Not a fan of darksiding for number of reasons, but hey, free country, right? There was a topic somewhere in a darkside group or involving darkside group, one of the members crashed on Cherohala and was either dead or in bad shape, the rest had to go back and couple more crashed on the way down with pretty dire consequence, I know in the end it was at least one fatality and couple helicopter flights, and of course it was all about the tire choice, one side foaming at the mouths, claiming that it was the cause of the accident, other throwing all the "million rides did million miles"... I stay out, my opinion is "let them" but I'm 100% certain that long curvy road like Cherohala or Blue Ridge at moderate pace and on a heavy bike with car tire can cause issues... Not to mention the negative feedback of a square tire, I personally don't like the feeling, also don't care what anyone else does, so I could have been the darksiding and not giving a F
Anyway, S9 is on a back burner, bought CRF230L and that's our new scooter LOL, also winter is coming so I got 2 snowmobiles to prep. Now that would be a fun ride on 2 wheels, 150hp 2 stroke with a gnarly CVT!

Another reason for crickets is NO ONE KNOWS! No one has been there and done that. I was not the first one to put a car tire on the back ofva scooter but nearly the first on this forum. Got my info from the "daarkside" and Burgman forums. Dint see anything about it here so went elsewhere.

I think Scootdawg forum and china scooters forum has tons of 50 cc upgrade posts...

Darksiding is such a volatile topic, I thought all you had to do is say it 3 times and the whole forum would be on you like a ton of bricks. What are you running it on? Do they even make car tires small enough?

haha...I always purposely avoid the 50cc forum section precisely because of threads like this....and then this morning I decide to take another look in the 50cc area....lesson learned!

Find it funny that scooter forum can be so snobbish, do you think 50cc scooters are for plebs?

Aren't there 50cc forums where they inform, misinform, attack and applaud each other - at length?
Perhaps the OP would be better served there?
Stig

This is Kymco specific forum, was looking for specific model info, my mistake was assuming that someone here has a clue.

General Discussion / Re: Deristriction
« on: October 13, 2022, 06:03:27 PM »
Hey!

It may or may not be restricted by CDI, de-restricting usually requires cutting a wire, unplugging a wire or cutting a back side of CDI off with hacksaw...
Where are you located? I'm guessing you have a DC ignition and I have Naraku derestricted CDI for Yup/Dink/People, bought it for my Super9 but it has AC ignition so it didn't work.

I've seen a washer welded into exhaust near the motor acting as restrictor, but I can't remember what scooter it was.

Also as mentioned above Variator may be restricted, some have a ring that is removed, mine had a whole sleeve that I ended up replacing because it has a shoulder on it that keeps it from moving all the way in.

Also ALL CAPS no bueno

Well, I recall several discussions on here about this very subject of AC and DC CDI for vaious models. Sometimes searching for any information on this forum can be a challenge.

Searched ad nauseam, nothing came up about late model S9 being any different, was under assumption that since they share many parts with other 2T like Dink, Yup, People and earlier S9 including LC the ignition would be same, weather it is AC or DC. Ordered specific S9 CDI and tried half dozen brand new CDI's from shop, all marked People/S9, even stamped number on the outer case is the same...

Also hacksawed nearly half way though my original CDI and never hit that magic wire, decided to quit since I couldn't find a replacement of any kind, figured 35mph was better than dead scoot

In case anyone reads these forums, here's an update: seems most of the earlier Kymco models have DC powered CDI (that's Direct Current , 12V from battery) including Super 9 and People 50 but my 2009 SP is a unicorn with AC power to CDI (Alternating Current, 30-60V direct from stator)

I would have guessed that something like that is a common knowledge in a Kymco community...

As per title, pretty sure my 2009 S9 AC has different wiring pinout from any other Kymco.
I've tried no less than 8 CDI's and none work, including the brand new Naraku, so I'm thinking it's a one year only wiring pinout. Pic attached, if I can figure out how

Small 2 wire plug: Black+White  "kill" (grounds when ignition off) Black+Red A/C power, upward of 30v~ when kicking

Big 4 wire plug: Green Ground,  Black+Yellow Coil, Blue Yellow signal (0.5v AC when kicking over) and last one is blank.

*Some diagrams show ground in the empty spot on my bike, can it be that simple that every CDI I have (except the original) required 2nd ground?

What it boils down to is how cost effective is it to heavily mod a 50 cc engine to get better performance? Honda in the 60's bult a 50 cc dohc Gran Prix entry that produced astounding power and won the class. Sochiro Honda dumped truckloads of ¥ on that project. Many, including me, think hot-rodding is great. Wonderful innovations result but it takes money.

Boils to this: you want to ride or you want to tinker? You want to ride, stick in a bigger engine. Make a "sleeper" with a 125 cc GY6. Or just trade for a bike with a bigger jug. Or if tinkering is it, go for it. But you gonna walk more.

Honda RC11X bikes got nothing to do with my objective (yes I know my GP motorcycles and Hondas racing history) I don't see how 50cc DOHC twin screaming at 20+rpm  mated to a 9 speed gearbox has anything to do with a single cylinder 2 stroke mated to a rubber band.
I'm just trying to uncork my stock S9 so I can keep up with traffic.
Did I mention it's a 2 stroke? they are restricted to literally half the speed they are capable of.

If I have a desire for speed I will ride on of my many motorcycles or vintage scooters that are all faster than S9 can ever be.

I asked a specific question, Technigas vs Malossi pipe, clearly no one knows the answer.

I asked about reputable US suppliers... crickets...

But hey "use search function!"

I'm not a noob, been around scooters for 20 years, motorcycles 30+, just never had any interest in twist-n-go type until now. 15 years ago we had a shop next door and access to multiple parts sources, shop is closed, all the suppliers are gone... currently I am finding things on ebay (questionably cheap) Amazon (ridiculously overpriced) or overseas from sources I never heard of. I get my vintage parts from SIP but for some reason they do not sell Malossi parts to US customers.

Also I'm looking for main jet and I'm getting too many conflicting results M4, M5, M6... Brought the bike to our place up north and I don't have a garage or many tools up there so I want to get the right parts the first time and not have to take it apart 100 times trying to match a jet because I can't leave it disassembled out in the yard.

You have any idea how many threads on this very topic exist on this forum? These questions have been asked and answered. Do a search and THEN comment, please.

As I mentioned before I have searched, links are dead and info is outdated, 10 year old posts pointing to long gone suppliers.

Seems it takes a little nudge to get  reply and still NOTHING on topic.

I'm thinking either no one here has a clue or everyone just such a snob that they can't take a moment to type up few lines.

Looking for simple and reliable setup for my bone stock S9, don't want a hand grenade or loud noisemaker and no power.
.
Leaving the cylinder stock, for now.
Want to get a Pipe and Variator, Malossi makes both, any reason not to get Malossi pipe and go with Technigas, which seems to be most popular, or at least more results come back on Google.
If Technigas, what model pipe, they have more than one.
Also where should I order it. (I'm in US)
If I get all Malossi parts will the variator work better with Malossi pipe?
I understand that ideal weights will keep it in the powerband, so would Malossi kit have ideal set up to go with malossi pipe?
Also where can I get jets?
Seems all links are dead, posts I'm finding are 10 years old, google search points to questionable sources and eBay which is loaded with fake junk.

it sounds like someone has a 2 stroke addiction...I love it!

You can say that, got a fleet of smokers, I think my second bike ever was  Water buffalo (Suzuki GT750)

Also I have acquired another S9! This one is LC, has bunch of performance parts, not quite sure what's on the inside but it has a pipe, water temp gauge, some foam air filter that had completely fallen apart and seems we lost the keys in the move. I'm guessing 70cc and some aftermarket carb, but I didn't have time to look closely. Previous owner may still have a spare and I'm hoping he can find them, not sure what exactly I have to do if he can't, but not looking forward to drilling and replacing ignition cylinder.

Tried the "speed control" CDI but it's dead, wire plugged in or not, no spark, quite disappointing. I'm in Maine amd spare CDI's at the shop in RI, will bring ALL of them up next week

Don't open that can o' worms again on here!  😂😂

I bought 3 CVT vehicles this year (Subaru, Sled and this S9) but have no practical knowledge on how the variator works, only a theory. I'm guessing there is a solid data on what happens when you change parameters, this got to be less complicated than 2 stroke tuning since there are only 3(?) variables: roller weights, spring contracting the weights and little springs in the back part, whatever it's called, looks like brake shoes. Those I understand set the engagement point, but the weight and spring on the front pulley I don't quite understand.
