Downtown 300 / Re: Downtown GT 2024 air filter box intake design problem
« on: September 16, 2024, 09:08:39 PM »
Hello everyone!  I'm a new owner of a Kymco Downtown 350 GT and just did the 1000km service today.  I want to share with you a problem with the new Downtown model.  It is the design of the air filter box that has the intake port positioned at the rear, towards the water flow discharged by the rear wheel.  In fact, yesterday I drove in a torrential rain on the highway for about 100km, took a break at a gas station, changed some clothes and started on my way.
After I left in torrential rain, on sudden acceleration and in an overtaking, the engine lost power.  The problem disappeared after the rain stopped, in the next 50km.  Today, during the inspection, it was found that the air filter box was half full of water.  The Kymco Bucharest service promised to forward the problem to the factory.   It would probably be solved by a recall and replacement of the air filter box cover, with another one that has the intake hole repositioned.

Wow, why fix something that wasn't broken. It's not the good place for engine air intake for many reasons. It's quite low and on the rear where there is a lot of dirt, water, dust etc. Rear wheel area always takes a lot time to clean at pressure wash as it is dirtiest part of scooter. Lack of real wheel mudguard on 2024 model doesn't help either.  Air filter will have a lot to do for sure. Even on original Kymco DT 300 air intake placement isn't the best in business but it is a way better than 2024 model.

You are lucky that you didn't hydro lock your engine !

Recently there were some software updates to M3 tool. I upgraded my M3 tool from v1.47 to V24.03.05 and on my 2011 Kymco Downtown 300i: 1. I can't no longer communicate with ABS 8M module - communication error. 2. TPS Reset function is gone - it wasn't working in my case anyway. Good thing that I can downgrade back to 1.47.

Downtown 300 / Odometer fraud - it's possible - buyers beware
« on: April 07, 2024, 09:49:27 PM »
Hi !

Today I spent some time trying to figure out if you can change odometer readout in Kymco Downtown. I found a forum where many Kymco scooters were given odometer rollback. Getting odometer value change it is not so easy as you need direct access to chip having odometer miles/kms stored but once you get there is easy sailing. Have a look, somebody rolled odometer from 101 853 km to 27 000 km

Also 2014 People 300GT, from 68 036 km down to 23 000 km

Downtown 300 / Re: Touring capabilities
« on: March 25, 2024, 09:48:21 AM »
So im just getting my a2 license and this'll likely be my first motorbike, i was wondering how well it handles occasional long trips and sustained highway speeds (1200km over two days). Can it do 600km a day? Whats the highest cruising speed it can keep without harm? I know a 300 is a liiiitle underpowered for such a trip but its only a once or twice per year thing.

For the record, im not completely green, im 23 with many years of cycling experience and worked 2+ years as a cyclist courier

There is no need to worry about scooter handling the trip. I'd worry about rider being able to handle the trip. Every scooter can ride day and night if there is oil in sump and gas in the tank. I have done a lot of long range scooter touring  starting from 50cc doing 400km per day and it's was always me that was limiting factor, not the machine.

Hi !

Recently I got a problem with rear wheel spinning while on center stand on idle RPMs. I traced the problem to chinese 20x12 13g sliders that where flipping inside the LGE5 Variator Movable Drive Face with LGE5 ramp plate ( post 2011 DT300i  CVT config )- one flipped slider was enough to lock CVT in "second" or "third" gear and made any acceleration from standstill a challange  :P

That's a pitty because when they worked, the scooter had a perfect gearing for my taste which I can't replicate using rollers.  :'(

I'm thinking about purchase of Dr Puller 20x12 13g set but I'm wondering if they have any better anti-flipping capabilities ?  ::) Real life reports would be much appreciated from you guys  ;D

thanks

For the clutch, you have to squeeze the pulley very hard with two hands. It can be done.

If you can't squeeze the clutch with hands try to rotate it 45 degrees. Once I was trying to squeeze it so hard that my fingers hurt for next two days but I just could do it. Then I rotetet clutch 45 degrees and it was much easier to squeeze.

I would gladly to this job for you for 3000 USD with shipping myself from Europe and back + parts + labor included  ;D

Seriously - get the parts and do it yourself - it's a one hour job replacing all drive train with new parts. I'd get new clutch assembly as dissassembling the cluch without special tool is tricky and takes time so don't bother and buy whole clutch assembly and that will give you almost plug and play experience.

Today I had put chinese 20x12 13g sliders from Aliexpress. Weight is quite close to specs. They will set you back 16 USD.

I had 13.5g 20x12 rollers for last 2000 kms but as milage passes they seem to starting to get "lazy" - I mean that after putting them new I could rev engine WOT to about 7000 rpm but after 2000 km peak RPM's go down to about 5800 rpm. There is some wear but it's even and tehre are no flat spots.

I will report back after 1500 km how these chinese sliders perform.

I had similar issue when I put chinese 15g 20x12 sliders. Clutch was engaging on idle rpm's. When I swapped sliders for 15 g 20x12 rollers problem was gone   :o

Hi !

I wanted to report that swapping ECU is the way to go if you are having issues with mid throttle hesitation or "micro-pulls" with post 2011 ECU's. That was the main reason why I deceided to swap ECUs. I tried to rotate MAF sensor before but that didn't help. I made now 3000 km with "new old" ECU and I'm so sure that I will never go back to 2011 restricted ECU so I sold it 8)

Engine is pulling forward constantly no matter how wide I open the throttle. I can't feel any additional HP or torque. ( 2009 33 hp vs 2011 29 hp ).  My fuel MPG went down from 75 to 71.

Looks good to me !

Do you have any useful information on using this device?  The website looks really flaky, talking about "Smoke detectors", "Definition of a motorcycle", etc.  Almost nothing on actual motorcycle diagnostics.  The suggestion to "Look for version for Kymco" doesn't yield any results.

For a time being not much as I used it only once and connected it to only one scooter with no active fault codes. You can see video in my first post what data you can read from DT300i ECU with engine running. I'm keeping this device as backup for engine and ABS troubleshooting time if it ever comes.

Txs alot, interesting!
Would you check it please and give a short feedback what can be done with this diagtool?

Yesterday I cleared old, non-active, fault codes from ABS module. Checked ECU for current and stored errors - none reported. Watched live engine data by graph and numbers. You can also perform TPS reset using this tool.

So, where does one find one of these? I venture a guess if it works on DT300i ECU EFI it will work on all Kymcos with EFI and that little three wire plug.
Does this have cable adapters to fit nearly anything?

You can find this tool on several places:

https://fxtul.com/
ebay
Aliexpress

Depending on version you order ( there are three versions ) you get all the cable adapters

Is it this?

Not quite - it is version for Honda Kawasaki Yamaha. Look for version for Kymco, SYM, Yamaha.

I just received FXTUL M3 motorcycle diagnostic tool. I got version that is design to be used Kymco,  Sym and Yamaha motorcycles. I have 2011 DT300i with ABS. I can confirm that it connects to ECU and ABS modules.  You are able do usual diagnostic stuff like viewing past faults, clearing faults and viewing live data.

Before that I tried using OBD2 Bluetoth dongles with prices ranging from 10 USD to 50 USD but none of them was able to connect to ECU. This tool costs 60 USD with free shipping which I think is very good value for money as you are getting cables for all 3 scooter brands. Orginal Kymco diagnostic tool is in range of 300-400 USD.

You can watch tool in action here : https://youtube.com/shorts/yUG2fBH92K4

I put new set of 13.5g 20x12 mm rollers. Now I have 7000 rpm screamer @ WOT  8) I have to put about 500 km to see if they stay or go.

I also cleaned all variator parts with compressed air and rag soaked in isopropyl alcohol.

I was using 14.5g for last 1000 km but could not get past 5500 rpm with wide open throttle from stand still start which made scoot a little big slugish. Gas mileage was great though -  3.1 L/100 km - and 5200 RPM @ 90 km/h, 5500 rpm @ 100 km/h.
