004 inches. (for 49/50 cc)    I think what is being missed is that the 50 cc engines can be distiguished from the larger engines (which are typically .1-1.2 mm).   The Agility 50 cc discusses .04 mm in their manual.   I am only bringing this up since there will be those that self maintain old bikes and they should be aware that not everyone agrees with .004" or .1 mm and there are many (including manufacturers) that support much smaller clearances that I am mentioning above.  I imagine it is easy confuse .04 mm with .004 inches if it happened 10 years ago.   If I am somehow being a dumb idiot and if I burn out my exhaust valve, I will publically announce how I didn't listen and pay the price for the humiliation and of course the repair.  But if my research is correct and  I ride off into the sunset and you will not hear a tap, ping, ding, peep from me again.  Is that "Clearance!!!!"

As a newbie I am sort of afraid to joke around.    But, vote again!

So many different opinions on 50 cc valve clearances.    What do you use?

People 50 / how to get the panels off people S 50 and 125
« on: June 19, 2022, 12:44:20 PM »
Thought I would post a video that I watched that helped me get the panels off my 2009 peoples S 50 4T

Its in Italian  (I think) but it is short and accurate.
Without it my valve job would have been harder.
