Downtown 300 / Stuck solenoid
« on: November 02, 2016, 04:02:15 AM »
Title says it all,  the solenoid stuck. I started the bike and it was running with a slight engine whine but nothing that loud, a couple of miles I noticed the battery light was on and went to shut down but the engine kept turning over. I re-engaged the ignition and about 1/2 mile later the engine stopped with the battery dead as a door nail. then the 2.3 mile trek walking back to the house. Sucks my local shop is on vacation Nov. 1-11.

Is there aa link to the specific bulbs you used? also did you replace both high and low beams?

It should be the same. Is one with DR pulley sliders and one not? I ask as 1 second sounds about right for the difference.

You have to pull the front Tupperware. Not a fun job.

You have to think of the sliders slightly differently than rollers. There are two things affecting it;

1.) first is the weight. this creates the force closing the front variator and decreasing the ratio for the drive. The heavier the weights the faster the rollers etc. will decrease the ratio with increased RPM.

2.) second is the rollers diameter. With a larger diameter of the roller the more it will want to close the variator making it reach a lower gear ratio faster. With sliders this is a bit different. The fact is with the design the profile changes making it where at idle it looks like a small diameter roller but as the rpms increase and the slider moves out it increases the profile making it look like a larger diameter roller. This cam effect is what give them their advantage. Essentially a larger gear ration range.

That would if that wire was a shared ground.

The 350 has no more total HP but there is quite a bit more torque at lower RPM to develop the same power.

Actually the one I linked too states water proof so that cup may not be necessary other than to keep water buildup from the lens assembly.

My concern primarily would be the electrical. Originally the bulbs are only 35w each, some of those kits are in the 80w or more range and insanely bright. I saw one kit, link below, that is a 40w bulb that might be ok with stock wiring. Of course there is always the DOT light approval issues, tickets just waiting to happen.

could be a high spot on the rotor or just grabby brakes.

Symptoms sound like the rollers/sliders are engaging high gear way too early/easily. This could be the spring in the rear closing the rear portion of the variator is malfunctioning.

Mine lives inside but had sat for so long it froze. Eventually pulling the cable freed the seat then adjusting the cables got it to where I can unlatch it by the key alone.
